I'm wondering if anyone has been listening to any music that pays homage to retrogaming. There's quite a bit out there.

Rymdeglage - 8-bit Trip is a song about NES and Commodore 64. The video uses Legos to represent pixel graphics.

mind.in.a.box - 8 Bits is a song from mind.in.a.box's latest album, which itself is a tribute album to Commodore 64.

There's also OCRemix, but I wanted to focus more on original tunes, and not remixes of actual gaming songs.

Well, I know lots of guys that do original chiptune music. I don't know if they're so much "tributes" as just people liking the medium, though.

If it counts (it's not original), my fiance just completed a chiptune rendition of a Frost* song, staying within the limitations of the Genesis and aiming to sound like Sonic 2:

I really dig that Frost* cover. I'll have to check out the source material later.

There's not a lot out there that directly pays tribute to gaming, barring some nerdcore and other lyricists. I'm a big fan of The Megas, a band that covers Mega Man songs with lyrics. Good stuff.

And I know you wanted to avoid straight covers, but this one is new and way too good to ignore: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ryh-QJNSWEU

those are awesome.

I make some original tunes in the style of NES-era game music.

Check out some of it here:
