i adore my psp, the games are awesome, but one of the things i love about it is the ability to emulate my favorite systems of years past.

which brings me to my question, what will the playstation vita be able to emulate? i hope this isnt a forbidden subject, if it is would someone please delete it.

It's impossible to know what, if any, homebrew applications that may be developed for this. The thing hasn't even been released yet.

Given it's technical specs I would not be surprised if it could emulate everything through last generation.

I imagine Sony would have a mind for eventually relreleasing PS2 games for download on the handheld.

It should be able to handle most the MAME games as well.

This assumes that it is 'hackable', and generally everything is...eventually.

For a very long time I'm hoping on nothing.

If the Vita is as easily hackable as the PSP, where no purchase is necessary and you just have to do a simple download and patch, the Vita will be in the same boat as the PSP. It doesn't have the help of the family friendly Nintendo brand name to push sales to parents that don't know about downgrades and flashcards after the fact.

The specs of the hardware on paper + the flexibility that Android friendly/based code running on it + dual analogs + buttons + touchscreen + back touchpad + USB + bluetooth connectivity bring to the table ...

... christ, when the thing is inevitably hacked to run homebrew the question is what WON'T it run.

It could probably replace the CPUs in most powerhouse MAME/multicade cabinets.

Here's hoping Sony won't be stupid about this and actually release a software package that allows people to create their own software - stuff like media players, mini games, etc.

It will be interesting to see what it can do when emulators are released for it.

I dont think the 4 cores are going to help emulation as all the old games are designed for one core. It will be interesting to see if theres anything new it will emulate.

That won't matter. Emulating any system requires emulating lots of different parts - the CPU, sound hardware, graphics hardware, I/O, etc. If you can handle those on separate threads, you can take advantage of a multi-core CPU.

Sure, why not? Everybody knows how open Sony is. :p

The problem with the Vita emulating old school systems, is the same problem as the PSP. The 16:9 screen doesn't lend itself to retrogaming very well. Sure, you can adjust it so that it's a 4:3 window pillarboxed in the 16:9 frame, but then you have those annoying black bars on the sides.

I really wish that there was a 4:3 portable with the power of Vita for emulation, with an amazing OLED screen like the Vita has. Could you imagine that?

Being 3:2, GBA games are perfect on the PSP The bars on the left and right are extremely small in comparison to 4:3. As for me, I'm not bothered by 4:3 on PSP. After purchasing and watching my first widescreen movie, by accident, on an SDTV, I've never purchased another full screen movie again. You just have to look at it like you have a smaller tv, not like there are black bars on the left and right, because it's the same thing. Whether you have black bars on the left and right or the tv panel without the black bars, you're still getting the full picture. You can zoom in but you're missing about 30% of the picture.

Pillarboxing and/or letterboxing has never bothered me. As long as I'm taking up as much screen real estate as I can while still maintaining the correct aspect ratio, I'm happy.
