View Full Version : XBOX 360 mod Microsoft wants hidden
Sunnyvale

Well, as we all know, the 360 seems like it stole portions of it's design from Bic. I hate working on mine. I hate cracking the housing, watching a plastic tab fly off, cleaning the same surfaces I did last month, tightening the same screws I did last month...
I just want to play L4D.
So, in that glorious moment between sleep and awake, I came up with the mod the Microsoft HAS to be aware of, but never implemented. So as I drank my morning coffee I drew up a schematic. The schematic's a little rough; If I get enough requests, I'll re-work it and post it so all can benefit from this.
Now keep in mind that I did not go to ITT or anything like that. I am self trained, and have used to internet for most of my repairs, at least to garner a schematic and usually the most likely sources of problems. I'm a repairman in those regards, not an engineer. So if it looks a little rough, please be kind. I worked hard on this, and I didn't have to share!
After implementing this mod, you will find that even after 12 hours of gameplay, your 360 is more or less the same temperature as the surounding air. You'll see it requires next to no ventilation, eliminating any need for aftermarket fans or worries about which vents are covered. You'll even start watching DVD's on it again!
Any helpful suggestions as to how I could improve this would be greatly appreciated. And if you need any instruction on doing this yourself, just PM me, but please keep in mind I expect a big response, so I will be posting all PM's regarding this on this thread as to keep other gamers informed. OK, here's the preliminary pics, more to come...

Best of luck with that.

Didn't I say in the OP to be I'm no engineer? Just because it looks unsafe doesn't mean I'll die in a fire! Sheesh!

My 360 will be working eons after both of yours die. Who'll be laughing then?

Hey, Henry Ford just wrapped a rubber band around a couple of casters, and invented the assembly line. Not saying I'm Henry Ford, but in the video game world...

I'll be laughing the next time you boot your frozen Xbox. You will find that the mechanical parts do not like operating at subfreezing temperatures. If your lucky, the disc drive and hard disk will not spin up. If your not so lucky , they will spin up and make a terrible noise as the bearings get torn up because the oil is too thick. You may also find that the hard disk platters have contracted enough to cause alignment issues with the heads. Also, lets not forget about the danger of a short cased by dew/frost. Your Xbox is not long for this world.

Despite your tone, I did ask for constructive criticism...
OK, I'm gonna go steal the heat tape off my water pipes and wrap the DVD drive in it! Then I'm gonna wrap it all in that freezer wrap that'l let it breathe but protect it from the frost! THANKS!!!
And I don't need to boot it anymore. I don't turn it off. It's like my old 2600. Let her run for a week, no problem.

There was some kid who got electrocuted trying to keep his system cool with a container of water, not all mods end with death by fire.

OK, despite the sarcastic attitudes from you guys (who probably don't own a single gamebit!), I am hearing something about fire. Fine, fine. I grabbed 3 Sega CD heat shields, and put them under the console proper.
I pulled some asbestos fibers out of an old radio I have, and I'm going to use those as well. They're a little dusty (ok, real dusty), but this isn't about looks, it's about being able to kill zombies on a whim!
Hey, I use to work for Hospira!! Until they sold the critical care division I work at to ICU Medical.
AWESOME!!! Do you have any more of those Hospira housings I used? I'd like to mass produce these, and sellsellsell! Already ordered one of these:

I think the Sunnyvale420 and skaar need to get their heads together and fix one of these bad boys up together. Just think about it, a xbox in a freezer with a fan resting on it! That thing would work FOREVER!!! And you would save a bundle on air conditioning in the summer. Your heat bill might go up a little, but you can cover for that because you wont need to keep spending 40$ ever other week on a new xbox. This is genius!

What's funny is that, if you really think about it, "put it in the freezer" isn't any worse than all the other clownshit remedies people have used in the past to fix their broken games, some more successful than others.

I think someone is farming for meseta.
You might be saving that 40 bucks on buying another 360 for weed, but you're going to be burning more electricity to keep it in your cryo chamber. I'm also sorry that you feel that your day isn't complete w/o playing L4D. A crap shooter is crap.
This totally doesn't deserve to be hidden in OT. I WANT THE WHOLE OF INTERNETS TO SEE THIS.

Never have been able to discern WTF to do with meseta... besides send PM's I guess. I hear tell of pretty lights and name changes, but I have only 'bank yer meseta' or 'take a loan' links in my CP.
You're point about my power bill stands; I'll add a piece of insulation-covered plywood in the hole. Thanks!
As for calling L4D crap, listen, buddy, moderator or no, them's fightin words! :vamp:
And thanks for the bump to modern gaming. It's nice to see my work is being appreciated.

What about mineral water cooling? PC guys have been doing it for ages. Pure water does not conduct electricity, the contaminates in the water do. If you could get absolutly pure water, you technically COULD submerge your XBOX in it. Also, ever consider water cooling PC setup for it?

Mineral water is anything but pure water.
In any case, pure water would only stay pure for a little while. It wouldn't be long before it became contaminated with impurities such as dust and metals. If you are going to submerge electronics in liquid, you are better off using mineral oil. http://www.pugetsystems.com/submerged.php

So the 360 guys have to make a decision between their console burning down and their house burning up?
Dunno what's funnier... this or the fact that its tolerated. Buy another one? And we wonder where all the money went.
I wonder if the "720" will require a dewer of liquid N2 to avoid a kiloton explosion.

Isn't the problem with overheating that the board starts to warp and eventually the solder joints get loose from the flexing between hot and cold? What if you just don't let it cool down? Keep it in the oven instead.
