View Full Version : Famicom/Super Famicom AC adaptor

I have searched online for this, but there are many conflicting stories it seems. I have heard you can use a US Sega Master system ac on them, or a US Sega genesis model 1 ac adapter. is this true? I really don't want to fry my new systems. thanks!

oh, I also have one of those 3 in 1 "compatible with NES/SNES/GENESIS" after market things, would this work?

I also got a famicom disk system. what kind of AC does that require.

NES and Genesis Model 1 AC adapters will work interchangeably but SNES will not accept either adapters, they only work with their own. The plug is different.

NO! DO NOT USE AN NES ADAPTER WITH A FAMICOM!

Some info here, check it out (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36J_Ejnv2qc). Sega Master System / Genesis Model 1 adapter will do fine, they're the same thing really.

A Sega Genesis model 1 AC Adaptor does the job fine it's what I use for my Famicom AV and Super Famicom. But what ever you do DO NOT use an NES AC adaptor with a Famicom or Super Famicom you will ruin your system. As far as the 3 in 1 AC adapter things go make sure it outputs DC, if it outputs DC you can probably use it.

I wonder what the deal with the top-loader is.
It seems to have the same power rating as the FC/SFC/SNES, yet the label says to use the NES-002 (the front loader) power supply.
Of course I'm not going to use my NES adapter on my FC.

For my FDS, I've been using a Radio Shack generic adapter. 9V 800mA Tip Negative.

thanks for the warning. I wonder why the NES adapter is so bad when you can use the sega genesis model 1 ac for it. they are working fine with the genesis adapter. thanks.

Now I just need to find a substitute for the famicom disk drive.

It is bad because the NES AC adaptor outputs AC when the Famicom requires DC which is what the Genesis model 1 AC adapter outputs. I dont know the voltages though.

My NES will run off a Genesis Model 1 AC adapter, but the Genesis Model 1 will not run off my NES adapter, so for at least some versions they aren't interchangeable.

This is in addition to the hullabaloo about what the Famicom will and won't fry from using.

A USA Genesis model 1 power supply can be used with a Japanese Super Famicom.

i include the 3 in 1 adapters with the famicoms i sell. so yea, it'll work.

Again, plain and simple, a stock NES AC adapter outputs AC, then it's regulated to DC inside the NES.

The Famicom doesn't regulate AC/DC at the system, nor does the Super Famicom, FDS, etc. (take a look at the video in post #3)

Other systems the adapter fits into can't do this, they are given the AC power and go boom.

Most of the 3-in-1 adapters are DC, which an NES will take fine (as long as it is within spec), since that's really what it runs on, DC power. The stock NES AC adapter is the issue here, for whatever reason Nintendo decided to use a straight AC power adapter and do the AC/DC conversion at the system.
