Save Feature on XBox Game Not Working

I have a problem with a game NCAA March Madness 06 (Basketball) for XBox.
For whatever reasons it does not save games. The option is grayed out. Unless games are saved, other features are not available
and it states that. Any help would be appreciated as I am not very good with the XBox system, hardly played it before...thanks in advance...

My guess is that I need a memory card for this game. I just noticed on the back of the case, under "Supported Features", it says Memory Unit 765 Blocks, so perhaps this is too much to save without one? I have the original XBox I am trying it on, but don't have a memory card for this system...

Are you in a game that can be saved or are you just on the main menu?

Don't worry about the memory card, that is an optional feature that some games have so you can take your saved games to friend's houses.
