Hi guys. I'm thinking it’s time to buy a new system in the next few weeks. I’m torn between the PS 3 and 3 ds. I did own 3 ds for a short while and liked it but I sold it because the 1st party content was a lot further down the road than I thought plus I was in a bit of a pinch and thought what the hell.

I'm thinking 3 ds for the following reasons: super Mario land 3 ds, Mario kart 7 (and any Mario games to follow as well as games like star fox and ridge racer. The portability is a big plus too. It would be nice to watch movies, surf the web and play games wherever I am.

The ps3 has some games I would really like to try out such as little big planet 1&2 burnout paradise and the ridge racer games.Theres also a nice back catalog with alot of under $20,00 games. The thing that scares me is the red ring issue. I hate to put all that cash into a system and games only to have it crash on me. I talked to the guy at the mom and pop video game sop about how many they see come in for repair and he said they get quite a few every week with the average repair cost around $150.00.

The other factor is cost, I could get the 3ds for 170.00 or the ps3 and a three year warranty for 300.00. I am not doing great financially so I want to make a good choice here. What do you guys think? And what are your experiences with PS 3's crashing? Thanks.

Then wait until you're more stable. Seriously. I've learned that the hard way. Once you buy the system, you'll want more games...

Neither if money could be a problem.

Otherwise, PS3. Uncharted 1-3 should call your name. The 3DS is a waste of time for now.

The red ring issue is on the 360. The slim PS3s are very reliable.

If you had the 3DS already, there's not much sense getting it before the revision. It's not like Mario Kart or Mario platformer are something one absolutely can't wait a while for. Vita is also not so far away now. DS and PSP are both so much better choices for portable. It doesn't seem like PS3 is of huge importance for you either, I say use the money for something else.

I'll second this, excluding the Uncharted endorsement.

I was torn between a Ferrari and a beach house recently, but forgot I can't afford either. Screw it, I'll go with the beach house.

I wouldn't go for the 3DS for the sole reason that there isn't a second analog stick and in the future it's almost a guarantee they'll release a revision with one included.

However, here are some things to think about. With the 3DS it plays all DS games, so if you don't own a DS then I'd say that the 3DS is a great choice as the DS is the second best system this gen. Just right behind the PSP.

If you own a DS, then right now the 3DS is the worst choice. There are only a couple games worth purchasing and there's not much coming out.

I'm an owner of the 60GB PS3 and it's still working fine with no problems. I'd recommend against the warranty as it's really a waste of money, but really your choice if you want to get it or not.

I do agree with Oobgarm in a way as well, so if you aren't doing to well financially, just make sure that you purchase games you'll really get your money out.

The Uncharted double pack are third person shooters. You're getting two of the best games this genre at a cheaper cost. Yakuza 3 and 4 are beat em up titles that can be found for fairly cheap, both having a ton of content. Saboteur is a GTA clone with a ridiculous amount of content, but really it's just different Nazi operations to blow up. GTA4 Complete has GTA4 and all DLC on a single disc. Oblivion GotY, but one thing with the PS3 version is that if you catch the disease to change into a vampire it can't be cured, so make sure you don't contract the disease. Here are a few examples of games that are definitely worth your money.

its most likely the 3ds is going to be redesigned and rereleased early next year anyway so i would hold out, as for the ps3 getting the ylod (not the rrod) this is mostly prevelant in the older fat original ps3's, as far as i know, slims are much more resilient and actually now that i think of it, i've never even heard of a slim getting the yellow light,

plus its back catalog of games is dirt cheap right now, used or new, and has way more games than what is currently available, unless you're taking the train or bus to work/school/wherever everyday and desperately need something to hold u over during the ride, i'd go with the ps3

Slim 360's and late model original models are reliable machines as well. The old RROD is almost a non issue these days unless you're keeping a older model going or are considering buying used.

XBOX 360 -my number one choice

3DS wait for redesign

PS3 would be my first choice. Had an Xbox and none of the exclusives made me want to keep it. Luckily, I was able to sell it for a decent price.

3DS is a fantastic portable, but isn't so great at playing the DS games. If you've never had a DS, then maybe you won't notice a difference. If you're going for a PS3, I'd wait till Black Friday to see what deals come out for it. Don't think the 3DS will receive anything major.

PS3, unless you need a good paper weight

What others said - if you don't have the money, wait. The PS3 I think is more compelling right now, but you could easily put $150 toward a PS2 or DS and a bunch of games and get more bang for your buck. I have both, and I don't even have a 3DS game yet (nothing worth $40, in my opinion). I could name 50 great PS2 or DS titles though...

How so? I haven't had a problem playing DS games on my 3DS and they look great running at their original aspect ratio on the better screens.

To mirror what others have said don't spend money on either if your not confident in your financial situation.

Outside of stating the obvious I would really just look at what games each system has to offer. If you want the next mario/zelda/metroid/starfox then pick up the 3DS, its guarented to at least have several versions of the Nintendo staples you can't get anywhere else along with the library of DS games to back it up.

If you want a diverse range of exclusive titles on a HD console then pick up the PS3. There are a ton of great games from FPS to Platformers that you can only get on this console and the slim models largely took care of the earlier reliability issues. You also get access to online competitive play on most games if your interested in that and it plays PS1 games regardless of model.

They are two VERY different platforms outside of cost and objectively comparing them seems kinda silly so its really up to what you want to play.

Thanks guys. After reading through your post i think the ps 3 might be the better choice. I'm gonna do some research as to what games are out there. I think I'll wait untill black friday and see if i can get a better deal.

Both! And buy them now, don't wait until Black Friday. The economy needs you, man!

I don't know what it's like in the US but here in Canada 360 games are almost always cheaper than PS3 games. If money is as tight as you are saying I would look and see which system you can pick up the cheapest games for.

In terms of portable gaming, do you have a cell phone? If you've got a smart phone check out what games are or there. Since I got mine a couple months ago I haven't touched my DS and I've just been downloading the free games.

As others have said before me, if money is that tight wait.

Or keep it in the freezer.

I'd wait till Black Friday to see what deals come out for it.

Black Friday is a joke. Unless you get out there really early, like before the store opens early, you won't get some of the truly great deals. After leaving at 8am and still not getting any of the deals I wanted from any store, the same thing happened the previous year but not as early. I decided to not even bother with Black Friday any longer at all unless it's online purchases.

If the op is interested in getting a PS3, this week would be the best.

Coming out on Tuesday, Kmart is offering the 320GB Uncharted 3 PS3 bundle with Uncharted 1 and 2 for $299.99. Instead of just getting the 320GB for $299, you're getting all three Uncharted games.

Target is offering buy two get one free on all games and accessories. Amazon has buy two get one free with certain games as well, but Amazon likes to price jack items up for deals like this, then lower them once they're gone(would still be cheaper than most places, more games, but also only one per customer.)
