View Full Version : Series' you own several installments of that you've NEVER PLAYED?

What are some series' that you've amassed several installments and have yet to play ANY of them? I have a tendency to purchase each game in a series if I've fond of any single installment, but then there are some games that I've never actually gotten around to playing any of, but own, and based on the fact that the original I purchased seemed appealing, have purchased other installments in good faith.
The 'Where's the Disgaea 4 love' thread in Modern Gaming got me thinking about this. I own Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories, and Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice, but I've never played any of them. I purchased them all for less than $20 each, so I'm not out much, but there's actually a chance that I may hate the series after investing somewhat heavily into it (relatively).
There are several popular series' that I've never even tried, but own quite a few (if not all) installments of. Especially last generation. Just a few others are:
Ace Combat 3, AC04: Shattered Skies, AC5: The Unsung War
Atelier Iris, AI2: The Azorth of Destiny, AI3: Grand Phantasm
Colony Wars, Colony War: Vengence, CW III: Red Sun
Tecmo's Deception, Kagero: Deception 2, Deception III, Trapt
Dynasty Warriors 2, DW3, DW4, DW5: Empires
God of War, GoW II, GoW: Chains of Olympus
Grand Theft Auto, London, 2, III, Vice City, Liberty City Stories
Hitman Trilogy
Jak and Daxter, Jak 2, Jak 3
Kessen, II, III
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, PoP: Warrior Within, Pop: The Two Thrones, PoP (360), PoP: The Forgotten Sands, PoP: The Fallen King
Ratchet and Clank, Ratchet Deadlocked, R&C: Going Commando, R&C: Up Your Arsenal
Road Rash, II, III
SMT: Persona, SMT: FES Persona 3, SMT: Devil Summoner, SMT: Devil Summoner 2, SMT: Nocturne
Sly Cooper and the Thievious Raccoonous, SC2: Band of Thieves, SC3: Honor Among Thieves
Splinter Cell, SC: Chaos Theory, SC: Pandora Tomorrow, SC: Double Agent, SC: Essentials
Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage, Year of the Dragon
Suikoden, III, IV, V, Tactics
Tomb Raider, II, III, TR: Chronicles, TR: The Angel of Darkness, TR: Underworld
Trauma Center: Under the Knife, TC: Second Opinion, Trauma Team
I won't bother listing any of the unplayed ones I have only 2 installments of (which isn't quite as bad, really). Anyone else here in the same position?
In truth, I've played less than an hour of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Grand Theft Auto III and Splinter Cell, but I barely think that counts. I own all of the Devil May Cry games as well, but I've played about half of the original, so I consider myself somewhat versed in that series.

You should feel ashamed for not having played Sly Cooper. Oh, and God of War isn't that bad.
Only series that applies for me is Onimusha. Just haven't sat down with any of them yet.

I buy a lot of compilations, so I have a lot of franchise games I've never played:
Wizardry after part II
Might and Magic after part III
pretty much every AD&D game on the PC
Half the games on the Capcom Classics Collections. I have the entire Ghost n' Goblins trilogy but never played past level one in any of 'em.
About the only franchise I've actually been good about are R-Type, Mario, Sonic and Zelda--every game in those I have I've played a fair bit, if not extensively.

Most series? Of the ones I've bought, at least. Star Ocean is probably the only series of a significant size (5 games, in its case) where I can say I've beaten every single one. Not surprisingly, it's my favorite series. Although even there I've yet to bother to play through the Director's Cut version of SO3 or the PSP version of SO2. I also haven't played SO3 or the remake of SO1 in English (played the imports before they were localized). So I even kind of fail with my own favorite series, haha.

Only series that applies for me is Onimusha. Just haven't sat down with any of them yet.I love Onimusha 1 and 2. 3 Demon Seige was disappointing, and I only played a few hours of Dawn of Dreams, but I didn't exactly love it. I didn't hate it either. I've ended Samurai's Destiny more than any game last generation (besides racers and shooters like Rez).
Dead Space / Dead Space 2Man, Dead Space is fantastic; you need to fire that bitch up. The game scared the hell out of me. I didn't get desensitized until about 3/4 the way through.

Crash Bandicoot just got X's off my list this week as I beat 2, Warped and CTR all in one day.
Remaining untouched series include
Spyro the Dragon (only played demos)
Tomb Raider (only played demos)
Zelda - anything newer than Majora's mask besides the remakes
Dragon Warrior - DW III and on are all going to be new to me
Suikoden IV and on
Halo - all games
007 games besides the N64 ones
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 and on
Disgaea - all games
Pac-Man World - everything after the 1st one
Phantasy Star - whole series pretty much. just messed around in I
Final Fantasy - haven't messed with any of them after X besides the remakes
Harvest Moon - I've received a few games but never played any of them.

One in particular actually is the Final Fantasy series, this doesn't apply much anymore now that I've played through and beaten most of them, but I decided a few years back to collect all but XI, XIII and never cared to get XIV. I finally sat down over time and beat I, II, IV, VI and VII.
The Jak & Daxter trilogy, I just only started the first one awhiel back but never got far and kinda drifted away, I want to get back into it.
Commander Keen. I basically own the whole set.. But yet.. I never played any but the first, shame on me..
Leisure Suit Larry. Beat the first, started the second, never really got far in it and didn't touch the later ones, I plan to change that. Eventually..
The Ultima series, man I own every Ultima up to VII, both parts of VII and I own some of the spinoff titles even, but of course I only sat through and beat the first one. Barely started the second and didn't get anywhere because I had other games I wanted to play, but never came back to it. I really should fix this.

Metroid and Kirby. Own way too many versions of them across many systems and have never even played one.

Resident Evil. I have all the Gamecube ports and even the Wii version of RE4, and I have yet to play any of them. LOLThe RE series is one of my very favorites (through 4 anyways). Give yourself 10 minutes to get used to the controls, turn out the lights, and enjoy a nicely paced puzzle-heavy adventure. Outside of 4 they're all very similar, but the formula works.
For me, Final Fantasy. I've got several complilations on PS1 I haven't played, as well as several PS2 versions. X is the only one I've played through since FF III on the SNES.

Zelda for me. I have the GC N64 comp, Wii Twilight Princess, Link's Awakening (regular and DX), Minish Cap, and one of the GBC games, none of which I have played. I beat the first game and LTTP, got to the end boss on Zelda 2, and have stalled in the middle of Phantom Hourglass (I had to look up the title, for God's sake).

None off the top of my head, which is troubling to say considering my backlog...
This is one of those topics where you half want to congratulate the OP for bringing it up and with the remainder curse that their fingers should fall off... Why?
Off to look at spreadsheets for about an hour.

I actually meant when you own several installments in a series and you've never played ANY of the games in the series at all.

I own the Tecmo's Deception Triliogy, and I don't even know if the discs work. Almost the same with FF, although I have beaten the NES FF several times. But never played any of the others. Basically, if it's an RPG or a fetch-quest, I may or may not own it, but I probably haven't played it. I did give RE1 and RE2 a 2nd/3rd/4th chance again recently. I'll take the Panzer Dragoon series, carpal tunnel and all, thank you :)

I'm sure I have several other examples that I can't think of at the moment, but I own several of the Smuggler's Run titles (Tried one at a demo station at a store once and liked it) and several of the Red Faction titles (Liked what I read so I've been buying them, I just haven't gotten around to playing them).
Also have most of the Ace Combat series and have invested much time into just one of them so far (But I like what I've seen so I'm sure I'll enjoy the others in the coming years). And I own Metroid Prime 1-3 and Metroid Prime Trilogy but have only played MP1 for about 30 minutes so far. Been part of my backlog for a good 7 or 8 years now. And I own all three Rogue Squadron games and have barely played them. And both Star Wars Battlefront games with no time in either.

Probably Micro Machines. I own all the Genesis games(PAL imports) and have only toyed around with them. I would love to sit down and really dive into them. I have most of the PSOne,PS2, N64, SNES, NES, and GB versions. I like the newest PS2 game "Micro Machines V4", but it is a lot more fun playing against someone.
Considering Micro Machines on NES is in my top 10 NES games, I am surprised I haven't given the rest a better look.

I started thinking about this thread a few days ago when I heard more news about Mass Effect 3. Then I realized that I own the first two and have yet to play either. So then I started thinking about how many other game series I could say the same thing about. And for the sake of arguement we will define a game series as having two or more games. So here's a list of the series I own but have never played:
Mass Effect : 1 and 2(360)
Splinter Cell: SC, Pandora Tomorrow, Chaos Theory, Double Agent(all Xbox), Conviction(360)
God of War: I and II(PS2), III, Collection, Origin Collection(all PS3)
Killzone: 1(PS2) and 2(PS3)
Resident Evil : 2, 3, Survivor(all PS1), 4, Code: Veronica X, Outbreak(all PS2), RE 2(Dreamcast) 4, 0(both Gamecube), 0(Wii)
Grand Theft Auto: III, Vice City, San Andreas(all Xbox), San Andreas, Vice City Stories, Liberty City Stories(all PS2), IV and Episodes From Liberty City(all 360)
Metroid Prime: MP, MP 2(Gamecube), Metroid Prime Trilogy(Wii)
Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening DX(Gameboy), Ocarina of Time(N64 and Gamecube versions), Majora's Mask(N64), Wind Waker(Gamecube)
There are more but I think thats enough for now. And for the record, I have played Nes Zelda games but nothing from the Snes to today's versions. I also played Resident Evil Survivor but thats one out of 10 games so I cheated alittle and added it.
I've actually played demos for alot of those games but just haven't gotten around to playing the full versions yet. But I didn't pay full retail for any of those games so I can atleast take some comfort in that(otherwise I would have wasted a ton of money). And I'm also getting better. I will absolutely not purchase Mass Effect 3 when it comes out until I atleast start playing thru the first game.....or find a good sale on it for $12 or less:)
So who else on DP is suffering thru a similiar predicament where they buy so may games that before you know it you have amassed an entire series(or a good part of it) and realize you have yet to play any of them?

I was about to post in this thread, but then I was like. Didn't someone make a thread about this recently? I had to go 13 pages in but I found it. Just had "played" to be found and it was pretty quick. Although yours is a little different speaking of entire series, but close enough to being the same question.

Back to subject at hand.
God Of War (own them all, all are still sealed)
Ace Combat (Own almost all of them across the board, (PS/PS2/PSP/360) none touched)
Fable (own all, all still sealed)
Mass Effect (own all, all still sealed)
I'm sure there are bunches of other series as well.

Xenosaga and .hack RPGs. Someday I'll get around to playing them. I tend to buy any JRPG I come across yet I've not actually played that many from the PS2 era to now.
Last month I could say the Legend of Heroes series, but I recently started in on Trails in the Sky.

I will second this...Might and Magic's III to VII were all special to me; great games!
As far as series I have but haven't played:
- Grandia - I own 2 & 3; but have only ever played like 2 hours of the second one.
- Dark Cloud - own both, never touched.
- Resident Evil (doesn't really count but I consider it a big deal) - I have played this series, beating 1, 4, 5, 0, and Veronica X. But I haven't touched 2 or 3 which I own.
that's really about it, my goal lately has been to collect games I know I will play as opposed to collecting games for them to sit for long periods of time. I have also eliminated this by thinning down my collection quite a bit (by over a third in the last couple months).

Zelda, metroid and Final Fantasy games, just played some of them very briefly, lost interest and never played them again, the older ones I find really hard to play I think you had to be there at the time it came out to fully appreciate them, never finished any of the games, maybe 20% or 30% in a few of them, others turned on tried to like put it off too long, now I'll probably never play them. *shrugs*

I have several.
God Of War: 1 is partially played, 2 is sealed, 3 is open, unplayed.
Sly Cooper: 1 is open, unplayed, 2 is sealed, 3 is open, unplayed.
Metal Gear Solid: 1 is beaten, 2 unplayed, 3 unplayed, 4 sealed and unplayed, Peace Walker sealed.
All Assassin's Creeds except Revelations sealed and unplayed.
Fuck, I am slow and behind.
There are probably others but I can't think right now. Vodka clouding mind.
