I just picked up a 3ds and the hinges are very sturdy and tight now. I have also read online that this defect was fixed with all the red ones. Thought i would just share in case someone was on the fence about buying one because of the loose hinges.

Although I was unaware of any hinge problem as a new owner be wary of the screen scratch issue.

On some of the earlier models the rubber "feet" installed by Nintendo are insufficient in preventing the bottom screen's casing from scratching the top screen. Initial it looks like two lines on the top screen that match up with the bottom screen. They are easy to wipe away but people have reported having the lines permanently etched into their console.

yes i do see those lines. good thing they are on the screen protector though great heads up though. hmm the most simple things that don't get fixed.

I was planning on picking up a red one, so this is good news to me. Though it appears I should also pick up a screen protector as well. :)

Ya, I don't have any hinge problem and I just use the foam it came with between the screens. One person actually took the rubber feet off of his 360 and put them in the top corners so I didn't close so much.

Going to get the next revision, with hopefully fixed batteries. Plx Nintendo.
But good to know they are working on the issues. <3

Both my friend and I have a black 3DS but only mine has loose hinges... Annoying.

Does it still scratch the bottom screen if you're too rough on it?

Does it still scratch the bottom screen if you're too rough on it?

I heard it does, but the first thing I did was to apply a screen protector like every sensible person would do.

Ive got a black 3DS. The hinges are fine, but I get the dual screen lines. Luckily, like Patney, the first thing that I did was stick on screen protectors.

i have a black launch unit and my hinges are tight, but i do get the vertical lines. i have a screen protector which i put on day one, and to remedy the lines i used the feet from my 360.
you can also pull out the bumpers from the 3ds and put double sided tape on them then reapply them,it pushes them out just a bit where it prevents the screens from touching, and best of all it doesnt void your warranty.

The red 3DS isn't defect free. There's one common defect. It doesn't have dual analog yet. Well. That, the battery life, and the screen thing, so three things.

I have a launch unit with tight hinges as well. I pulled the rubber "feet" from a DS Lite I was working on to protect the top screen from bottom scratches...

Does anyone think that the rubber foot mod might affect the hinges over time? I mean if you got the thickness just right I'm sure it would be fine but too much and you're putting extra pressure on the hinge. Just a thought really. I got screen protectors and of you prefer you can always put a cloth between the screens when closed.

I am concerned about weakening the hinges as well. However if you just use a screen protector you will still get lines on the top screen, they will just be scratched into the protector rather then the screen itself. You'll have to periodical change screen protectors or just get used to the lines on the screen.

I have also read reports of the paint cracking issue on the d-pad and the face buttons may be caused by contact with the top screen when its depressed hard (like in a pock or in closing) with the bottom screen. I haven't seen this on my system at all but I had also done something similar to the 360 rubber feet fix.

The only time I've gotten smudges on my screen was one time when I had a cloth between the screens there was one vertical line on the right side of the screen wiped right off though. But I think that may have been something unrelated to this issue honestly. Though even with the screen protector I still use a cloth in between the screens mostly because I'm anal retentive.

I don't believe anything people say about DS systems anymore, regardless of model. Remember the hinge problems on the DS Lite? That wasn't supposed to happen on any DS made 2007 or later. Lo and behold, my Mario edition DS Lite, made in 2008 I believe, has a cracked hinge. The build quality in DS systems is a far cry from the Game Boy line.
