View Full Version : S-Video for PSone?

I recently purchased an S-Video cable for my SNES, and the picture comes in great on my Sony Trinitron TV. I'm looking to get the same quality video source for my PSone.

My question is, can the smaller, redesigned PSone output S-Video, or was that one of the things they stripped from the console in the redesign? I also understand that I have to purchase the official cable from Sony if I do have the option for S-Video.

Thank you.

I actually have this little PS1 breakout box that gives me S-Video. It hooks on the back of the PS1 and you connect standard S-Video and AV cables to it. My friend bought it from Japan in 1998ish.

It was the best solution I ever found and I'm sure there's some out there. Way better than an S-Video cable because I still had the flexibility.

It should. Though I don't have the redesign PSone on hand to check.

As far as I'm aware, which could be very wrong, Sony has maintained an identical composite, s-video, and 15khz RGB (SCART) pinout for each and every PS1/PS2/PS3 revisions in all territories since the launch date SCPH-1000 in 1994.

To be exact I mean between revisions of the same console.

Uh... I'm pretty sure the standard PS2 S-Video cable will work on a PS1, too.

I've had several of these over the years. I actually removed the AV Port from it and hacked it into both my Atari Jaguar and Commodore 64 so I can use more common, and superior, PS2 cables for them.

Sony re-released a slightly updated s-video cable for use with the PlayStation, PSone, and PS2. When I say "updated", I don't mean in the compatibility sense. They just changed the colour from grey to black.

I bought one new in the retail package a few years ago and of course it works fine with my PSone. Look for the SCPH-1100.

*edit* This is the one. If you want one new in retail package, it's more rare than you think

A local consignment store where I live had tons of brand new Sony PS2 s-video cables at one point. That's where I got mine

... strangely enough, I can't find a single completed auction on eBay...

Never seen one with a regular SVideo jack, only the RCA jacks on the side. These are designed for the Guncon to plug near the console instead of the back of the TV. I have the grey model and found a great alternate use for it. The RCA jacks go to a portable game screen LCD and I can still maintain a Component 480p connection to the HD at the same time!

Mine was a first party adapter but was from japan. I'll try to dig it up.

There seems to be one out there specifically by Namco for the Guncon. Neat.

The official S-Video cable is as already mentioned the SCPH-1100. The RCA 3-jack AV Adaptor is SCPH-1160 and it seems Europe got the grey variant of that. All the same, it seems like a good thing to have, Guncon-wise.

Nah, a third party S-Video cable works just as well. I use the same third party S-video cables for my PSX, PSOne, PS2, PSTwo, and PS3 Slim.

Actually I have several, but all work with all of Sony's systems (not PSP, though). One's just for Sony, but has a little composite jack on it for use with a Guncon (useless to me since 1, never owned a Guncon and 2, my PSX I used this cable with already had composite jacks anyway.) Another one I have works with Sony systems, Nintendo systems from SNES to GC, and Xbox. Another works with Sony systems, Wii, and 360.

All of these work with any Sony system I've tried them on.

Sony did a GREAT job. They don't get enough credit. One of the most consistently supported supported custom jacks ever.

You don't have to worry about things users of other consoles do like whether your model system has s-video and/or RGB. Or needing a different RGB cable between NTSC and PAL.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I ended up settling on this one from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-2-S-Video-Cable/dp/B00002STOB), although this (http://www.gamechoiceclub.com/image/ps3_scale_hori.gif) is the actual cable.

The cabling is very thick and well made. The connections are gold-plated (I don't know how gold it really is). And I don't know if it's just my ears, but the audio coming out of the TV sounds more crystal clear with a higher treble and a softer bass. The text and colors are obviously more vibrant, sharper, and more colorful with less color-bleeding. It was kind of a tight fit into my PSone. The connection "clicked" in, whereas the original composite cable did not.

Sony did a good job on this one!

That picture is the PS3 redesign. Sony gave at least their composite, component, and s-video cables (I don't know about SCART or others) a style makeover. Of course it was mainly marketing. Serves in theory little real function if any, then again in that sense no-name generic ones with proper build quality are no different either.
