View Full Version : If you are getting a Sega CD, which version to get?

If you are buying a Sega CD, would it be better to get a Model 1 Sega CD with the motorized tray, or the other version, with the pop open tray?
I have a Model 1 Genesis, but I can easily get a Model 2 Genesis, so that really isn't a factor.
What I'm wondering, is which unit would hold up better over time?
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks!

The model 2 doesn't have the disc tray problems that seem to plague the model 1.

My honest opinion? Neither!! Go for the Multimega (CDX) all the way! Sooooo mcuh better - possibly one of the sexiest looking consoles around. It's so sleek and chic!

If you can get your hands on a CDX, do so. It's so small and compact. I don't really like the Sega CD, but it's so small that with my minimum space it makes it worth it sorta. Sort of :-D

You're going to pay a whole lot more for a CDX than for a model 1 or 2. I'd go with the second revision, for while the footprint may be larger it doesn't make the setup as 'tall' as the first one, so it may fit in entertainment centers better. The original Genesis will fit in the model 2 Sega CD, you'd just need to find the spacer that was included with it.. I happen to have one (the spacer) that I'm not using, I could probably let it go.

I was thinking, that because the Model 1 Sega CD cost so much originally, that maybe it was built with much better parts then the pop up version, which was probably made with much cheaper components.
Of course that motorized cd tray is a concern. It's only a matter of time before those puppies wear out.

Yep, those model 1's were built like bricks- but with slide out trays you're getting into messy territory such as drive bands and gears. Good luck replacing a band with the right size when it snaps. VCR repair is hard enough.

I've got two model 1's and neither one works. Personally though I think they are the coolest looking ones sitting under the 1st genny.

I'd go with a CDX or model 2!

CDX would be a good bet, followed by a Model 2 (Which I own right now). EVERY Model 1 I have ever owned in the past had big problems, mostly with running Mortal Kombat and freezing my other games.

I have a model 2 and it's never given me any problems, I also think it looks nicer. As for the cdx....I'd say yea get that, but if you eventually want to get a 32x I believe there are compatibility issues with the cdx

I have mode 1 and 2..(Perfectly Working)
I think The first one looks better, but I like the second one because it has the quick open door to insert the CD....
I also have several non working units of both models for spare parts.
It's late and dark in my living room so I can't look,,
But which one ..Requires a Reversed polarity AC adapter..It looks just like the standard Genesis AC adapter..and easy to get mixed up.
You're all wrong. You need a Laseractive with the Sega module.

The man knows what he's talking about. It blows all of the Sega made hardware out of the water. If he hadn't said it, I would have said it.
