iONiUM writes with a CNET article outlining the next step in Microsoft's plans for cable television, which he says "seems like yet another step forward in killing traditional cable companies." From the article: "[Microsoft] announced this morning that nearly 40 television content providers — including Comcast, Verizon, and HBO in the United States — will roll out programming over Xbox Live. The company also has deals lined up with providers in the U.K., Spain, Canada, Mexico, Germany, and Italy."http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png (http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fgames.slashdot.org%2Fsto ry%2F11%2F10%2F06%2F1342246%2Fmicrosoft-to-bring-cable-tv-to-360%3Futm_source%3Dslashdot%26utm_medium%3Dfaceboo k) http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png (http://twitter.com/home?status=Microsoft+To+Bring+Cable+TV+To+360%3A+ http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2Fo7sY70)

While I was initially impressed by the number of partners, the only way this would succeed is if they charge alot less than what you would normally pay for the cable version. So for instance, if having HBO runs you $10 or so a month with regular cable then the 360 version needs to be no more than half of that. Why? Because you are already going to be getting less than what cable HBO subscribers get. And thats just one example.

I'm personally interested in the UFC partnership. I already know how much pay per views cost but they are also offering archive content from the vault. Again, this will only work if the price is cheaper than what people normally pay for it on demand. So this new service has potential to work but that all depends on how well they price everything. They will probably do a bundle package either for everything or for a certain amount of partners(I'd rather do that than have them all and end up paying for shit I don't want) but as usual price is the key.

The problem with these deals is that it's not like Microsoft is going to allow you to watch HBO ala carte. You are still going to need a satellite or cable subscription with HBO to be able to use it. The only real advantage, is that you'll be able to use your XBOX 360 as another cable receiver to watch HBO. So, if you're only paying for two receivers from Comcast or whatever, you might be able to use a Xbox 360 as a 3rd Comcast receiver, without having to pay extra on your Comcast bill.

That's all thats really going on with this. It's a shame too, because if you could really get ESPN and stuff like that totally a'la carte, that would be awesome. I'd have no problems paying $10 per month for ESPN if I don't have to also pay another $75 for another 150 channels I could care less about. (I'd only use ESPN during the NFL Season to watch Monday Night Football). Right now I either go to a friends house, or meet at a bar to watch MNF. (I don't currently have cable or satellite)
