BF3 Vs MW3
It's amazing that I have been away from my word processor for so long.
I mean Batman, BF3, MW3 I have played a lot of games lately between October and November. So before I do anything here is my one sentence review for batman...
BUY IT NOW!
There, now that it's out of my system lets get to the 2 dueling brothers.
It's safe to say that since the dawn of the new Millennium only 2 army based shooters have been duking it out for supremacy and the chance to be the highlander.
Battlefield and Call of Duty. One for its realism and another for its action movie type feel. So instead of just reviewing one then the other I will be pulling my Versus hat out again for yet another duel to the death as Battlefield 3 Vs Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. This ones gonna be long so lets start.
Graphics.
This is where Battlefield literally destroys MW3 since the Frostbite 2 engine makes the game look and feel great. Everyone realistically breaks and when I destroy, say a tree it actually falls down like a tree would. MW3 graphics are decent but look the same as last years with a few touch ups. However sometimes the BF3 graphics actually mess up with weapons sometimes floating in mid air, sometimes the lip sync goes off into its own little world. BF3 wins this round because honestly it looks better.
Audio
When it comes to sound effects the gunfire sounds better in BF3. The guns sound more like their real life counterparts and unlike MW3 where it sounds to clean like its from a file rather than in the field. However I prefer the music in MW3 over BF3. The score sound more epic and invokes the movie like feel the game has which helps elevate the threat, more on that later.
The biggest thing is the voice acting, and this is where both games differ...I have NEVER heard the F word said so many times in a game until I played BF3. IT was said so many times I had to check that George Carlin was dead to make sure he did not help with the script (I love GC so no disrespect). I hear bad language in MW3 but its more restrained and I think its because despite its M rating it gets more younger players than BF3.
One thing I can say that I love about BF3 is that instead of badly accented voice acting they get russian voice actors for the Russian parts of the game. This is something I never understood about war games. Why no use of the actual language if we use characters from other countries? It's bothered me for years ever since I played COD World at War. Sadly this cannot save it as I enjoy the voice acting in MW3 a lot more. I feel more connected to the characters including Captain Price and give 2 shits about them. MW3 wins this round.
Control
This is something that I never get. Now in some games the ability to the B button. I like this. Even Halo fixed this in time for Reach. Even MW3 does this. Now I have to ask...why the hell is Duck assigned to the right thumb stick in BF3? I keep forgetting that its on that stick and die so many times I want to eat the disc.
Something I love that BF3 does however is add the option to change the fire rate on weapons...I love this option, Cause in MW3 I do not have that option. This is what makes BF 3 the winner in my opinion.
Gameplay
Now were in the meat of the game, unfortunately this is the biggest disability for MW3 since it is the same game with some new toys to play with. Hybrid sights are a welcome addition since it means I can switch for long and close range combat. The difficulty is the same no matter what game I play, sad to say even though I hated Black ops last year it was much more harder than this and more challenging.
BF3 however is so brutal I recommend the next time you want to hire a dominatrix play this game on normal instead. This is the toughest game of the year. On normal is brutal, on hard I think I would commit Sepukku. The guns realistic kick back adds more skill needed to proceed and like I said the fact I can change fire rate with assault rifles and SMGs. This makes guns like M16s and AK74s into sniper rifles. So yeah, BF3 wins again.
Now before we get to co op and multiplayer, I want to get to the stories.
SP/Story
Now this is where both games dangerously differ.
MW3 goes for a more action revenge story following captain Price from the previous modern warfare games and the US Delta Squad. Something I really enjoy with this story is its more in your face but in this way it also stops wowing us until the end when you try to get Makarov and save the president...god I got some Bad Dudes flashbacks. Its an ok story.
BF3 however feels like a war drama rather than a hollywood action film. Its more down to earth and actually feels better like the better story. As much as I hated my team mates the interviews between missions actually make it feel like a movie more than MW3. MW3 feels more over the top and feels silly at times. BF3 feels more grounded which makes it the better story so BF3 wins this round...god its not looking good for MW3.
Co op
This is where MW3 actually beats BF3 since I cannot get a single person to work together with in BF3 co op. They always run off like its their own bad movie. Its weird that in COD I can get someone to work together with and in BF3 I cannot get anyone to even work together once!
The problem is that BF3 only has a handful of co op missions while MW3 found a way around this problem. By using all the mp maps as survival maps it adds more to do in the game, and adding on its spec ops missions you have more replayability with MW3. So its a win here.
Now were at the end. The Multiplayer.
This was the hardest part to review because of one reason.
They cater to totally different groups.
Battlefield caters to the take your time, plan it out, work together group. Call of duty caters to the run and gun tactics crowd.
If I can say one bad thing about BF3 its that the levels are freaking huge. This is good for the rush mode which I enjoy as its a fresh change of pace but just cutting a section of those maps for a team deathmatch is kind of lazy but works for some maps. I wish that the Metro map used the subway area though instead of the shop area. Vehicles are in the game and I love the driving vehicles but have a problem with aerial vehicles but that's my own problem, not the game. The MP is actually pretty solid and requires a skill that takes time to learn, and when you learn it you feel like you own the world.
When it comes it Call of Duty, its the same damn thing with a few big updates.
The first is that killstreak are overhauled to 3 classes. Assault, support and specialist...sadly I have not leveled up to try specialist but I have to say its a welcome change. Support continues after you die and stacks up to get to stuff like stealth bombers and EMPs...this makes the game even more unbalanced. Since everyone will play support to get any attack rewards in the support role. A new mode called kill confirmed makes use of killing a person then grabbing their dog tags...sort of like melee kills inBF3 and grabbing their tags. Another thing added is weapon leveling up. This is good but not enough for me to give my verdict.
As much as I love MW3 MP I have to give it to BF3...the superior MP.
The final tali is
BF3:5
MW3:2
yeah...this was a hard one. So here are my ratings
Battlefield 3: Own
A great game with hours of MP fun
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3: Try
although flawed its worth a look and with plenty to offer co op players its worth the price tag...if it goes down.
Ouch
