The usual really. Metriod 2, Battletoads, some Mega Man titles, managed to beat some of them, some i didn't, don't ask.

Good one - not a classic though. (2007)

True. They are hard ones. Battletoads is harder with 2 players which i found odd. And I'm pretty good at mega man. But QUICKMAN'S STAGE IS HARD AS HELL!

Batman Returns for the Atari Lynx is pretty hard. You only get one life, no continues, and there are a ton of enemies attacking you at all times. I've only been able to make it half way through the second level.

Battletoads and Ninja Gaiden are not really that hard, IMO. I second Chakan. I'd also say that Turrican, the first one, is pretty insane. None of the sequels are that difficult.

Thinking back to 8-bit computer gaming, there were so many brutal ones: Fist II, Cybernoid, Zamzara, the last boss of Barbarian, etc.. Most of the usual NES games people list are cakewalks in comparison.

There are harder games on NES than the ones people usually mention. It seems like people tend to bring up games that are actually decent (TMNT, Ninja Gaiden, Battletoads, etc.). If you want really hard NES games, look at the shit. Like, Cobra Command, that game is ridiculous.

Played or beat? Because Robowarrior was a bastard.
Ah, one of my favorites and one I've completed many, many times. The trick to Robowarrior is that you really can't afford to die, not even once, since it halves your inventory. Toward the end of the game you need those lanterns or mega bombs or multiple rafts (for that one stage that is completely flooded at the end and the key is inside a block that takes like five bombs to destroy). You also need to keep healthy item levels across the board constantly via the underground areas. In the last playthrough I did, I died due to a stupid mistake somewhere around the third to last stage. Luckily I had a massive enough stock of items that I didn't have to reset. I still say it would have worked great as an arcade game where you had a single life and could buy-in additional lives. The Bomberman spin-off that desperately needs a remake!
Battletoads is just poorly designed, a bunch of interesting ideas that don't work together. Ghosts 'n Goblins, while extremely challenging, requires determination and patience but it can be powered through once you get the hang of how things work in the game. Ninja Gaiden doesn't get hard until the end. The US release of Ninja Gaiden III, on the other hand, is just stupidly difficult.

Battle Garegga for Saturn gets my vote. Plenty of situations where it's advantageous to just die because it helps clear the screen with your explosion.
I found Batman for nes quite challenging in the later levels, but not cheaply so. Just legitimately difficult. Fun game.

The Ooze for Genesis. I'm pretty sure the second world is unbeatable since virtually anything you touch kills you.
Also, Battletoads for the Genesis, it's possibly the most difficult version of that game.

The Ren & Stimpy Show: Space Cadet Adventures. If it moves, it will hurt your large defenseless ass. Only four levels, but goddamn are they long, with only one checkpoint a piece. And how about that pixel specific platforming.

I actually beat that one when I was 13. Only cool thing about the ending was the voice overs.
This topic has come up before and I'll still stand by Home Improvement (snes) and Goofy's Hysterical History Tour (genesis) as being some of the hardest.

Agreed. I've beaten the second level one time in all of the years I've owned that game.
I'd like to add Target Earth for the Genesis. I realize there is a cheat code, but, without that code, the game is very close to impossible.

I'll have to disagree on both. The Ooze isn't hard since you can destroy all the enemies with your ooze shot. Once you know the areas its not hard to navigate and survive.
Battletoads Genesis is tough but nowhere the cheapness found on NES. I hear people often say the Genesis version sucks because it's not as hard. Personally, I think it's got a better difficulty curve, better music, and graphics.

Bubsy in Fractured Fury Tales for the Jaguar. Myself and most others cannot beat the first level even after many tries. One hit and you are dead in this game. And every time you have to start at the beginning of the huge level. The controls are loose, framerate not so great, enemies are huge and cheap. Hit detection is not so great. Ya.
Highlander Jaguar CD, really bad controls, cheap enemies. Difficult to last 15 minutes in this game without getting slaughtered.
Syndicate Jaguar, how the hell do you play this game anyway? Seems way too complex and confusing.
Silver Surfer NES, 1 hit deaths, ugh.
Mega Man NES series, these games are hard to me. Did not grow up with them.
TMNT 1 NES - ya, really hard, never beat it after playing so many times over the years.
Virtua Racing 32X and others - This game always gets praised for how good it is, yet I find it extremely difficult to win and I am good at racing games. I find the ultra high difficulty off putting even though the control is good and graphics and framerate good too.
Doom on nightmare difficulty.
Rayman on jaguar and others.
mortal kombat 1-3 on harder difficulties, ai is so cheap. heck these games are even hard to beat on easy difficulty.
daytona usa, almost impossible to win.
zool 2 jaguar
iron soldier jaguar
cybermorph jaguar
resident evil 1 ps1
alien vs predator jaguar
tempest 2000
most of these i list are great games but extremely difficult to beat or even get close to the end.

Ninja Gaiden II, Xbox 360. Hard enough for most people to beat, but on hard or mentor it's so difficult it's not even fun. Like a cheap difficult.
Think about barely beating the game and fighting 10-15 people per typical battle. Well now on hard or mentor, you're fighting 15-20 people, they all have much more health and inflict more damage, and they also shoot rocket launchers non stop from off screen. So now all of the close range combat sequences also have long range projectiles shooting at you, which makes it damn near impossible to string along any decent combo.
Hardest "fun" game? Ninja Gaiden Black on original Xbox. In that game the difficulty felt right, even if some of the sections seemed impossible. The AI just had awesome blocking skills and lethal combos at higher difficulty levels, instead of becoming rocket-toting ninjas.
Those games will test the patience of even the best gamers around.

I disagree, I found the Genesis version easiest for many little reasons. The "speeder bike" section that everyone bitches about is easier on Genesis because your ship moves (sideways) faster.
The hardest version of Battletoads is the Amiga (and/or CD32) version, but that's just because it's absolutely rubbish.

Hmmm, sounds like you haven't played it then. I've played the NES ones, and while hard, they aren't nearly as hard as NGII on X360 on Mentor. Most people can't even unlock the Mentor difficulty, let alone beat a level on it, not to mention the entire game.

I'm gonna have to channel AVGN, but Dragon's Lair for NES is just the hardest game ever. Even cheating like crazy (save states), it was just friggin terrible. Yes, it has absolutely to do with s****y gameplay, and Dirk being slower than a constipated sloth. It's hard to get past the opening in the first place, and even harder to even want to continue if you do.
I agree that Battletoads and Ghost n Goblins are very hard games... Ninja Gaiden is as well, but you can at least get somewhere in it before it becomes ridiculous. TMNT is difficult, and I never got past the dam legit as a kid, but maybe from cheating I learned how to get through the maze, because I can at least get to the 3rd level now.
I don't see the difficulties for the Mega Man series (except for 1), and Zelda II. I grew up playing Mega Man, and was able to finish them just fine (except for 1... I had to use the glitch). Zelda II, I only tried playing it seriously for the first time last year, but I suppose I had an effective strategy, because it wasn't nearly as hard as I was expecting - just plodded along, and beat the final boss only maybe the 3rd or 4th time facing him.
Before I go, Street Fighter 2010 (NES) is definitely among the hardest games ever. The first stage is pretty damn hard, and it doesn't get any easier (another one I had to cheat on to advance).

For the NES I would say Friday The 13th, The Immortal, and Zelda II rank among the hardest games I've ever played as far as retro goes. There was also a few games such as Gex for the 3DO which gave me problems in later levels, and maybe some RPG's for the SNES as well, but those three games for the NES had me ripping my hair out until I got a Game Genie.
Great idea for a thread BTW, I love discussions such as this. :)

Hmmm...so damned many over the years...
NES: Ninja Gaiden and most of the Mega Man games. Ughhh, I wont say anymore...
3DO: LOVED the Alone in the Dark games, but DAMN what a frame-rate in many parts! I'd be hung-up for MINUTES between most scenes. The part in the garden where you have to avoid the guards was insane, and many parts, I swear, are unbeatable due to glitches. :onfire:
Genesis/Mega: So many of the "trial and error" run-and-guns made me squeeze my beer can like friggin' Popeye squeezing a can of spinach. Data East's Atomic Runner was a favorite, but damnnnnnnnnnn....
PS2: Onimusha. LOVE these games, and I consider myself a decent enough player, but some of those "down-in-the-hole-other-dimension/hell-areas" could be just brutal on me.
So many, many more.... Arcade Double Dragon...Sweet Jesus...there went the friggin quarters...sorry....I'm done now..
Great idea for a thread.

Battletoads has already been mentioned, so I'll add Comix Zone. The fact that you only have one life and even punching objects in order to progress through panels depletes your life is pretty brutal.
I have to admit that the original Castlevania has always been pretty tough, too, starting from the third level onwards.
I'll also give A Boy and His Blob props for challenge. Sometimes the solutions to the puzzles are quite obtuse.

RC Pro AM on the NES
and i'll tell you why. Back when i was younger i use to play the shit out of this game on the NES. Its a honest to god super fun game. But when you get up to the harder levels the computer controlled cars cheat so bad. Like if you don't think on your toes and crash cars/ spin them out/ shoot missiles/bomb them.. You will lose the race no matter how good you are/how well you mastered the tracks layout. I think that game actually started my scream at the top of my lungs swearing like a drunken sailor at a video game cause its cheap tricks habit.
