hi guys. I'm grabbing a ps 3 on black friday. What do you guys know about the failer rate of them. You hear alot of talk on the net about it. I talked to a guy at a indy game shop that repairs them and he says they see quite a few come in and the avrage repair cost is about $150.00. The guy I always talk to at game stop says the slims seem to be better as far as not failing.

A few chains have the 160 gb bundles with 2 games for 200 bucks on black friday and i have the cash saved but that supposedly high failure rate scares the hell out of me.

Thanks.

I bought a 40GB fatty used back in 2007 and it died this past June. A couple months later I bought a slim, brand new. So far, so good.

I picked up a used launch 60 gig in rough shape in 2008 and pretty much abused it myself with not dusting it, moving it around a lot, and generally keeping it in places that would accumulate hot air. it started throwing out the Yellow Light of Death earlier this year so its been permanently shelved for the moment, still retrospectively I am pretty surprised it lasted as long as it did. However I got a TON of hours out of it, used the thing for a movie/netflix box for probably significantly more hours then I spent gaming. I've been using a slim 160gig ever since with no problem, heats up significantly less then the older fat model and has a much quieter fan.

You have to consider is that failure rates for the Xbox360 and PS3 are both high in comparison to previous gens. Its unlikely that your slim will fail but not impossible, all you need to do is take care of it and it will work fine.

And whatever shop your talking about it ripping people off pretty horribly. The two main PS3 services rapair services are reflowing and reballing for the major shutdown issues and each only cost about 40 and 90 bucks at the most from private repair shops. The only place that charges 150 for a PS3 repair is Sony and they will probably just ship you out a whole new console.

I bought an 80GB model new and in a few months something got screwed up with the video or something. It got replaced under warranty and so far the refurb has been working great.

One thing to remember: people will complain more than they will praise. If a machine works, you won't really hear about it. Considering there really hasn't been anything in the news, unlike the original 360, I think the failure rate isn't bad.

My launch 60GB is still going strong but I really only watch Blu-ray movies on it.

This 60GB upgraded to 80GB is fine for now. I'll probably sell it soon, want money toward a serious gaming PC. Besides I'd rather have PS3 slim.

My 60GB fatty that I got back in late 2007 is still going strong with no problems at all. I'm not sure what the exact failure rate is though, it's nothing as high as the 360 though. Just do what I use to tell my customers when I was working at an Indy store, keep the system flat instead of vertical, place it where it has room to breathe, and don't set it on the floor where dust and hair will get into the fans. I would recommend picking up a slim model though, as they run quieter and stay fairly cool.

I have a 60GB model and never had a problem. My best friend also has a 60GB which stopped reading Bluray/PS3 but still read DVDs, then stopped reading DVDs. The console itself is still working, but the disc drive won't read anything.

He's purchased a slim since then. Has had it atleast a year and no problems except for missing PS2 bc, but then again, anything other than the 60/20/early 80gb consoles are missing PS2 bc.

My 80 gb will not accept discs. It was clean, lightly used. Didn't take too long to fail. Failed after warranty (of course). The sensor or something. Need to get it fixed.

So far the slims seem pretty reliable, but no one's really sure if that's because they actually improved things, or they're just not old enough yet to have started massively failing. It took a while for the YLOD to start showing up in large numbers in the older model. And of course it's less than 360 RROD rates in any event.

My 2006 launch unit 60GB YLOD failed on me in 2011.

Standard usage with regular high-powered vacuum cleaning of all of the vents and fans.

Dealt with Sony directly for out-of-warranty repairs, they replaced it with a new 60GB unit.

Since I don't find myself dipping into my PS2 library much these days I'll likely put the 60GB in storage and get a slim with a huge HDD sometime in the new year.

i bought a used 60 gb a year or so after lunch. It was going into turbo mode often so about 6 months ago I opened it up and put new thermal paste on it. No problem since then and it rarely goes into turbo mode now. I think adding new thermal compound is worth it but maybe not a job for everyone.

Got a 60GB used a year and a half ago, still running fine. Only had a few issues with it, namely game crashes, but these were with games that are known to have crashing issues.

I have two original launch model 60 gigs that I found at yard sales earlier this year. One has been upgraded to a 150 gig and the other still has the "install other OS" option. Although neither of them have had any problems playing games, they are both loud as hell, atleast as loud as original launch 360's. I don't really use them since I have a slim but I'm keeping one just for the hell of it. I've been trying to sell the other one(with 150 gigs) for awhile but haven't gotten any takers yet.

I have a 20GB launch unit upgraded to 120GB. Still runs great. I keep it on its side with plenty of room around it and clean the vents regularly. Only had one game that kept freezing but the game manufacturer helped with that and it's been fine.

80GB Metal Gear model and no issues.

Also have a launch 60GB that's running strong.

I bought a used 60gb model in 2008. Works fine for playing games, but it simply will not connect to PSN for some reason. I can download a system update, I can use the internet browser, and it'll even load the what's new on PSN thing on the dashboard, but I can't actually log in to PSN.

Interesting.

I wonder if Sony banned the console at an ID-level for something that the previous owner did.

Have you ever attempted to call them and ask? Maybe they can sort it out.

I had bought an 80GB Motorstorm bundle back in 2008. The first time I ever turned it on I got an error about the HD could not be found. It happened a few times over the next few months, and then went away. I eventually upgraded the HD to the 160 and haven't seen that issue since (probably just a few bad physical sectors on that original drive). Other than that initial problem, it has run very well. A few lockups here and there, but nothing serious. I love my PS3 fattie, and hope it lasts forever!

Have a launch PS3 that still runs perfectly. I also just got a slim PS3 for use as a Blu Ray player/casual gaming unit on a Sony EX720 3D TV and so far it's working great. I've been pretty lucky, none of my launch units this generation (Xbox 360, Wii and PS3) have had any issues. In fact, the only console I think I have ever owned that has failed is my launch Atari Jaguar.

What are you folks paying on a typical day for a used PS3 lately?

All my nephews and nieces have one and I'd like to play with them on-line as I can't seem to talk them into getting a 360 like me and my kids have.

At this point, you should wait a week for the PS3 160GB holiday bundle. It comes with two great games and a new slim system and controller for $199 at most retailers on Black Friday.

I went through 2 60GB PS3s off ebay until the seller sent me a third that worked. They both overheated.

I paid $125 for mine, but that was two years ago. Felt a little bad for the guy, actually.

I bought a fat 80gb model about 2 and a half years a go, and it's been running pretty well. I mostly use it for Netflix and NHL Gamecenter, with occasional gaming and Blu-Ray use.

Tho it's been doing something odd lately; I turn it on, it looks like everything is booting up fine, but I get no audio or video. I turn it off & back on, and it works just fine. It's only done it to me twice, but both instances happened within the last month. I hope it's not going bad on me. It's been rock-solid otherwise.
