View Full Version : Gameboys without glass - WTF?

I'm always crawling through eBay for GameBoys, and one thing managed to catch my attention:
There are massive amounts of GameBoys (mostly classic and pocket) that miss their glass in front of the screen. Why does that happen? It feels like sharks: Cut off the desired bit and thrown the rest still living but doomed to die back into the eBay ocean. Why would anyone remove the glass? It basically ruins it. :|

People did it because the screen got so hammered it was too hard to see. So yank the screen, and now you can see again. Almost always, this is why.

Also, from personal experience, the screen has a tendency to come off on its own. Both of my originally owned GameBoys lost their screen. Just came off, glue and all.

If it's not ware, it's because the glue has finally become so brittle there's no adhesive left to it. I found my old gameboy (brick) a few years ago, and I simply picked it up and the plastic fell off. My unit was babied from the day I had it.

Oh my...
My original GB which i owned as a child sits right in front of me, i took it everywhere, dropped it countless times and even threw it, it went everywhere with me, and i have to say i find that hard to believe. My GB looks like it went through hell and back and bits and pieces start malfunctioning one by one now, but for not being able to see through the glass you would have to destroy it.

Yes actually i'm pretty surprised by your answer.

€dit: Well that also explains why i'm equally stumped about the falling off bit. I half expected people "harvest them" and sell the rests again to maximize profit or something, or i wouldn't have posted. I'm still quite surprised really.

Oh man, you're in for a fun ride in this hobby. Things get old, they wear down and break down. Glue gets brittle (GB screen covers fall off), lubricants dry out (CD assembly carriages and gears), electrolytic capacitors dry out (sound issues on a myriad of systems / failure in arcade monitors). This stuff is old and wasn't designed to last forever. My original GameBoy is fine as well, however specific production runs, atmospheric conditions where the system was stored / used, manufacturing differences - this is why Your Mileage May Vary.

Those screens are plastic, not glass.

I'm saying that you make as much sense as something translated with Babblefish.

You can get repro replacement screen plastics brand new for less than $5 on eBay.

Example:

No you didn't say that, that's why i had to ask. Your comment didn't make much sense either. If you like to criticize do it in a constructive manner, acting like a cunt never solved anything. :)

BAM! C-Bomb! I'll admit, the writing is different. But I've never had a hard time reading it. That said, he takes it a little personally, that's fo rsure.

I said it with a smile. :)
Most people don't have issues with my English, and it's very rare that people tell me that they didn't understand what i was saying, most people then just ask me to explain what i've meant to say, and that's fine with me, but even rarer is a response as rude as Exit's, that's why i reacted the way i did, which isn't exactly nice either, i'm aware of that, sorry if i disturbed the peace of the forum, but i don't like getting trolled.

I'm actually looking for an old first model GameBoy for parts, if anyone has one or sees one for sale. It doesn't need to be in working order in the least.

In fact, all I really need are the buttons; the dpad, the B and A and the Start/Select.

That sentence was so long that it just made William Faulker spin in his grave.

I never bothered installing the glass on my rebuilt gbc.
The screen is much easier to see without the glass.

I had to laugh at this. Also, Henry James would like to duel! Either way this thread was a little popcorn worthy. I can understand what the fella is trying to say with little effort myself, so I think it's being a bit blown out of proportion.

A bit blown, or blown a bit? Ludwig likes commas, and dislikes periods. That is all.
