Hey DP, K've started what will be an ongoing series as I count down my personal top 100 NES/Famicom games list.
Yes, there are already plenty of NES top 10′s, top 25′s and even top 100 lists all over the net. So why should you care about my top 100 list?
My aim here was to make a unique list that goes beyond simply my picks and my thoughts about them. This list was carefully crafted based on my experience of well over seven hundred individual titles for both the NES and Famicom. My criteria for this list was based on three factors – Overall appeal, uniqueness, and how well each have aged.
This list will include every kind of software ever written for the hardware, whether it be NES, Famicom, unlicensed, prototype, homebrew or Hong Kong original pirate – if it was sold in some forum, it’s fair game for this list. The only type of games I have excluded are hacks of existing games. While many of these are incredible, I may at some point in the future write a separate list for these alone.
So here's part 1, #100-90. I will be continuing to work on this series with ten games per post. I hope you enjoy and discover some hidden classics you might have missed the first time around!

A good list so far. For your #80 entry, the NES/FC/GB game Yoshi (no Tamago) was also developed by GameFreak, making 2 games (at least) that GF developed on the NES.

This list is off to a very good start. I will be keeping an eye out for the rest of it for sure.
Tecmo Super Bowl was years ahead of its time. The cutscenes(I like how you get a cutscene when you clinch your division, no matter when you do it). The stat tracking, the unbelievably deep season mode, the player photos, the easy to operate battery back up saving. TSB was released in 91, it wasn't until 93, and 94 when the 16 bit Sega/Ea football games finally brought in those features, and even then some of them still weren't as well done as in TSB.
The 16 bit ports of TSB just aren't as charming as the original 8 bit game in my opinion. I remember being blown away at the fact that an NES football game could have so much depth, and replay value. The last season I played through I went 9-7 with the Redskins. Lost the Super Bowl to Buffalo 20-14.
The Little Mermaid is a very good game too. I highly recommend anyone to give it a try if you haven't already.

This is actually unrelated to the articles a bit, but I'm curious where did you get the awesome shelf that holds those NES games? As someone who buys a lot of NES games, I'd love to have something like that!

Holy Diver looks awesome. Clearly the game was inspired by the Dio song/video. RIP metal god.

A nice list so far but some of them are seen more like interesting diversions than great games imho. You did put shadow of the ninja on the list so that makes me really happy. Just when you think you played every NES game you wanted to, someone posts a huge list with more, doh.

Great list, nice web layout. How did you get Getsu Fuuma Den (English translation) to work? The original rom works on my emulator (Nestopia) and powerpak/NES, but the translation fails (unsupported mapper).
I also found your mention of the Macbee "properly colored" Sunsoft Batman, very helpful, because I'd been looking for that. Too bad he didn't mod the beta with the cutscenes.
PS: That Gun-Dec artwork is clearly Bruce Willis from Die Hard.

But that movie's only a bit over 100 minutes, it shouldn't have taken more than an afternoon! Oh ho ho ho ho...
In all seriousness, cool 6th entry in your top 100. It's been good reading, nice balance of screenshots and video to augment your wordings. Personally, there's a large chunk of the Famicom exclusive library with which I'm not very familiar so it's especially neat to hear about those gems.

The prices are only meant as a general guide. The price of Moon Crystal is based largely on trends on Yahoo Japan and Japanese importers who occasionally have it for sale. The prices are also based on cart only copies.

Figured as much. I guess I'd be unable to get that without an import service I guess, making it pretty much $90-100 for me in the end. :(
(last I saw a loose cart was on ebay for the game and two commons and went for about $90)

I used to own Contra, but where it's at now, who knows.. I definitely don't have it anymore. Duck Tales I rented as a kid, lots of fun. It's been on my wishlist since 2005 (when I suddenly decided I'd start collecting NES games), but somehow I never get around to purchasing it.

The "problem" is that the closer I get to that #1 slot, the more passionate I am about the games, the more I feel I have to write and gather some interesting tidbits about. Add to playing them all ten of them again to acquire pictures and commentary the process does take longer than I'd like.
I'd like to be finished tomorrow, but at the moment all I've got is the skeleton of my next article. I'm hoping it won't be another month before I'm finished, but it won't be right away.

I'm steadily finishing up the final top 10, but was wondering how you guys would prefer to see it. I'm wondering if it might not be a bad idea to do a final count down of only releasing one entry at a time once per day for the next ten days.
This way would allow individual comments to be left for each entry, allow me time to write the next one without keeping you guys waiting for the whole thing, and avoid a monstrously large final post. It will be a little bit better for everyone in my estimation. What do you guys think? The alternative is I keep you all waiting until I'm completely done the entire article and it takes a good deal of time to read through the whole thing.
Sound off below. I'll be deciding based on the feedback I get here and a few other places.

Dishing out the top 10 piecemeal seems like a reasonable thing to do. ShinobiMan highlights a good point, though - the sprawling reads of the previous chunks of your top 100 are awfully satisfying to work through. It doesn't make a terribly large difference either way but I say go with a one-at-a-time approach if you think it'll accelerate the writing process and generate more traffic.

Alrighty guys, I've decided the best way to tackle the final top 10 is individual posts once a day for the next ten days. Of course, you needn't agree with my choices, I'm just sounding my voice. I do hope for a discussion about these though, as they represent my absolutely favorites.
So here's #10.
http://satoshimatrix.wordpress.com/2012/03/02/top-100-nesfamicom-games-list-10/
Kirby's game is far too easy. I hesitate to even call it a platformer since there is no actual platforming required. You can literally float over all of the enemies and skip everything. It's like using the cape in Super Mario World to fly above the screen for the entire level.
I did try to give it my best, though. I don't recall how far I got. Maybe level eight?

You should revise the comment about the term "tetra" -- it is not the Russian word for four. Four is четыре. (I have no idea how to romanize Cyrillic words.) It vaguely resembles what "tetra" sounds like but it's still quite distant that I'd never have this cross my mind. However, it seems to be the derivation of the Greek word for four, though.
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/tetra-
Looking at the Russian word of the game, Тетрис, I see it sounds like tetra partially but it is still not a Russian word regardless even if that's the wordplay intended by the game's name. :|

I was just skimming but I saw this. "It unfortunately features many bugs in both games that make it inferior to the original standalone releases." Can you provide a citation for this? From my understanding, there were only one or two sprite updates in each game and the rest was supposed to be untouched compared to the original standalone releases. I have that dual cart and played through both FF1 and 2 and I don't recall any glitches so it has to be something minor or difficult to notice unless you know what you're looking for. The fact I played through those two games without raising an eyebrow is why I want to know what allegedly is wrong with them... :|
Regarding the description of that re-release, you could perhaps point out the package comes with a full-color double-sided map, one map for each game's overworld, and a guidebook that gives you an overview of everywhere you need to go through the two games along with appendices to check on things like the equipment stats and who can equip what (relevant to FF1 and certainly useful!) These bonus items are definitely what made selecting it over the two original prints an easy choice. :)
I'm also surprised FF1 was chosen over FF3 (maybe FF3 is higher up the list!) but I guess the historical significance combined with the lack of exposure of FF3 outside Japan were the influences. :(
FF3 blew me away as I thought it was so epic that it surpassed the two predecessors combined.

Yo, Satoshi Matrix! If Tengen Tetris had no multiplayer mode and copies of it was as abundant as Nintendo's version, would you still prefer it to Big N's official version?
No, probably not. The game's rarity isn't the primary reason I like it so much; I like it because of the multiplayer, especially the co-op mode with the computer. If Tengen Tetris was missing these options, it wouldn't be any better or worse than the Nintendo release. It's a moot point though - with all the options in Tengen's build, it is the clearly superior version of Tetris, at least in my opinion. The only other version that comes close to it is Tetris DS.
I'm also surprised FF1 was chosen over FF3 (maybe FF3 is higher up the list!) but I guess the historical significance combined with the lack of exposure of FF3 outside Japan were the influences. :(
Please read the previous entries. I put a lot of time and thought into them, and include hyperlinks to each of the previous entries right at the top of every article. As you said, I did indeed list Final Fantasy III in the overall top 100, just not in the top 10. It might be a technically superior game to Final Fantasy 1, but the historical significance and simple brilliance of the first game pushes it ahead of its sequel in the same way Metroid Prime would list higher on a GameCube list than Metroid Prime 2 Echos would.

It's been 90 titles over quite some time.. I forgot what some of them are already. For example I just looked at #10 to see Kirby and forgot that that was #10 which wasn't that long ago, haha. I do see FF3 was listed, I had forgotten this as well. :)
As for Metroid Prime I thought the first game was better than the second but it had nothing to do with Prime 1 being the first to put Samus into first-person, etc. I just liked the classic weapons system and environments in the world better than what MP2 had. :|
I remembered that there was one note I wanted to make but didn't get around to it. The entry to "Little Samson" made no reference to its real name.
Wiki Entry (JP) (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E8%81%96%E9%88%B4%E4%BC%9D%E8%AA%AC%E3%83%AA%E3%8 3%83%E3%82%AF%E3%83%AB)

Nice! One mistake in the text, heh. "treated to a bazaar scene" sounds like it should be written as, "treated to a bizarre scene". Nice bonus content and clarifying what the FDS disk provides (the musical difference made buying the original worth it, I loved it.) :)
For the laughs, maybe you can add that the NES version incorrectly romanized the planet's name as "Zebeth" ? When I saw the prologue screen on the NES version and saw that word I thought it was hilarious.

Yeah, it was pretty hard to avoid Engrish in those early days.

I should have guessed with you being such a fan of the Blue Bomber. ;)
Mega Man 2 is a phenomenal game, and I think it not robbery to award it the #2 slot on your list.

Random blocks (= Tengen) > Non-random block (= Nintendo). With all things being equal, Tengen's is the superior one.

Impressive Mega Man representation, all six of the NES games have placed on your top 100. No real disagreements there as they're all quality platformers, and I suppose it is a silly thing to limit consideration of titles because of a common franchise they belong to. That being said, I personally would draw the line at 2, 3 and either 4 or 5 for placement in my own personal top 100, that way the spectrum of major Mega Man innovation is captured without too much redundancy.

Did I miss the Snow Brothers or RC Pro-Am entries? Couldn't find them on the list.

Nice! I thought for sure MM 2 was going to be your number 1! Now I'm really excited to see what game holds that spot.
Thanks for featuring the childhood home movie of me receiving the game as a gift. I was happy to supply it and hope more get to relive the memory of receiving such a great game and memory.
Your write ups are top notch man! I will always be looking out for whatever you have to write about.

yeah, really. I don't think I shocked anyone who knows me that I placed a megaman two megaman games in the top 10. Both 5 and 2 are really top notch.

Well, I make no attempt to hide the fact that I consider all six of the NES Megaman games to be among the best on the system. It was just a matter of which would place where. I originally had Megaman 2, 3 and 5 all penciled in the top 10, but decided that 3 wasn't quite polished enough for that, and moved it to #11.

You didn't miss them; they're not there. I don't personally like either game. Snow Bros. seems like a bad clone of Bubble Bobble, and I can't think of a single NES racing game that I'm fond of. The only game that really gets the isometic racer genre to work is Rock 'n Roll Racing on the SNES. They're both honorable mentions though, just ones that I don't like myself.

Really, I thank you and your dad for the video. I hope that everyone who reads my article clicks on your video and watches the special memories. Do you happen to know if that was for your birthday, or christmas or what?
Oh and before you guys start asking, the #1 entry will not be published for a few days. I'm planning on doing a huge writeup and kind of have writer's fatigue at the moment.
One thing I'd like to do before the #1 is make up a visual aid for the 99 games leading up to #1. Basically, I'm thinking of a large png that has each game's titlescreens as well as a screenshot from the game. I can make this up myself, but my photoshop skills are somewhat lacking when it comes to creating a visually pleasing typeface for it. Would anyone be willing to help me out with that? All I really need help with is adding text in a visually pleasing manner to a giant image.
