Hello from Reddit! I'm a mod over on www.reddit.com/r/gamecollecting (http://www.reddit.com/r/gamecollecting) and would love to be a part of this community :)
Digital Press has long been my #1 source for rarity research and I have popped into the forums once or twice... It seems like a great group of people!
I live around Nashville, Tennessee and began collecting SNES games a year or two ago. I am on a mission to collect all North American releases!
As my basement became cluttered with stack after stack of SNES games, I knew I had to build some shelves, and wanted to build something really nice... ...something that would look good in a nice home someday :) ...so I went all out!
There's plenty of info in the captions and every single game you see on those shelves has been disassembled, cleaned inside and out (contacts, every corner and crack, label... EVERYTHING).
I hope, one day, to have one of the cleanest and highest quality SNES loose cart collections on earth :) I'm about 36% of the way there!
Enjoy!

Nice to see a fellow redditor (and handyman!) here. The shelves look great, though I don't really like the color. Personally I'd have painted them black, though admittedly black is my go-to color whenever I'm finding new storage :)
As an aside, didn't someone here create a website for showing off their shelving solutions? This should definately be submitted there as well. Everything homemade is a-ok in my book!
EDIT: Indeed, someone did! Flack made www.lovethyshelf.com (http://www.lovethyshelf.com), and you should hurry over there and submit this!

Excellent photos! Good luck on the quest for the 724! I recently built a shelf too, but it was just a book shelf. Now I think I will build my own custom shelf for just SNES games.
As to the color, the stain looks really nice. And nice choice on the satin finish, too glossy can be a bad thing.
Welcome to the forum.

You did it right. Good job.

Those shelves show real dedication! Classy craftsmanship. My ideal SNES storage would be to set a bunch of those 18-capacity cartridge holders (http://www.mediafire.com/imageview.php?quickkey=z9hbh7dqn4h9ido&thumb=4) into an appropriately sized shelf, but I'm a sucker for horizontal cart orientation.

That actually would be my one beef. I like horizontal cart storage but that presents far more challenge.

I hope to one day build a set of shelves like that. Good stuff.

bunnybum - Thanks for the heads up! I submitted my shelves to lovethyshelf
Frankie - Thanks! I really like how the rosewood stain took to the oak. The pictures really don't do it justice. I'll definitely create a proper intro post if I have some time later :)
johno - I'm glad my dad was patient enough to pause at key points in the construction so I could photograph the progress :) Without his help it would've taken forever to make them! I definitely wanted a more subtle look, and I wanted multiple coats, so satin it was :)
skaar - *tips hat*
Drixxel - You're telling me! I spent multiple entire weekends working on nothing but those shelves but MAN does it feel good every time I put a new game on the shelf. Now I actually have a visual indicator of where I stand in my quest for completion. I definitely considered the horizontal look, but a number of things inclined me to opt out of that:
- It'd end up looking like a massive grid (I wanted a more open feel)
- The man hours/difficulty constructing it (not to mention staining and sealing!)
- Difficulty cleaning/dusting
- Overall size (With 750 spots, the shelves are already 6 feet tall and 5 feet wide), the extra height added from all of the extra shelves would make it enormous)
...but I know not everyone is going for completion, so for a smaller collection I would definitely lean toward the horizontal look! :D Those cartridge holders are cool.
Spongerob - let me know if you have any questions when you do ;)

What did it end up costing you overall?

I actually got a ridiculous deal on the lumber. The oak alone should've been over $300, but the store only charged us for one board. We took it all back to pay the remaining balance, but they thanked us for our honesty and refused to let us pay for the rest.
Between stain, screws, staples, and top-coat, it was probably around or just under $200. Normally I'd expect it to cost $400-$500.

VERY Nice Job!!
Looks like it has a very small footprint! What is keeping it from leaning? Did you anchor it to the wall at all?

Those are certainly nice shelves, and I like to stain choice. Black was mentioned as an alternative choice, but I feel black shelves are sort of dated. You run a greater chance of it looking tacky with black than any other colour (go into any rent-a-own store and you'll see what I mean).

:D Yes! It is very slim. Because of how it's constructed, and because it's made of oak, it is very rigid, so it does a fantastic job of staying up without anything.
For now, I've put four popsicle sticks underneath each front corner, and I'll be anchoring it to a wall at some point in the future.

Yeah, black can be nice, but it can also be very bachelor-pad-looking and I wanted them to be classy enough that a future spouse wouldn't want to trash em :P I spent probably 75% of my time just staining and painting top coat after top coat (100s of square feet of top coat...), so while it took a LOT longer than painting, I'm very proud of the result.

Looks amazing! I'm going to be doing a shelving project pretty soon myself for all my SegaCD/Saturn games since they have such weird dimensions. Sadly though, due to my budget I think I will be leaning more towards MDF since it's such an inexpensive type of material.

Very, very nice. I envy people who have the resources, skills, and connections to do this kind of thing.
Also, thanks for that Reddit link, I don't use the site but that might be interesting to look at occasionally.

Hm... not sure. I'd like to see it though. Link?
That is a mighty fine collection :) I see you even collected demo carts as well. I'd like to get my hands on a few. Did you take the plunge on the MBR/Speed Racer cart? I don't know if I'll ever bring myself to be able to buy that one.
...no super noah's ark 3D? ...or is that the one about 10 from the end (I just put mine in with all the rest)
I'm up to 277. O..o One day I'd like to make repros of Star Fox 2, Terranigma, and Secret of Mana 2 (I have a few killer instinct carts with ruined labels). You going to snag Nightmare Busters when it comes out? :P

Yes I think I will have to get that Nightmare busters! :) been reading about it
here is the link to the reddit story on my vid
http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/da8kl/i_wish_somebody_would_make_a_videogame_collector/
Yes Mountain bike rally/speed racer is in there
Yes Super noah's ark 3d is about 10 from the bottom left...you are correct
I do have Star fox 2, and I want secret of mana 2, totally forgot about terranigma
I have 724-out of 724 (based on the master list I created over at nintendoage)
people always used to claim 720 or 722 ;)
as far as the military games...(if counted...they are 725 and 726) I have MACS but not MTS...man those are hard to find!
so your looking at 724 + 1 military game + 1 repro + 13 of 14 NFR carts...Damn that elusive MK II NFR! :)

Awesome shelves, I like the stained oak!
If I ever go for a full snes set (and actually live in one spot long enough to own furniture), I want to make a shelving unit similar to a cd holder rack. I imagine that would require some custom plastic works, though.
