It used to happen much more often but these days it is rare to get any factory sealed NES game traded in.

As sweet as these pictures look trust me it looks better in real life. I am thinking about VGA but the thought that something could happen while it is being shipped
(as remote as that might be) has me worried.

Dr. Mario is a dime a dozen as far as sealed games go, you would be wasting money getting it graded, looks pretty dirty and the corners are all smooshed.

It is a semi-common game to find sealed this is true but how many out there are in this condition?

How many are in beat up/sunfaded/dirty condition? It's hard to say. I'm kind of curious what type of grade it would get if it was graded.

Derp.

When I know all of the individual DPers better, assumptions will come more naturally. As it is... I've seen that DP level is not indicitive of knowledge or sensibility.

Edit: Sorry, that was NOT a slight. There's some Bell-Mouth... something like that, he came to mind.

I know, right. While it may be hard to believe, it is true. Someone did trade this game in to my store.

Now as great as this find was I did a comparison check against another sealed copy and found some differences which lead me to believe that this might be some sort of variation or prototype test run. At first I dismissed the minor differences as a possible later print run but when you look at them together as a group there is no mistake.

Now besides the minor text variations I noticed something else on the front cover. It is hard to catch at first but comparing them side by side I did notice that Mario appears to be facing the opposite direction.

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t245/WastingOrpheus/drmario/MVC-019S.jpg

From this angle the colors do look slightly off but it could be just a slight variation in the printing process. Perhaps it is just a later print run or a case where they ran out of one ink and used another in its place.

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t245/WastingOrpheus/drmario/MVC-018S.jpg

Again we can see that the colors are off a tiny bit and there is slight change in the text.

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t245/WastingOrpheus/drmario/MVC-013S.jpg

Those minor difference aside these are the two major differences that can not be ignored. This copy also appears to have some never before seen anti-counterfeiting measures in place. Here are two examples of this. As you might imagine the gradual shading on the top of the box is very hard to duplicate.

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t245/WastingOrpheus/drmario/MVC-015S.jpg

Finally we can see here that the Nintendo seal itself has a 3D effect yet uses no hologram.

Ok, I'm in. How much?

You know.. I must say that I do enjoy keeping items like this because you just never know when you will see another. The unique experience of finding something like this is so hard to assign a dollar value to and really this game does stand out from all the others in my collection.

Perhaps if you had something of a similar nature a trade could be worked out? I dunno. I'm brainstorming for ideas and not coming up with too much so I'm open for suggestions.

LOL Reminds me of that huge box of sealed and CIB NES games a long time flea market seller said he found. He told this other guy (who was a bit of a rival of mine) and myself he'd bring them out the next week and sell them for $3 each. So when next week rolled around I was at the flea market at like 4am waiting for him to drive in. As soon as he arrived we got down to business.

Sealed copies of The Legend of Zelda, StarTropics, Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, a sealed case of some AVE game, and a lot more all mildewed and moisture damaged like that Dr. Mario. I ended up buying what I could salvage (and a couple that I couldn't but felt I should be the one to bury) and leaving the rest of the moldy crap for the other guy - who bought them all. He then traded the carts back loose to him over the next month, contaminating half the seller's loose games with the putrid mold smell.

As for the games I ended up with, what was good I passed along to other board members here for well under market price. I got my sealed copy of StarTropics that I had been after although I did crack it open due to concern that it may have been damaged inside - it was fine, so I have a virgin CIB copy which is fine by me.

I think that is from the ultra rare NES Scuba Sub-set. It was a little known test run of games meant to be played underwater. That one obviously isnt still underwater, although it is hard to tell from the pictures.

There is one sure way to tell if it is from the NES Scuba Sub-set. Grab it with two hands and ring it out like a sponge. If water (or somethings even sand) comes out, you have a real gem on your hands. Of course you could always take it in your shower and see if it plays.

Either way, excellent find! I still need DR. Mario and DK Jr. Math to complete my NES Scuba Sub-set.

A long time ago I saw a factory sealed NES DR. Mario and Yoshi at a thrift shop. I bought Yoshi and I opened and gave it away. Now, I will forever respect a factory sealed game and keep it that way.

Ok, fine, I drug out some of my gems for your consideration. I have nothing sealed so unique, but I have quite a few oddballs here. Since a few of these are one-ofs, I have included a link to full documentation of every claim I make here concerning these items.
Item 1: A unique factory mistake I purchased this:

Imagine my surprise when inside was this:

It's legit, made that way, apparently. Color shifting ink too:

Next is an estate sale score from Seattle. A prototype PS1, owned by Kirk Cobain:

One-of GBA SP:

http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n629/ConneticutLeatherCompany/Picture454.jpg
MJ sued Nintendo for this one, so they pulled it. Proof it's a prototype:
http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n629/ConneticutLeatherCompany/Picture455.jpg
And finally, my prized possesion. Only for something of the magnitude of your game would this even come out of the box:

Sunnyvale light 3. And, it's been refurbished, so you know it's not just broken"

OK, for the evidence of these claims, please go see this video I made, complete with links, documentation, the DNA evidence, etc.

This looks like a job for VAG.

http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/5130/03d41vb6.jpg

VAG is determined to be the best and eventually the only (monopoly) video game grading company. We hope our professional team of graders and video game experts who will consistently grade all items on an ubiased and accurate scale will take us there.

We offer all collectors the opportunity to buy something at five times the price for the peace of mind that their game is in good condition based on our grading. Buyers also don't need to worry about the legitimacy of a factory seal or not because it's in a plastic case that will guarantee its value regardless, because most collectors won't even care or bother to pay attention.

We also offer a beatiful display bag for the protection of your games. Our patented, FDA approved, freezer grade Zip-Lock™ technology will protect your games from all environmental hazards. It features blue-shield plastic for UV light protection, double-zipper technology to lock out dangerous gases and chemical that have been known to damage games such as smug. Our bags however do not protect the games from itself, so the shrink wrap will further shrink over time and the acid in the game seal and box. This will make sure to stay contained to destroy your games as soon as possible assuring you can purchase another one from VAG in the future.

This looked like a find thread and first BuyAtari, so I thought... move to 'What's it Worth?'! Then I saw that there were people already throwing down offers on this beaut of a game, so I thought... move to 'Buy & Sell'!

Now I see that we're deep into a VAG/VGA discussion and as much as I love VAG (really, who doesn't?) I'd have to suggest VGA only because they can UV that bitch. Make sure no sun damage can ever kiss it's beautifully printed cardboard.

Make sure that when it's sent out, that you pay for rush grading, op for the digital photos and do everything in your power to make sure that this baby gets back home to you ASAP.

and JoneBone: this thread is serious business.

Yeah that's what I figured. I'll go as high as $1.2k then in raw ungraded form. I see an outstanding offer above me of $2k for graded, but with my offer you get money today and don't have to worry about being borderline silver/gold in your VGA grade.

Oh wow, the rare Nirvan-A revision. I think they only made those for about 2 months between the original Nirvan model they used for the first year and switching over to the Nirvan-B revision, which as you know lasted for approximately 5 years before Majesco bought the rights and started pumping out the Nirvan-3 model which only put out a B&W rf signal instead of the color composite of the original.

First, let me start off by saying that these past few stressful days have been a continuous roller coaster of revelations and emotions. If not for the well wishing support of my friends here (you know who you are) I am not sure that I could have seen this through.

No one on the planet lives forever and as such we are mere custodians for the museums of the future. Items may sell and change hands several times but in the end gems like this will end up in a museum for the all the world to share. We enjoy the time we have with them but the holy grails of our hobby will outlive us all.

With that being said and with a profound sadness in my heart I must announce that this gem has taken its first step along that path to greatness. It has not been an easy decision and the offers presented to me have been both varied and plentiful if not odd and bizarre. So in perhaps what has been the fifth hardest decision of my life, I've agreed to terms with another member here over the temporary ownership of this gem. Should the new owner choose not to come forward I do ask that the other members here respect his wishes and privacy at this time.

That is all.

That is bullshit. I was this first person to see this thread and immediately contacted you via a PM(and certified letter) that if you were ever going to sell this, I would like to be given a chance to buy it. I told you I would beat any offer if I was just given a chance. I even offered to drive your money out, just to complete a deal.

Now I find out via a post, not even a message or a phone call(I included all my info in my PM and letter). I am extremely saddened by this and this kinda thing is why this hobby has gone downhill in the past few years. People making backdoor deals on carts that will never be enjoyed by the masses. This is Bullshit!
