AGS-001 GBA SP power on problem

so its been a long time since i have been here, lifes been busy, got married but my collection has grown and pleased to say i got a vectrix, a system i never thought i would find, for $5 with 2 games about 2 months ago but this post is about something else, i'll ask about it later.

i have a GBA SP AGS-001 (older kind less bring screen) and the thing wont come on.

before you ask though the orange light is staying on when pluged in and i tested the battery and despite its bulgyness its got a 3.9v charge.

when i slide the switch the green light pops on and off every time, i did get the display to come on once and it seemed fine so i dont know whats going on

Try running it from the wall adapter with the battery removed?

By 'screen not coming on' do you mean the lcd or the backlight? On my ags-001 even without a cartridge in I can turn it on and the backlight shines (lcd is obviously off).

Isn't a GBA SP supposed to show the Game Boy logo without a cartridge, not turn off the lcd?

it requires a battery to be in for it to do any thing other wise when i have it plugged into the wall and turn it on i dont even get the green light to flicker on and off at all.

and its not a display thing its just not powering up i just mensioned that i got the GBA logo once for a split seccond before it went off one time so the display is working its just being funky and when i turn it on the green light flicks on and off and nothing happens

seems GBA SP and GC items are commanding an increasing price lately so if i can fix it that would be much better than waiting for a thrift/yard sale to drop one.

Fuse at F1: Top left of the main pcb, not the contoller pcb.

that looks nothing like the AGS-001 GBA SP board

how ever if the fuse is just labled F1 i should be able to find it any way right?

edit:
i found F1 and F2 they both have small ammounts of resistance instead of the multimeter just showing 1 like theres no connection, regardless i tried bridging them and it still does it

any other thoughts?
could a component on the LCD side of things gone bad and the main board is kicking off because its no getting a response from the display? i have seen it happen with TV's, the LCD goes bad and the whole system in the tv will lock up, sound goes all wacky and everything

Double post I know but edit isn't working on my phone.


I got 2 sp's from a pawn shop. They wanted $15 go one and $10 for the other but I got them both for $20. one has a similar problem and it seems to be the power switch. Any one know where to get one?
Going to see if there is any thing I can do to make the existing usable but I don't have high hopes


One is a 001 and the other is a 101. The 101 is the one this time that has the problem

I'd check eBay first. Probably an equivalent part on Digi-Key but you'd need the measurements.

Psst... I think that's the PCB for an original GBA, not an SP.

i tested the battery and despite its bulgyness its got a 3.9v charge.

If you are saying that the battery is bulging from its normal shape, that is a serious issue. Replacing the battery would be first on my list of things to do.

i thought so as well because i have seen less swollen batteries not hold any sort of a charge before but this one holds a charge and is able to run a system for a long ammount of time (doesent die in a minute type of thing)

with the other 2 i got (the AGS 101 and 001 w/o sound) one had a similar battery and a similar bulge so i am thinking its just how these piticular batteries are. the 3rd battery i got is a cheepo 3rd party chinese knock off with a label made to look like an official one and its not so good. the officials are whtie wrapped batteries with black ends and the knock off is a blue plastic enclosed one like on ebay

i managed to make the AGS-101 switch less sensitive by pressing really hard on the actual housing of the switch so it will stay on if bumped or jiggled. my 001's are in kind of poor shape though one with no sound one one with the supposed switch problem. would like to get all of them going, they look like hell but would make good starting points for custom GBAs.

i think because the 101 is in such poor looking shape (really scratched up most of the paint is gone) i am going to spray it with truck bed liner. i hope i can get the screen scratches out with the plastX i have.

any way any other ideas are welcome i still want to fix these things.

and if i tear one up i'll be sure to upload pics of the revisions and also if i spray one a different color

Wait, the blue batteries are knockoffs? My brand new SP from back in the day had a blue one in it.

Sounds like the solder joints have become cracked from repeated motion to the switch, reflow them and test again.

alot of replacments i have found have been in a light blue plastic casing, but i guess the 101's came with a darker blue plastic battery after further researching them.

i've not had a computer for about a week since one of the outlets in my house decided to go bad so i am catching up

I have seen both batteries although the blue ones are far rarer. I think the blue ones were the used in the launch units.
