View Full Version : Your Gaming "Dirty Little Secret" - Let's Hear it!

Everyone has one - something in their gaming collection, gaming style, gaming preferences, whatever it is that makes you keep it all to yourself to avoid those horrified looks from your friends. It shouldn't be as simple as "I have a Barbie game in my collection" as most of us do, but "Barbie Horse Adventures is my favorite Xbox game" - now THAT is what I'm talking about!! :)
I'll start by saying that mine isn't quite as embarrasing as the above example, but it's one that when I mention it to other game collectors, they gasp and look at me like I have three heads. My collection is pretty large and contains some pretty nifty stuff (if I do say so myself) including over 60 unique consoles from classic to current. I like to collect just about anything, including rarities like CIB Mega Drive, Pink Hello Kitty Dreamcast, Tommy Hilfiger Gameboy Color, complete Microvision boxed, and more. Just over 3000 games and I can say that there's one system I've never been able to pick up, not really due to rarity, just because I don't really care about it that much. It's one of the most popular systems ever made, and I still don't have one. What's my Dirty Little Secret?
I Don't Own a Playstation 2.
Why? I haven't found one that's a perfect deal yet. Too expensive, bad condition, missing pieces, no games included...whatever, I just always find an excuse to walk away from a purchase. Part of it is that I realize I will then have to more actively purchase PS2 games, and that's a 1000+ game library that I'm not looking to add to my want list at this point. Oh, and the original Xbox was way better (and still is to me).

I NEVER* play JRPGs when family members are around to see me playing. I feel strangely uncomfortable and don't want to answer any questions about why I would play "such strange games".
* With extremely rare exceptions. I played through Earthbound up through Giant's Step the day I got it while my cousins watched and cheered me on but I can't imagine they remember it almost 15 years later.

At least several times a week I pretend to be a sexy girl gamer on Xbox Live. I like to let the guys know that I'm single and, like all girls, I only play naked. Sometimes I'll pretend to play really poorly. While getting shot over and over again I'll comment that the controller rumble is giving me naughty thoughts and I'm finding it hard to concentrate. It's around this point that the one remaining person calls me a queer and disconnects from the game. I fire up my Game.com and play Resident Evil 2 while uncontrollably sobbing and spluttering insults towards myself. I fall asleep in a pool of my own tears.
Nah, just kidding - although after reading that over I might try it sometime. I can't really think of any dirty little secrets. I kind of enjoyed Driv3r and Wreckless for the Xbox and have actually finished Wreckless more times than some AAA games. Best I got, unless I make up a story about finding a penis inside my GameCube broadband adapter package.
... and I will if I have to.

I once bought a copy of Kinect Sports from Goodwill as a Target refund. The disc had really severe ring scratches and even though it would load it was so scratched up that you could hardly get any of the events to load far enough to play. So I went to Gamestop, bought a used copy of the same game and then returned it with the scratched up disc while keeping the good one.

Less time consuming? Yes. Cheaper? No because I ultimately got my money back. Resurfacing is an option for the future but there are very few places around here that do this and the only one I know of personally has been closed for remodeling over the last month.

This stays somewhat true for me too. I mean, if I get home from a party drunk as hale and I decide to play some video games, it's never long before I turn the system off because I'm unable to play the game due to my drunkenness. But if I drink three or four beers while playing Left 4 Dead, I kick ass.

Since I started this penis...umm I mean thread last week, I've actually come up with a few other dirty gaming secrets but this one stands out.
I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 games for the current gen systems (360, ps3, wii, psp, nds) that are still sealed. If I see a "deal" at a store for a new game, whether I actually want to play it or not, sometimes I'll just buy it and put it in the collection, thinking I'll eventually get to it. Well, let's just say I don't always get back to them. I know I'm not the only person here who has this situation so it's not so "dirty" in this crowd, but when I tell my non-hardcore gaming friends this, they flip! Of course most of them only have maybe 10-20 games in their collections total, and most of those are either Rock Band or Wii Sports-based titles.

I know exactly what you mean.
Now that I'm older and can usually by whatever game whenever I want I've fallen into the trap of buying games that I don't really play. When I was younger unless something was horribly buggy I would usually play whatever game it was until I had gotten completely tired of it then picked up another. Now however a game can sit on my shelf for months unplayed and I know the younger version of myself would be in shock at this. lol

I know, as a kid you usually had one or two games you could play (at least for me since we sold the games we were finished with :() so you just kinda had to have fun with those games. Now I'm too spoiled with game choices that I sit a while thinking "what should I play now?", sometimes I give up and do something else entirely. And I haven't finished half of my games even! I play something, have fun with the game, but then I get a new game and start playing that instead and I forget about the old one. So when I try to go back to the previous game I say "screw it" because I can barely remember where I was, what had happened or where to go. Eventually I start all over again.
Seriously, these are the worst gaming sins.

THIS is another for me, something I still struggle with when I see some killer deals. It used to be that way with older games-see a bunch on sale, buy them with intent of playing them and then they just sit. It moved on to modern games and was then bolstered by my brother-in-law who would sweep through and buy a stack at a crack because they were on the cheap.
I swore I wouldn't do that, even picked on him a bit as I knew he'd never play them (still doesn't as he primarily watches TV). Then suddenly I started to do it more when prices on new games started dropping soon after release. When I finally got around to playing them, I didn't like the games, so I sell them off at a slight loss a chalk it up as an "extended rental".

Yeah, I figured that number might be pretty low around here. I do remember a time about 3 years ago that I would buy the games and open them, to try to jumpstart playtime and many of them still never got played. So I also have a bunch of open untouched games...oh well....looks like I need to go buy some more....

Its funny I guess I shouldn't be so OCD but my whole life I've been insanely protective of my stuff and try to keep it looking as close to brand new as possible. Most of my game discs still look almost brand new years later at least ones I've owned since new; I hardly can bring myself to buy a used game if it isn't complete and looks to be close to the condition I'd keep it in. And I've been guilty of buying a second copy myself. I even did that one time with a strategy guide I had that got some coffee spilled on it.

I'm the same way about my gaming magazines. When I get a Game Informer in the mail that's all beat up or torn, I get really ticked and immediately start looking for a replacement. I'll sometimes take it to Gamestop and switch it out with a nice new one from their checkout desk pile. And my nicer mags, like Retro Gamer or GamesTM, if one of my son's friends gets hold of it and wrinkles it or tears it, it just pisses me off... My secret is that while I love playing RPGs, I don't have the time anymore to discover and solve all the puzzles on my own. So every time I get a new RPG I go to GameFAQs and download a walkthrough for it. I'm so ashamed *sob*.
Back in the day (and before the internet) I solved all the RPGs I bought on my own. Bards Tale I-III, Wizardry I-V, Wasteland, Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior I-IV, etc. Of course even if I still had the time I don't think I'd have the patience to do that anymore though.
I guess my other secret is that I didn't play Mario 64 until it was released on the Wii a few years ago. I hated it!

Hmmm, let's see. Well, prior to 1999, when I bought a PlayStation, I was anti-anything not Nintendo and owned no systems created by any other company. It's not that I blindly worshiped everything put out by Nintendo, I just had a negative view of Sega and Sony. It probably didn't help that Sega made itself look like a jackass in its marketing campaigns. I preferred Nintendo's approach of simply ignoring the other companies and just showing what made their games/systems awesome, rather than constantly insulting the competition like Sega. But I suppose Sega wanted to seem like a more "mature" company, kind of a "bad boy", so that strategy worked well enough for them. I guess to a teenage boy, they'd seem cool, but as a young girl, it just found it off-putting. And wasn't there another one where they were insulting the Game Boy by dressing it up like a doll? Yeah, not a great way to win over female gamers.

I recently of went off on my ex's 6 year old son because I watched him throwing away the (mint) manual to his newly acquired copy of Burnout for the PS2. I get that he's a young kid and doesn't bother even trying to read them, but then why remove them from the case at all, let alone toss them into the trash?
I asked him "What the hell are you doing? Why are you throwing that away?!" when I saw what he was doing, and he nonchalantly said "I don't need it." and shrugged his shoulders. I immediately fished it out the trash and started to lecture him. He has a habit of removing the graphic inserts from the game cases and destroying them as well, along with most of the cases themselves, and then he leaves the discs laying around in stacks getting scratched to shit.
I probably shouldn't care, but it really peeves me when people are careless and wasteful like that, kids and adults alike. It makes it that much worse when it's something I'm close to, like video games. It's not because I'm older now either -- I was really young when I got my first game system (4 or 5), and I would have NEVER dreamed of tossing the manuals. I use to read them over and over again, and I loved looking at the artwork or the Atari 2600 mini-catalogs. I'm not one of those guys who tossed or discarded my toys and regret the hell out of it today because they're collectibles now. I lost a lot of my shit because my parents would give my stuff away to the Goodwill against my wishes...but that's a different thread altogether.
I suppose a part of it is that I don't want him (or any kid) to have those regrets -- and even if he doesn't care about his games/toys/media when he's older, he needs to learn to care for his belongings. His mother doesn't have much money (like, AT ALL), and the PS2 system and games he owns were all given to her from a friend. That only made things worse in my eyes. We were poor for a while growing up, and it was a huge deal to get toys and shit when I was a kid, so I always tries to take care of my stuff. He's in the same situation. I'll try to explain to him that you can get more games to play, in trade, if you take care of the ones you have. Hopefully that will take and I won't look like an huge ogre with OCD, scolding a 6 year old boy about the importance of keeping games complete, and in good condition. :|

I thought Sega was an American company until around the time the Dreamcast came out. I didn't even know the Master System existed until 6 months ago, or that Sega had been producing consoles even before the NES came out in Japan. I must have just assumed they appeared out of thin air with the Genesis in 1989.

I threw away the boxes to 2600 games, but that's probably only because they weren't purchased with my own money. I was too young. I still kept every manual and catalog that came with them.

I collect crappy games. I have Powerpuff Girls Chemical X-Traction, Plumbers Don't Wear Ties, Spawn the Eternal, Superman 64... that I got all because of their s*** value.

I use Game Genie codes on almost every game I play, if the game even has codes to use. I do try to get as far as I can without the Game Genie (and sometimes I skip it and use save states instead if I'm playing on the computer), but I usually need all the help I can get. The casual gamer's lament.
