Bored at my desk today I was wondering what is the highest officially numbered sequel?

The best I could think of was Final Fantasy XIV. Most other long running franchises seem to ditch their numbering pretty quickly.

For console releases, Beatmania IIDX 16: Empress on PS2 is the highest I can think of. If you're counting arcade, they're on Pop'n Music 20 right now.

Check out Simulmondo's Amiga games (http://hol.abime.net/hol_search.php?N_ref_developer=540). Dylan Dog goes to 17 (with some outside the main series), Diabolik goes to 12, and Time Runners goes all the way to 30!

Of course, these were released with magazines, so basically episodic gaming back in the mid-90's... whether that counts as official sequels is up to you.

even better question is what is the largest franchise in terms of games dedicated to a story or charecter.

Say for example mario
you have SMB1,2,3 japanese 2, SMW, SM64,Super Mario Kart, Super Mario Kart 64 ect ect ect ect ect

That's probably going to be Mega Man. As has been said by norkusa, Pop'n Music is probably the longest running "numbered" series.

Golgo doesn't even start until 13. All sarcasm aside as a child when I got Golgo 13 Top Secret Episode for one of my birthdays, one of my cousins did ask me if I had the other 12, and she was dead serious in the questioning.

Probably either Final Fantasy or Madden

I would have thought it would be Mario. He's popularly quoted as having over 200 games.

I think next is probably either Sonic or Megaman.

As far as numbers go, Winning Eleven -whatever springs to mind. So does Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Probably either Final Fantasy or Madden

Madden has atleast 20 entries so it might be the highest.

There were 5 main games.

Also, Panic Bomber and Bomberman B-Daman (some marble toy spinoff thing?)

Top Gear 3000!:D

Now seriously: IMHO, a "sequel" is another game in the same fixed series; like, Megaman 6 is a sequel to the original Megaman; Megama X isn't. Of course that's the way I see it...it makes more sense in my head (and makes organizing thing more easy).

Seeing things that way, the KOF series (spin-offs aside) is pretty damn long, ins't it? The current one is numbered "XIII".

Madden has atleast 20 entries so it might be the highest.

Madden just use the year as it's suffix though so I don't think it really counts.

Since the next Mario Kart has the rather mundane Mario Kart 7 title, (despite no other previous entry having its number in its title), would that be the first instance where a series has suddenly changed to the number system mid-franchise?

or another interesting question
Which Side Franchise has the most games

like for instance mario kart vs Mario Party series

I can almost guarantee you that they'll change the title before release. They're just desperate to advertise whatever they have at the moment, even if the games are early in production, just so they can move more 3DS systems.

I'm pretty sure there are series that have switched to normal numbering, but no examples are coming to mind. I think a great deal of developers go by numbers for simplicity, even if the final product doesn't have one, though, and sometimes it'll even be on the packaging but get lost in localization. Like Super Mario World also had "Super Mario Bros. 4" on the Super Famicom packaging and the Star Ocean games, starting with the third since the second has "Second" in the title anyway, also say "Star Ocean 3" and "Star Ocean 4" on the Japanese cases.

That's probably going to be Mega Man.

Doesn't Sonic have more than 300 games that he's in now? I feel like that might be the winner. Sonic sure gets around.

Once again, the KOF series comes to mind. They changed from years to numbers after the 10th game (2003 -> XI).

IIRC Sonic has around 60 games or so. Mario has over 200 (apparently, I've never counted).
