An anonymous reader writes "Sony has announced the hardware specs for the PS Vita and the details have confirmed most fans' hopes instead of their fears. The heart of the system is an ARM-developed Cortex A9 chip with four cores and a PowerVR SGX GPU. The screen is a 5-inch OLED capacitive touch-screen (with multi-touch) and a resolution of 960 x 544. The system will include 512MB of RAM and an additional 128MB of discrete VRAM. There will be front and rear cameras capable of 60fps at VGA resolution (640 x 480)."http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png (http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fgames.slashdot.org%2Fsto ry%2F11%2F08%2F20%2F227205%2FPS-Vita-Specs-Announced%3Futm_source%3Dslashdot%26utm_medium%3Df acebook) http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png (http://twitter.com/home?status=PS+Vita+Specs+Announced%3A+http%3A%2F% 2Fbit.ly%2Fq8l9Go)

My first thought is they should jump to 1 GB of RAM, but then I realize that I am talking about a handheld...

The Vita is probably the coolest piece of hardware since the iPad.

I am not a big handheld guy, but this one has me interested for sure.

How much you want to bet they had the iPhone and iPad in mind when they designed it? And didn't the Dreamcast have a Power VR graphics chip in it? Or am I thinking of the Sega of America console that was on the drawing board in the late '90s until the Japanese branch vetoed it since they believe all foreign game technology is inferior to Japanese systems?

It's Gamespy, so maybe take it with a grain of salt, but there was apparently more than ethnocentrism (http://archive.gamespy.com/articles/june03/dumbestmoments/readers/index3.shtml) to Sega dropping the Western design. 3dfx messed up bad.

Unfortunately the iPad was about as cool as patte. SD card slot? USB? Flash? Etc. Unless you love Apple products for being Apple products then by all means.

Interesting that the Vita is already being superseded in terms of horsepower by phones. Sony made the PSP more powerful than the DS as a very deliberate, calculated move. Not making sure that the Vita is far enough of consumer electronics already on the market is...interesting.

The Samsung Galaxy S II is basically the same thing with 1gb of ram, dual core A9 instead of quad (don't think quad core will really help but we shall see) but with a non PowerVR chip. Who wants to bet something that blows the Galaxy S II out of the water is just around the corner?

I don't think it's that important for it to outperform $500 tablets.
No amount of silicon can make up for the lack of proper tactile controls.

I agree with you on this, Sony might be going after the tablet and smartphone markets somewhat with the Vita, but it's still going to be your core gamers who will be buying the Vita for the most part.

Well, I felt the same way for a long time.. I was very anti-Apple for the past 25 years, but after buying my gf an Ipod 4th Gen for Xmas last year (Hey, she wanted one..) I started tinkering with it when Capcom released a new Ghouls N Ghosts game. I actually started really liking the iPod. It's really all about the software. It's like they tweaked it to perfection to the point where you really can't imagine it any other way.

I've been a portable console guy since the Game Boy and still am.. I bought a 3DS at launch and pre-ordered a Vita, but I still think if Apple keeps attracting more big Japanese companies to produce games for $1 - $5 each, it's really hard to justify buying a $45 game for my 3DS or Vita.

I really hope the Sony Vita has a decent web browser on it too, because the 3DS browser is trash. It locks up on files larger than 1MB and can't even load YouTube.

I still plan on buying an Ipad2 (or maybe 3) this Fall. Again, it's really about the apps more than anything else. With the new cloud saving, there is no need for card slots or hdds either. iPad + Netflix + eMagazines + Garage Band and I'd get my $500 worth out of it! :)
