Hi,
I was browsing www.alibaba.com looking at the various Famicom clone and other game consoles when I came across this (http://goodone.en.alibaba.com/product/460103119-212528287/64BIT_PS1000_Video_game_player_Support_HDMI_USB2_0 _SDHC_PS_PSONE.html).
It looks like a media player which hooks up to your TV, that has two PlayStation-type controller ports. It loads files over USB or SDHC card and in addition to the normal video and audio formats, supports PlayStation (1) ISO images. So it most likely has a PS1 emulator built into its firmware.
Has anyone seen or used something like that? It looks quite nice from the pictures, but I don't feel like blowing $1000+ to find out (minimum order quantity is 20).

While I haven't tried one personally, you don't need to buy them from a bulk sales website. They have them on DealExtreme and other Chinese export sites that sell to the US and the going rate seems to be under $100.
In the ones that I've seen (both in Dingoo/PSP form and consolized) they have some interesting features like HDMI output and actual PS1 controller inputs .... but I suspect that the emulator will be flaky and the on-board ram will be under-powered to the point of not being able to run most games that have a lot of polygon based play.
For sprite-based 2D games they're probably okay. If I ever come across one cheap and easy I'll probably pick it up to add to my clone system collection, otherwise, I've not heard anything overwhelmingly positive.

First PSX clone I have seen. Is it purely software based emulation or does it have any hardware similarities to the PSX?

Probably all software running in some Linux type shell. A lot of the high powered emulator heavy handhelds like Wiz and Dingoo have PSX emulators on them.

I like how it's vaguely ripping off the look of a PS3 slim, but in the approximate size of a PS2 slim.

Here's a PSP/Dingoo style handheld version
They've been on the market for a while now, but again, no chatter about them tells me that they're likely lackluster.

That, and it is way more impressive for a clone to clone hardware rather than just emulating it. I don't think we will ever see a disc based hardware PS1 clone, and it will be a few more years if an N64 clone ever surfaces.
