I'm curious to see what game you have played the most/always seem to come back to. Mine would be super mario world. It was my first game and I have played through the entire game at least once a year, every year since I could pick up a controller. (Fun Fact: I was born in 1991, same year SMW came out so I didn't really play it until '94-'95) All the secrets in the game were either taught to me by my father, learned myself, or was told about by friends (ah the days before the internet)

So what game do you always seem to come back to.

According to the "my stats" section of my Xbox Live Rewards program, the game I have gone back to the most was Halo: Reach, to the tune of 40+ hours in June alone. Thats just not natural and I really need to get a life....or atleast play some other games.

Donkey Kong Country 2. I never tire of it, it's easily my favorite game of all time. Even my mom enjoys it :)

Suikoden. It's one of my favorite games, but it's not even my favorite in the series. Though it is pretty short and I can breeze through it in a day or two at this point. I find myself going back to this game when I just can't get into a game I'm playing. It gives me a nice break and then I can often go back and try again to get back into what I was playing.

Doom - I play through the original three episodes regularly.

Space Harrier. It's unbeatable, I know. But I love the super-cheesey '3D' graphics, the control is decent, and it smacks of nostalgia. An hour a week, at least.

So you mean the original, right? I feel like Suikoden 2 improved on every single aspect so I try to play that at least once a year myself.

Griffey SNES. In my career I've probably played 2,000 games... just something I'll never grow old of.

Sonic 2

I usually play till I hit the 'brick wall' of the game: Metropolis Zone Act 3. I could play this game forever.

Super Mario World.
LoZ: A LTTP
Super Puzzle Fighter

I'm pretty sure I'll play these until I'm dead.

If I had to choose one game, I'd pick Crusader of Centy. I just love it: the music, the charm, the characters. It's fun.

Of course, this is skipping puzzle games, because if I had to include those it'd probably be a three-way tie between Tetris, Tetris Attack, or Columns.

Phantasy Star Online for the Dreamcast and GameCube. I had a 100+ level character on the DC along with a couple more that were around level 40 to 50, then I moved to the GameCube and had a character up around level 120 before my 3rd party memory card got corrupted. I've built up several characters since starting over, but not to that level again.

Right behind it would have to be the game Roadkill. I originally bought the GameCube version, and when I found the Xbox version cheap I picked it up to compare. I then bought the PS2 version cheap just for the heck of it. I've completed the various versions at least 15 or 20 times, and I keep going back to it. I love vehicular combat games, and this one's got it all in my opinion.

Definitely NiGHTS into Dreams for Sega Saturn. For a good six to nine months I logged in a few hours of that game every day, Christmas NiGHTS included. There's just something about the game that really clicked with me, very peaceful floating and flying around in loops through picturesque environments is really, really fun.

I could also play Super Mario Bros. pinball by Gottelieb for a very, very long time as well. My favorite pinball machine, every time I go to the local farmer's market where an arcade inside has it, I need to play at least 5 or 6 games.

Donkey Kong Country 1. Nothing like trying to best my old run time of 43 minutes (closest I can get is 48 anymore). That and Link to the Past and Super Mario Bros 3.

I tend to go through cycles with these titles so every few years or so at least ill pick them up and play them exclusively for a while. They are all games that really stand up to the test of time IMO and I usually wait until they are pretty muddied in my mind again to play them.

My top 5:
Sonic 3 and Knuckles
Xenogears
Halflife 1
Total Annihilation
Final Fantasy VI

Pretty much impossible for me to nail one game down, if I had to it might be Street Fighter II SCE on the GEN/MD or maybe Alex Kidd in MW on the sms.

My top 5:
Street Fighter II SCE - GEN
Alex Kidd in MW - SMS
Bionic Commando - NES
Sonic games - GEN
SF Alpha 3 - PSX

Those games pretty much live in there respective consoles.

games I could play forever - there can't be only one:

Capcom vs. SNK 2 (Dreamcast)
MDK 2 (Dreamcast)
Record of Lodoss War (Dreamcast)
Super Mario 64 (N64) - the DS version is slightly better but I don't own a DS anymore
Goldeneye 007 (N64)
Wave Race 64 (N64)
Wip3out (PSX) - if i still had the system

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - everything about that game is awesome wrapped in another layer of awesome.

I have recently had the urge to dig out my N64 and romp around Goldeneye, Banjo Kazoiee and Zelda:OoT again.

Have to say that RPGs have always been my weakness and of them I keep going back to FFVII for PS1. I remember the day I first picked it up at our local Walmart and started playing it on a friday afternoon until the wee hours of the next morning and then realized I didn't have a single memory card for my fairly new PS1. I had to keep the machine on all night until the next morning when I could go to the store and buy a memcard. I remember being being very protective and telling my (then) young children to not mess with the machine or turn the power off or I would have lost like 10hrs of gameplay. Funny to think of it now that memcards are kind of obsolete.

I don't know how I missed this topic...

Anyway, games I come back to on a regular basis:

Secret of Mana
Kirby's Avalanche (or any Puyo Puyo variant)
Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness
Final Fantasy VI
Street Fighter II in various forms
Doom and its clones

and, uhhh... to be honest, I'm not really sure, because I'm not generally aware of my own habits. I'm pretty sure I come back to a LOT of games I own time and again and I just don't remember it.

As my all time favorite game, Final Fantasy VI requires a play through at regular intervals, usually around late October / early November to properly capture the mood.

The last two times were on the GBA, but I want to go back and do the SNES version again (because of GBA's butchering of the audio), preferably with bugfixes if I can find a patch that works with a flash cart.

MAME says my highest played games are:
Robotron, Ms. Pac Man, Donkey Kong, Q*Bert, and Elevator Action. (Tempest and Tron would be on there, but I don't like the MAME controls)

I've played Jumpman on the C64 on a regular basis almost since it first came out. Still can't get through Grand Loop.

I honestly couldn't narrow it down since there are several games that I've probably played hundreds of times over. The main ones are:

Astal
Black Tiger (arcade)
Fantasy Zone II: The Tears of Opa-Opa
Gaiares
Mystic Defender
NiGHTS into Dreams
Outrun (arcade/Saturn)
Rolling Thunder (arcade)
Rygar (arcade)
Space Harrier (arcade/Saturn)
Super R-Type
Syd of Valis
Thunder Force III

I know that the thread asked for the single most one, but I've honestly played what's probably amounted to thousands of hours of these games. I really don't know which one I've played the most. It's probably out of Final Zone II, Rolling Thunder, Rygar, and Space Harrier though.

More recent games that I've played hundreds of hour of and/or always come back to:

Left4Dead (360)
Left4Dead 2 (360)
Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny
OutRun 2 (XBOX)
Resident Evil Code: Veronica (Dreamcast)
Rez (PS2)

Space Harrier. It's unbeatable, I know. But I love the super-cheesey '3D' graphics, the control is decent, and it smacks of nostalgia. An hour a week, at least. What do you mean by unbeatable? Are you saying that you can't beat it because it's difficult? I can usually make it to the end about one out of every three tries (of the Saturn arcade port), and I don't use continues (I'm don't believe in the practice for arcade games).

Honorable mention: Outrun 2 Coast to CoastSuch an awesome, underrated arcade racer. Man, I love that game.

Castlevania, Castlevania 2 Belmon't Revenge, Mega Man, Final Fantasy(all revisions,) and Brigandine.

I go back to a lot of games, but I go back to these games far more than I do any other game I own.

The original Final Fantasy isn't even my favorite RPG or favorite Final Fantasy, but I've played through it more times than I've played through the rest of the series combined. Amazing game and has great replay value for an RPG because it has the perfect difficulty and you can go through the game as fast as you want.

This is the exact same with Brigandine Legend of Forsena and Grand Edition, both games which have better replay value due to the gameplay style than Tactics Ogre and Arc the Lad 2(my favorite games.)

For the NES: Tetris, Super Mario Bros., Contra (I use this game to test "new" controllers on), Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, Donley Kong Classics, and Bionic Commando.

For the Turbo-Grafx 16: Ninja Spirit and Military Madness

and Super Mario World and Kart for the SNES.

Rally Bike Arcade
Circus Charlie NES
Shadow Dancer Arcade
Crime Fighters 2 Arcade
Sonic 2 MD
Dragon Ninja Arcade
Bare Knuckle 2/3 MD
Shadow of Rome PS2 (Played the survival mode for about 4 hours straight was a bit tired so I called it a night.)
Golden Axe Arcade
King of Fighters 2002/2000/98 Random Select Single player and Multi
Mashed PS2
Mario Kart64 N64 (esp Multi, no other Kart game has done it for me :( they all just seem so drab in comparison or they have wonky handling.)
Flatout 2 PC, (have been able to kill everyone before the race ends. Just so much agression in the driving, BO just doesn't have the staying power although it is an awesome game but once I was done with it I was done FO2 is the game to play if you want to vent a bit.)
Penguin Brothers Arcade
Half Life 2
FEAR
Caveman Ninja Arcade
Manhunt PS2(didn't like part 2)
Ninja Gaiden Arcade
Double Dragon Advance GBA
Mega Man 2 NES
Ducktales NES

infinitely replayable, just play them in cycles.
would add more but feeling going to bed soon.

Return of Double Dragon

Always good to meet another fan. I love RoDD, just wish they took a little more TLC with it (i.e. a proper ending sequence would have been dope). But even as rushed as it was, I still consider one of the better beat 'em ups on the SNES. Fond memories of playing it with my old childhood friend super early on Sunday mornings after our epic Saturday night family friend sleepovers.

There's a lot I tend to go back to, but Bubble Bobble and it's various sequels are ones I find myself repeatedly playing when I absolutely don't feel like playing anything else at all. Same with Puzzle Bobble, I've got the original 4, plus a couple other incarnations, but the original 4 are the ones I stay with the most.

I've tried really getting into the 2 Puyo Puyo games I have (I don't count the Mean Bean Machine and Kirby ones on the 16 bit systems as PP games due to the radical changes to them, but they are two others I do own, the ones I have is Tsuu for the Saturn, and Sun for the PSX), but I suck at them, still fun to go back and try to improve.

First post here, but lets see...

Super Mario RPG-First game I ever bought with my own money, easy to follow story, simple but awesome fight mechanics (I always loved how it lets you control critical hits) and much more, I just love that game. Overlooked gem, imo. Played so many times I've lost count.

FFVII- Really nothing needs to be said, but before I ever got a PS, (I was a Nintendo kid) my mom worked at Hollywood Video and would rent me a PS and any game I wanted from the store. It was always FFVII and another game, and though I didn't have a mem card I would play it non-stop till it was the time it had to go back. -100 points for the first Reno battle on the Tower in the slums, I didn't know I could hit my guys out of those pyramid things, so he would get all my guys stuck in one and it was game over, which threw me into a MEGA RAGE EVERYTIME, you know, with no memory card and all... But yeah, just started another playthrough a couple nights ago.

LoZ: LttP/OoT- Growing up one of my earliest memories was watchin the Pops play the first Zelda, which at that age I wasn't very good at, but when LttP came out that one was MINE! First time I beat it was like a religious experience, with my Dad right there watching. OoT I have nothing to say,I'm sure you all know, freaking awesome. Before it came out I read every nintendo power article repeatedly, and once it came out and I took those first few steps out of Links house, I was floored. I still remember the shock of the beauty in that game, there was nothing else like it. Epic.

Capcom vs SNK 2 (ps2)- Played it religiously over at my buddies house. Buddy sells PS2. I snatch it up as quickly as possible. Play it religiously, and still to this day everytime I got some bud's comin over, Cap SNK (as we call it) always makes a mandatory appearance.

FFTactics-Insanely addictive, played through many times, and bought a psp solely for the updated version.

Honorable mentions:
Morrowind
SMB 1 2 & 3
BOF 3
Fallouts 1 2 & 3 (haven't played NV yet)
Goldeneye/Perfect Dark
and Kirby Super Star

Starcraft Brood War, Marvel vs Capcom 2, and halo 2. I probably have 6 months time purely on brood war.
