An anonymous reader writes "Atari Inc. has launched another round of cease-and-desist letters targeted at what remains of its fan community. Having threatened homebrewers for the Atari 2600 and 8-bit systems, as well as emulator authors for mobile platforms like Android, they're now upping the ante by menacing Atari emulator authors on the Dreamcast and sites with Asteroids in the name (though in fairness, that site apparently once hosted a version of the Asteroids game). The working theory is that the company is planning a big push into the mobile market, and is trying to eliminate everything it believes could threaten its latest attempts at reviving the brand name. However, the emulators in question appear to have no copyrighted content from Atari, so it's unclear what exactly Atari believes the infringing material to be."http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png (http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fgames.slashdot.org%2Fsto ry%2F11%2F09%2F02%2F1825230%2FAtari-CampDs-Emulators-Site-About-Asteroids%3Futm_source%3Dslashdot%26utm_medium%3Df acebook) http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png (http://twitter.com/home?status=Atari+C%26amp%3BDs+Emulators%2C+Site+A bout+Asteroids%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2FngkeyP)

So how long until they hit AtariAge and piss off what's left of their fanbase?

I was thinking exactly that. Although I'm pretty sure Al is expecting to get that letter (if he hasn't already).

What Atari (or their parent company) needs to do is take the expertise and vision of these homebrew game makers and consult with them on how to move forward with the Atari brand and IP's. Just because the law states that Atari can send orders to stop using their IP's doesn't mean that they should do so. It's not like Atari is competing with bootleggers that place $$$ above a quality product. These people are not getting rich off of their homebrew programs! These people actually LOVE the Atari brand and have stuck with it even though it's, in all practical definitions, dead. Although I am a strong supporter for corporate rights and can actually understand the legitimacy of some cease and desist orders this is just plain ridiculous and can do nothing but harm for the Atari brand.
