There are actually a number of good Mac exclusive games, although admittedly, they are from the late 80s and early 90s.

Anyone remembers the time around the later newtons? Oh boy, i never thought they are going to make it through the winter. Yes, they did some pretty sweet stuff, but you can't deny how many moronic decisions they made. The story continues today, but apparently being shiny justifies everything. Remember: You can install anything on your mac, like windows, linux, or what ever flavor of bsd catches your fancy.

Not sure about newer macs running older games without some kind of emulation. This is why I keep my iMac G3 CRT. For the nostalgia and it can dual boot OS9 and OSX 10.4. I do admit bloated sites are a pain, easily fixed by disabling Javascript. But its nice to be able to play some Mac game classics such as Myst Exile, Jazz Jackrabbit, Lemmings and even Spetre VR. :)

@ geezuzkhrist119 - Look for Acid Arena, there is a Mac OSX patch for it.

If your Mac is running OSX 10.7, forget it. Apple no longer includes or support Rosetta, the PPC interpreter, so you can't run older software as easily anymore.

There were a lot of games available for the Mac, although half the time the Mac ports were never promoted. For example, there was a cool little three-dimensional mahjongg game that had been developed in the late '90s, but they couldn't find a publisher. Global Star decided to pick it up, but they refused to put out a Mac-only game and made them do a PC port and rename it Nahan. A couple years after I played a promo demo off a MacFormat cover CD, I saw it once in a store and grabbed it. I've never seen it again, and nobody remembers it. Good game, but no effort was put into letting anyone know it was Mac compatible. It had a brief run in the discount bins Global Star games usually sit in, then vanished. This has happened a few times, sadly.

Future Cop: LAPD was published by Electronic Arts for the PS1 and PC. One of the developers of the PC version was a big Mac guy, and they were using Macs for development (that was common around that time - Carmageddon had its engine programmed on the Mac and had the code ported over to the PC, then they eventually decided to finish the Mac code and publish it a year or two later) so in his off hours he developed the Mac game engine and talked EA into publishing it as a dual format CD. There was something to the effect that if all the Mac people sent in their registration forms and let EA know there was an audience for Mac games, they'd publish more for it. That never worked out.

There is something called SheepShaver that will allow you to run OS 9 on the intel Macs. I got it but haven't sat down to play with it.

As for Lion, I guess you'll have to wait until somebody figures out a solution for it. I'm sure it will happen soon.

You could run Classic (OS 9) through 10.6 naturally, no need for another program for Intel Macs. That's what Rosetta was. http://www.macrumors.com/2011/06/13/os-x-lion-to-drop-rosetta-support-for-powerpc-applications/

As Kitusne said, the removal of Rosetta has killed that. Apple dropped it and there isn't a way for it to come back in Lion. No solution is going to spring up.

Honestly, being a Apple user (started w/ a ][ GS waaaay back in the day) from computer one on pushed me to console gaming by the time I was really old enough to care. The lack of DOOM for the Mac when it was out for the 32X is what pushed me that direction, and I never looked back.

You started this in the Modern Gaming section, so I assume you aren't really looking for anything specific. You could just hit Amazon and keep sorting until you've gotten down to the Mac games. Here they are:

EDIT: All I said was Am/\zon and it URL'd it. I didn't URL that word. I hope that's a DP referral link, otherwise:

Weird. Now that I edited the post it has removed the link.
Here is the link it had embedded in my post:

Actually i've been playing the original Leisure Suit Larry just fine the other day. DosBox for the win. Anything that is not dos usually works just fine with some tricks, fooling around with the compatibility modes usually does it, sometimes i need other options like running it as a administrator, but 90% of the games i came across over time worked just fine with those little tricks, and if there is something that just will not run googling "running game xyz on windowszyx" usually does solve the issue. :)

I play Civ V on my 3 year old iMac. It sort of sucks, but I don't want to do PC gaming aside from weaksauce Mac stuff. Civ V is a bit gimped and sort of annoying, but I don't want anything to tear me away from console gaming anyway.

I'm tempted to run Windows on the Mac and do some GOG D/ls, but then I think of all the vintage hardware I have to run the games on and I postpone playing old computer games until I get those out of storage.

I've been seeing those links on random posts quite a lot. I have no idea why.

Rosetta never supported Classic. Classic only worked on native PPC Macs, which were discontinued in 2006 and dropped after 10.5.

It's http://www.viglink.com/
I assume it's intentional. An automatic affiliate linking script.

This list is useful to know which older Mac games are functional under Rosetta and/or have a Universal Binary (necessary to run natively under Mac Intels).

http://guides.macrumors.com/Universal_Binary_Games

The list isn't complete, but it covers most of the best known Mac games. Aspyr was generally good in offering a universal installer or update.

I thought Rosetta was for earlier OS X apps that were PPC-only, not for OS 9 itself.

I run classic apps via SheepShaver (http://sheepshaver.cebix.net/). It works great.
