Metal Man stage music from Mega Man 2 resembles a sped up version of the song We are One in the Spirit.

Wow this thread is old!!!
Well I happened across this video on YouTube and indeed it seems that thunderforce 4 intro sounds very similar to Dokken : lightning strikes again.

Pretty sure that one's a coincidence. I have a buddy of mine, Jay, that used to listen to too much Dokken and pretty much every hair band that sucked, ever. If you're a Dokken fan, I apologize. See, the thing is, there were a lot of bands that had that almost exact same riff in every song. That riff style is quintessetially 80s. My friends used to rag on Jay all the time because every time he "wrote" a new guitar riff, it sounded exactly like that Dokken and TF4 riff. We'd laugh our assess off because it was it literally sounded like the same riff every time. This was in the mid 90s. Now granted, we were all metalheads, but even us metalheads knew that waaaay too much 80s music was absolute shit, but Jay loved all of it. The worse, the better. There is a large group of us that used to hang with Jay and every time we heard a cliched-sounding 80s riff, we'd call it Jay Music, or a Jay riff.
The earliest example I know of of a riff like that is in a Black Sabbath song off of 1975's Sabotage (My favorite album ever by them). Scan to 3:23:

A slower version of that riff, for sure, but the same pattern.

I thought Jennifer Lopez did the Kingdom Hearts theme for years.

Which riffs from this part of ELP's Karn Evil 9 ("Second Impression") were lifted for the Metroid ending theme? I can understand the "St. Thomas" lick that Dr. Mario's "Chill" had later used, though.

Has anyone noticed on the NES TaleSpin that the player miss jingle (associated with an animated sprite of Baloo crying) is the last five notes of the Mickey Mouse Club theme song (y'know, "M-O-U-S-E!")? It is not too much of a coincidence as Disney owns both series.

I believe the composer of Double Dragon II has openly acknowledged borrowing from "Easy Lover" by Phil Collins:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnDYattQH3Y
(Even more obvious on the official DD2 Arranged Soundtrack: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAtVCeTGWAE&list=PL0534F5D2ADEEB7DD)
Also, I don't think it sounds like any one specific track necessarily, but I've always felt that "One of Our Submarines" by Thomas Dolby is tonally very similar to Mega Man X4/X5:

The opening of Ken Masters' theme from Street Fighter II is similar to the opening bars of Cheap Trick's song "Mighty Wings".

Speaking of the "Dolphin Park" theme from Wave Race 64 sounding a lot like the theme song from Mary Tyler Moore ("Love is All Around"), then, that also means it sounds like Electric Light Orchestra's "Last Train to London" (the part that goes: "But I really want tonight to last forever/I really wanna be with you/Let the music play on down the line tonight").
Can anyone think of any VG music (other than in the NES Ghostbusters game) that sounds like these songs:
"Soul Finger" - The Bar-Kays
"Pop Muzik" - M
"I Want a New Drug" - Huey Lewis & the News
"Theme from Ghostbusters" - Ray Parker, Jr.

Seriously listen to the theme and you'll here the distinct melody of "Moon Patrol"

It's a basic 12-bar blues like you hear in songs like "Roll Over Beethoven" and "Johnny B. Goode."

Anyone recognize the opening to this track (Sonic 3D Blast - Rusty Ruin 1)?

I'm pretty sure I've heard it in a non-Sega NES game before, but can't put my finger on it.

Not strictly a case of game music resembling older stuff, but vice-versa: the beginning of Everclear's "Everything to Everyone" clearly sampled the screen boot sound from the Atari 2600 port of Pac-Man (in addition to a Nirvana-style guitar riff elsewhere in the number).

This is the music for the opening menus of a Monopoly-type game for the Super Famicom called Tower Dream.
I think it sounds like Billie Jean.

Yes, it has a rhythm like "Billie Jean", and the melody is just "Bad"'s bassline sped up a bit.

Wolfgang Krauser's theme in Fatal Fury 2. Fatal Fury Special and The King of Fighters 96 is based on Mozart's Requiem.

I'll jump in to say this:
The recurring level theme from Ironsword: Wizards & Warriors II... as would be playing during the second part of the Wind stage, the first part of the Water stage, the first part of the Fire stage, the second part of the Earth stage, and the first part of the final stage... over a pulsating bassline, in come notes that bring to mind the intro to The Police's "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" which is topped off with the same motif of four ascending higher-pitched notes you also hear in the melody heard in the first part of the Wind and Earth stages.

I want to point out that the BGM for the Donkey Kong ramps stage (25m) also sounds like the 1957 song "Lonesome Tears in My Eyes" by The Rock & Roll Trio. Why? Because someone pointed out the comparison of the melody of this BGM and The Beatles' 1969 "The Ballad of John and Yoko" and that Beatles song sounds similar to "Lonesome Tears in My Eyes."
You can also add the end title theme from Rad Racer to this list of comparisons.

Has anyone heard the similarity of the bassline in the above song, and then comparing it to the bassline in the choruses of this tune?

Super Adventure Island has one track that sounds almost exactly like a Soul II Soul beat....
You know the level when you are swimming inside the whale ?

Off the top of my head, I'm not sure which specific Soul II Soul song it is, but there is definitely a similarity here...

I'll definitely talk about this on a future episode of RetroBlast when I get to Super Adventure Island...
