phaedrus5001 writes "Ars has a story about a first person shooter under development that involves no shooting on the part of the player; at least, no shooting bullets. The game, Warco, has the player in the role of a war correspondent. The object is to immerse yourself in missions and firefights in order to document what happens. From the article: 'Players will experience the process of filming conflicts, going into dangerous situations armed with nothing but a camera. They will then edit the footage into a compelling news story.' While it's an interesting and different concept, it should be even more interesting to see if the developers can actually convince a publisher to release the project."http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png (http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fgames.slashdot.org%2Fsto ry%2F11%2F09%2F22%2F0748202%2FAn-FPS-Minus-the-Shooting%3Futm_source%3Dslashdot%26utm_medium%3Dfa cebook) http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png (http://twitter.com/home?status=An+FPS+Minus+the+Shooting%3A+http%3A%2 F%2Fbit.ly%2Fpjfjlu)

When I first heard about this game concept I thought it had a lot of potential to really be an engaging look at the human cost of war which would counter nearly every game on the market that goes for the "war is hell buddies....OHHH look a new GUN!" feel that every other FPS game has on the market.
And then I saw the trailer.
I realize its supposed to be a prof of concept trailer but the graphics and animations all make me think of a shovelware wii title. I really think a title like this needs to be as realistic as possible if they want any emotional investment from the player and that simply not the vibe I got from this trailer. Hopefully they find a publisher and do a massive amount of refining, then I think they could have a great game on their hands.

... but it's been done already.
There's some ArmA matches that include a reporter and a cameraman, and they make videos about the in-game conflicts. There's several videos on Youtube.
Hell, the ArmA team should just make that a game mode.

When I'm told that it's going to be a FPS with no shooting using a gun, one other game already comes to mind.

These guys are trying to profit off it. So like other developers have done in the past, it's an attempt to make you think something like this hasn't ever been done before.

I thought of Mirror's Edge. I can't watch the video you linked because I'm at work, but assuming that's what you linked.

Was it the focus of the game though? My understanding was that Arma was pretty high on the list of heavily realistic shooters.
I said nothing about the concept behind a FPS not shooting people new, but the concept behind portraying war in this manner as a video game is and that why I find it interesting. I just think what they have shown so far looks generic and will probably fail if they continue with the direction shown. lol

Nah, it's not the focus of the game. But it was an interesting idea by the players - the devs didn't plan on people doing it.
My comment was more "It's not a new idea", I wasn't trying to dispute your point, s'all. :)

The game Michigan is great for this. You play a cameraman following around a reporter, you get extra points for pantyshots, your only weapons are like pushing yourself into things, and if your reporter gets killed you just get a new girl in the next stage. It takes place during some sort of survival-horror type monster infestation.

I'd rather shoot people but I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. I haven't watched the trailer yet.

Seems interesting to me. My biggest issue, honestly, is that I'm pretty sick of conflicts in the Middle East, to the point I'm burned out on it...and I don't even play modern FPS.
