Dear Steam Users and Steam Forum Users:

Our Steam forums were defaced on the evening of Sunday, November 6. We began investigating and found that the intrusion goes beyond the Steam forums.

We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating.

We don’t have evidence of credit card misuse at this time. Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely.

While we only know of a few forum accounts that have been compromised, all forum users will be required to change their passwords the next time they login. If you have used your Steam forum password on other accounts you should change those passwords as well.

We do not know of any compromised Steam accounts, so we are not planning to force a change of Steam account passwords (which are separate from forum passwords). However, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to change that as well, especially if it is the same as your Steam forum account password.

We will reopen the forums as soon as we can.

I am truly sorry this happened, and I apologize for the inconvenience.

Gabe.

TL;DR
Hackers got a ton of info on our Steam accounts, and they may be able to crack the passwords. Change everything.

Interesting. First it seemed like they just posted advertising, to get to peoples money that way, but meh. Good thing that i use different passwords for everything important. Thank you for the info.

Ah yes: I get an error that my "request cannot currently be processed", guess i'm not the only one trying.

Eh... well I decided to change my password and secret question. Thanks for the heads-up all the same.

Thanks for the heads up, don't use steam much lately so I probably would of missed this.

I just wanted to quote directly from Gabe.

Four days before they decided to mention anything to us? Thanks. Now I'm a kajillion billion dollars in debt. That's my credit card limit.

Honestly don't care. I didn't have a card on Steam anyways, and my password is actually not the same as all my others. Sounds kind of familiar though doesn't it?

Still can't change my PW because it can't be processed. WTF? Anyone else still got that problem?

See, stuff like this is why Digital Distribution is NEVER gonna work and is gonna be the death of gaming should it take off.

Heck if I'm putting myself at risk just to play some Team Fortress.

I was able to change my password right away.

I tried last night and I couldn't. I'll try again tonight when I get home. Makes me nervous, though.

Edit: just tried and I can't even log in. "Steam is having trouble connecting to the Steam servers. Please try again later." What the hell is going on there?

I guess I should try to change my password, I don't even remember what it is right now as I only signed up to get Portal when it was offered for free. I'm just glad I don't use it so no major personal information is really at risk.

Steam often has hiccups when a lot of people try to access it. Not only are people trying to change their passwords, there's lots of other folks downloading and playing Skyrim right now. Their servers are being hammered.

Be patient, you'll be able to change your password soon.

Changed my password last night. I'm fairly certain I didn't have any CC info logged with them. The screen said my e-mail address wasn't even verified when I went to change my password.

Heh. Since I didn't log in there very often, I kept forgetting my Steam forum password, so I just left it as the randomly-generated string from the last time I got it reset.

And everything I buy from them is done through Paypal. No worries! I think.

And now maybe Steam will have a ridiculous sale by way of apology! Except they would probably do that anyway.
