View Full Version : is there any "beginner's guide to Superguns" anywhere?

Hey,

I'm not too serious about arcade board collecting, but somebody on another forum has offered me an arcade PCB (of X-Multiply if you're wondering) that they're willing to hold until next February (they're not in a hurry to sell) and I ran across mention of Superguns when I was reading about how to play it.

Mainly, I want to know the basics of the Supergun--like how exactly they work (do you plug it into the PCB somehow or what?)

I'm also strongly considering building one. I have a specific design in mind, but I would like a good beginner's guide. The one at Multimods.com is the only one I've found and its broken (bad links, broken images), so any alternatives would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

There is a really good Supergun discussion thread over at the SHMUPS Forum: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=24058

I've been planning to build one, but first I need to get a job extension so I can give myself the breathing room to afford it. Not everything you need may be in that thread, but I've found it to be a good reference point.

Whenever I see someone considering a supergun, I always ask whether or not they have the facility to go one step further and get a standard arcade cabinet with a JAMMA harness. I mean, if you want to play arcade games, do it right!

This link is from the stickied post in this forum:

It's a few years old but still relevant.

Unfortunately I'm not made of space at the moment.

Not that I wouldn't like to build an arcade cabinet, but IMO to be worth it I would basically have to put a MAME computer in there.

This is the exact reason why I found a way to shove 2 cabs into my 1 bedroom apartment

I have 4 cabs in my one bedroom apartment.:p I may have to jettison one of them though.

I've been reconsidering this stance and, well, you may be right.

I need to know one thing though: If I were to make a cab, how easy is it to switch out PCBs in case I ever wind up with more than one game?

I used to own an X-Multiply board and i regret selling it,there is quite a lot of info out there on rigs and superguns and some are more complex than others but a simple one will do.I built my own using an old PC outer case and wired all the rig inside it,it is connected to a monitor using scart.
here is some info:-

If I had to put together a standard arcade cabinet (well, another, actually...I still have that damn white elephant Stratovox cocktail...) I'd have little room for anything else. There really are some advantages to the supergun route.

One of them is that I can just (in theory) cobble together whatever kind of control panel is needed. I need to look at doing something with my LS-30 for Midnight Resistance (for example).
