1942 arcade alternate ending?

there has to be someone else out there that has seen this. i swear that i saw an alternate ending to 1942. i saw someone playing the game along time ago and before they could finish all 32 stages suddenly the end screen appears saying something like the enemy is too powerful and cannot go on and game over. and no i'm not talking about running out of lives. they finished the current level and suddenly that appeared. for some reason i thought that was the ending to the game until i played it on mame and saw the we give up ending.

please tell me if anybody has seen this and i'm not crazy.

Could it have something to do with performance in the stages? I seem to recall being graded at the end of a level but I could be completely wrong.

it had nothing to do with grades. the guy had plenty of lives left he finished he level and still had something like 10 to go and it suddenly was game over with that strange message. maybe it's something that happens if you don't get very good grades but that seems pretty stupid.

okay it's most definately not a grading thing. i loaded the game up in mame and turned invincibility on and sped up the game as fast it could and just sat back not destroying anything other then the super planes. and i still made it all the way through the 32 stages and got the we give up ending.

but does the japanese version end before you complete all 32 stages because i remember the most of all that that strange ending happened before it said last stage. quite a few stages before it said last stage.

i've not heard of this ending, but you could always try checking the rom iamge and see if you can find any trace of the text? also check any bootlegs of the game as well.
