in Super Mario Wii?
Something about this ability doesnt seem right to me. maybe im used to the marios of old having a unusal/inventive powerup.. he looks like jughead from archie for gods sake, it just doesnt seem to work to me. i also never felt the power ups from mario 64 were right.
also, i hate how mario has that rendered look (in game and in the games artwork) nintendo started using starting with mario 64. i want him to look like he did in marios 2-4. i think zelda isnt the only game that should have a styleized look. dont get me wrong i love the games, but it seems like the new ones are lacking soul. i wish the new games looked like mario world on steroids. im not sure why they seem intent on making the new games look like mario 1 with the dark brown goompas and dark brown blocks and flagpole, mario 1 was hideous compared to its sequels..
anyone else feel the same way?

I actually agree with this. I think what bothered me more with that power up was the ridiculous move that we HAVE to shake the wiimote up and down to float. Even though I mostly liked New SMB Wii, I still can't get fully used to Mario's "heaviness" when he runs now...like it takes an extra second for him to gain speed...

I just hate his high pitched voice. Somehow I don't think Mario should sound so high pitched and screechy.

I didn't find any of the upgrades in NSMBWii to be all that memorable. If somebody asked, I probably couldn't mention which power-ups were even in the game. The exception is the penguin suit, so I guess that is probably the best.
i also never felt the power ups from mario 64 were right.
Blasphemy! Metal Mario is one of the best Mario power-ups of all time, especially the music that comes with it. Thought the cap concept was fitting for the transition to 3D and all three were well integrated.

Ditto, especially since I feel like his voice has gotten progressively higher. However, Mario's not nearly as irritating as Toad's current voice.

It's not a memorable power-up, but it is my favorite one in the game. The penguin suit feels a bit forced to me, also redundant with the ice power.
My primary issue with NSMBWii is how slip-slidey Mario is on every level. Love the game overall, though.
I love marios voice. I always catch myself quoting what he says. Everytime I boot up galaxy I say super mario GAAAALAXYYYYY in marios voice, and ever since I do it for all the older mario game at the title scree.
I loled at the end of galaxy 1 when he says thanks for playing my game.

for me mario games were always whimsical like. the power ups were from left field but fit in well. mario in a track suit with a beanie on his head is not. and mario should be rendered in a styleized style, i dont wanna see him rendered lifelike, i for one dont wanna play a portly italian running around, or ron jeremy saving the princess.

I've always enjoyed and appreciated Mario's voice in Super Mario 64, but it would've been awesome if Captain Lou Albano did Mario's voice instead. "Hey pisanos, it's Super Mario 64!"

Yeah, the propeller sucks. I like the bee form in Super Mario Galaxy, but I haven't played the game.
Honestly, I still don't jive with a lot of Super Mario World. I don't care for the cape or riding Yoshi.

Seems the thread ought to be titled "Has Mario strayed too far from his (NES) roots?"
I have mixed feelings about it.
Nintendo handled the transition of the Mario series from 2D to 3D about as well as they possibly could have.
On the other hand, if you were to ask me back in the mid-to-late 1980's to imagine what Mario's voice might sound like if he ever talked, it wouldn't have been anything along the lines of what we have seen in the more recent games (circa N64 and later).
Don't see a problem with the power-ups. The Mario power-ups have always been hit or miss dating back to the NES days. The Raccoon, Hammer Bros. and Fire Mario were all very useful. The rest? Not so much.
-What need was there for a Tanooki suit that was identical to the Raccoon, with the exception of turning Mario into stone for a few seconds?
-Why make it so damn difficult to control flying with a cape power-up, especially when compared to the previous game (SMB3) from the series?
-Outside of swimming, what use was there for the Frog suit? Having fun using it on land?
-Am I correct in assuming that a powered-up Mario would only revert back to big Mario instead of small Mario in an effort to make the sequels to SMB a little bit easier?

You actually go back to small Mario when hit in the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros 3. They changed that for the US release.
