Let's say one day my original Xbox dies on me for some reason. Can I buy a new one and just swap out the hard drives leaving my save games intact? Assuming of course the problem with the Xbox isn't the HD.

Assuming your saves are on a memory card... yes. If the HDD has all of the data and craps the bed, maybe, maybe not. In short, you can't simply swap out an Xbox HDD for another drive and call it a day. It can be done, but there are steps involved. Google around a bit, and you can easily find tutorials.

Edit: Nevermind, you were talking about the Xbox failing, not the hard drive inside of it.

Not 100% sure, but I do not think this will work on a stock XB, due to the hard drives being locked.

If you have a modded XB, you should be able to unlock the HDD, and then pop it into another modded XB. Even if that doesn't work (never had more than one XB to try it on), the unlocked HDD can be read by a PC and you could back up your data that way, to make sure you never lose anything should your system die.

when my original modded xbox was on the brink of crapping out, i backed up all the saves to laptop and transferred them to my new modded console and none of the saves worked

i cant really offer any explanation or reasoning as to why, but thats what happened, so i guess avoid that route, backing them up on memory card like someone else suggested seems like the smartest way to go

This. The OE Xbox's HDD's were locked to the system. You would have to have your Xbox modded to unlock the HDD. Then, if your system died, you could pull the HDD and install into another modded system.

That old topic appears to be for Xbox 360. Not Xbox.

Ooooh.... ORIGINAL Xbox.

Your best bet is to back up your HD key, then you can sign another drive with the same key. And IIRC, you don't need to mod the console to do this.

The original xbox is one of the easiest consoles to work on. Parts are cheap and readily available on eBay. Just replace them.

You can replace everything BUT the hard drive. As mentioned above, the HDD is locked to the board, and the only way to unlock is to mod the system.
