Yet another reboot of the Spyro franchise has come out, at least in name. Spyro looks nothing like the Spyro of Insomniac, nor of his other reboot. There is a lot less emphasis on him, and more emphasis on other characters.

Commercial here. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONOPELFanWo)

Of course the big gimmick is the scanner, and it falls into a trap of many games of its kind: characters that may be required or recommended to beat the game must be purchased and scanned in. I believe the figurines can be used between all systems, but I don't know about the scanner and I don't think they sell the game by itself.

I think to get all of the possible characters, it's like $300. There are more to come, apparently. Has anyone tried this new reboot? I saw a demo of the scanner and was decently impressed, and a bundle is only $10 more than a regular 360/PS3 game.

It looks kind of cool, but it's pretty expensive if you're the kind of collector going for all the pieces. I guess they made it like a trading card game in a way, to take your money a little at a time.

So, essentially it's DLC in physical form then...

I remember reading that there were some rabid Spyro fans that demanded this game not be released.

Idiots.

To be fair, it's barely a Spyro game, and I doubt Insomniac would do anything better with the franchise since they see it as played out. I think they actually mentioned that they dropped Spyro because he couldn't hold a gun.

Kind of sad, really. The first three Spyros are some of my favorite games. I never could get into Ratchet and Clank, maybe it's time for another go at it?

I think they sent death threats to the developer.

I realize that Spyro's basically tacked on, but still.

Seriously? How rabid is the Spyro fanbase when it makes the Sonic fanbase seem level headed? They did make Spyro look stupid and nothing even close to what he was originally, maybe that is what got them riled up?

I'm curious what they are going to do with the rest of the series, the game is doing rather well. I wonder if they will even bother putting Spyro in the next one as he wasn't the main focus in this one, and he was probably only used because of his name.

Apparently the game was going to be an M-rated reboot of the series with blood and a much darker atmosphere, but they decided that it wasn't in the spirit of the series. Wonder what the fans would have thought about that...

The Spyro fanbase is WEIRD. I discovered this when I played the first Spyro for the first time less than a year ago. You'd think that the fanbase would just be your typical 3D platformer fans, but they're more like a bizarre subset of the furry community. And contrary to what the rest of the gaming world thinks, they seem to often prefer the modern games because Spyro got more mature, with a deeper, more dramatic plot, and they added in crap like love interests.

Part of the reason I never got into the series past the PS1 was because they kept adding stupid things the series didn't need, like Spyro blowing lightning and bubbles. They kept adding villains and took out the humor.

Remember when they were going to make a Spyro movie? I'm glad that it got canceled, especially being based of of the Legend of Spyro series.

Strange that you mention later Spyro games being liked by rabid fans for maturity, because Skylanders is being marketed to a younger than usual audience for the series. Still, Skylanders is the best step taken for the franchise in years, if only for making Spyro marketable for other games again.

After reading the reviews, I'm really looking forward to trying this. I know that it has the potential to get VERY expensive so I'm going to wait and pick up more characters as stores start to clear them out.

It is actually a pretty interesting concept that I wouldn't be surprised if pokemon utilized with their next game. But really eveything that can be acomplished with the figures can be done in game without figures it just a way to suck more money out of you.

But for some reason I'm still drawn to it and might try it out.

weird but neat.

I like it when developers try something a little different.

Wal-mart too.

Of course Zhu Zhu's are now dirt cheap so you just need to wait.
