I have a Nintendo 64 console which I have owned since its initial release, first gen. Now lately, and this seems to happen more often with certain cartridges than others, it randomly resets during gameplay and sometimes resets multiple times after the first reset until it stabilizes again. I tried to reach in there and clean the contacts with a q-tip but that failed and didn't work all too well. Also, I hear you can short the pins by powering it on before drying it which I might have done but seriously doubt because I have managed to play some games for hours without having problems but some cartridges have more issues than others. I tried cleaning them the best I could but also continue to have the problem. Does anyone have some advice? Ive had it too long to want to get rid of it or replace it entirely.

Are you using a third party expansion pack? Sometimes they can over heat and cause the console to reset or not work at all. Another thing it could be is the power adapter maybe be going out.

My expansion pack is first party. I'll look into the AC adapter exchange, thanks.

If you pick up the console and shake it around a little, does it reset more then?

You probably just need to get a cartridge system cleaning kit and thoroughly clean the connector in the system. Then clean your games again for good measure.
