Seriously, what kinds of games are you interested in? The NES library has 1,000+ titles, and I'm not gonna begin going through 967 of 'em to recommend. Give us a little something to go on. You like platformers? RPGs? Sports titles? Action games? Driving games? Give us a hint and we'll be happy to help.

If you don't have Zanac you don't deserve to have an NES, says I.

Jacki Chan's Action Kung-fu
Bonk's Adventure
And if you like street fighter type games, TMNT Tournament Fighters
The Tiny Toon games are pretty good too, and if you like puzzles, Kickle Cubicle is "Da Bomb!"
*As a note, it's easier for us to read lists when they're alphabatized.

Get a pen and paper.
Ready?
TROG.
You must seek out Trog. Easily one of the best NES titles out there, and not too expensive if you can track it down.
You should also try and pick up the game where the creature does that stuff where they jump and defeat a bad guy. You know that one? Get that one too.

Yes, Trog was GOLD. That game kept me busy for many an hour. I'd also suggest Dragon Warrior III (if you're into RPG's that is) , Maniac Mansion, Duck Tales, and Clash at Demon Head. Those are just some of my favorites, look 'em up.

Maniac Mansion and the Star Tropics series are a MUST.
Both have great stories and addictive gameplay. :)

Kid Icarus

Journy to Silius is bad ass, pick that one up. I'd say it's one of the most underrated nes games ever.

oh and two more: Contra and Kung Fu. :D

Don't forget that Journey to Silius was originally a Ternimator game, untill they lost the licence at the last minute.
Plus you gotta get at least one Megaman game, parts 2 or 3 should be affordable.

Hmmm . . . Try Rygar, Strider, the Ninja Gaiden trilogy, Bionic Commando, The Guardian Legend, Clash at Demonhead, Mega Man 2 or 3, Vice: Project Doom, Metal Storm, Faria, Little Nemo, Dragon Warrior IV, Gun Nac, Super C, and my favorite NES game of all, Crystalis.

Some hidden gems/ B titles...
Super Spy Hunter (think contra in a car), if you like Pinball get Pinbot and High Speed. You really ought to get Excitebike, Dr. Mario and RC ProAM as well...
Cheers,
Ben

Sleeper hit alert:
Firehawk
It's like an arcade style Desert Strike played from a direct overhead view, at a much quicker pace. It's tons of fun. And get this: it's from Codemasters. So if you see a bunch of gold cartridges for sale, look for Firehawk.

Seems everyone mentioned most of the greats. Here's my two cents.
Bionic Commando
Kickle Cubicle

Well, it's one of those crazy mixed up unofficial metallic colors. I guess I'm just shocked that Code Masters actually made an arcade style game that's really fun, and not super frustrating.
