Went to my local Movie Exchange. They've got a giant selection of gently used DVDs, blu-rays, CDs, and games.

So checking out their glass display case where they keep their used consoles and loose cart games (think NES, Genesis, etc.) I came across a copy of Zombies Ate My Neighbors. Boy, what a deal this was....

Anyone else take snapshots of grossly overpriced commons? Please share!

A game store near me had two Master Systems w/hookups, controllers, phasers for $120 each. I asked how they priced them, but got no answer. They were $50 each next time I went to the store.

The next week, they had an Atari 2600 (6-switch, but not a heavy) for $90. They are also trying to sell PS1 Suikoden with a cracked case for the low price of $75.

Strangely, I picked up a boxed set of SMS 3-D glasses from there for $10. They had all the 3-D games CiB except for Space Harrier for $5 each. :)

Very inconsistent pricing.

Yeah, the store I was at had a cart only copy of River City Ransom for $28. Just a few bucks higher than what it's "going for" on Ebay.

Maybe I should go back and pick it up...

I was at a Goodwill a few months ago where they had a boxed 32x priced at $80. I should have taken a picrure if that.

When I`m in the mall I like to stop by a store called Game City and play `let`s find the most overpriced item` It was a toss up between two $59.99 Nes games; T2 and Fist of the North Star. Then as I was walking out I spotted in the main display case a loose power glove for the killer price of $249.99

Though to be fair I see the price on their pirate multicart has been slashed from $499 to a measly $400. Better act fast.

There's this one place that has a few locations in Tennessee, it's called Packard's... It's more of a challenge to find anything in there that *isn't* severely overpriced. In addition to your semi-usual SMB/DH for $10, SMB 3 for $20, etc., you have games like Contra priced at $45, Final Fantasy 7 priced at $100, Suikoden priced at $80, and most of their PS2 games are $20-$40 (and that's the commons...never mind the RPGs and actual rares, which I've seen at and above $70 there), and their current-gen games are at or slightly above retail (read: brand-new) prices. Not to mention their customer service isn't particularly great, and the guy that owns the franchise was busted for theft...

I don't think anything I'll see will ever top the Super Mario 64 110-film camera I saw at Goodwill ages ago, which was marked $100...and sitting in a glass case right next to a very nice, almost professional quality 35mm camera that was marked $25

I think I stumbled upon one of their locations while I was on vacation in Tennessee a few years ago. Yeah, their prices were ridiculously over the top.

THIS.

I went to an ARC Thrift Store and found NES games for $10+, Game Boy games for $10+ and SNES games (all sports) $8+. Seeing greatly overpriced games makes me furious for some reason, and I just stomp out of the store. However, at the same store, I bought a copy of Harvest Moon 64 for $5, and a CIB copy of Intelligent Qube for $4.

There's a pawn shop in Sierra Vista I hit up once a year or so whenever I have to go there because all the pawn shops are on the main street and I always forget which one it is. They have had the same copies of Shining Force for Genesis and Thousand Arms for PS1 for $75 and $90 respectively for the past two years.

Next time you go in there, offer them $25 for the pair. Use the fact that they have been sitting for so long.

There's a pawn shop that does the same thing. Has a ton of NOS video games going back to the Atari, but the old man who runs the pawn shop refuses to sell them for a reasonable price. There was a younger guy who worked there who would give me deals and pull stuff out of the back room that I was interested in, but he left/quit. Needless to say, I rarely go there anymore.

see this is what ebay has done to collecting any thing. although it has been getting better, i have fund a goodwill that has some decently priced games and such, loose PSX system was $3.99 the other day....more like it.

it hasnt happened lately but when ever your faced with the "well i can get it for $x.xx on ebay" you need to have a good come back like:

"sorry i am not ebay, i am just some chump with cash in hand."
or
"if you can get that much for it then why arent you selling it on ebay, have fun with those fees and bad buyers"

or something good

Actually you hear that alot on craigs list. It's usally along the lines of "this is going for $100 online/ebay" or "this is worth this much on ebay/amazon" and I'm always thinking: then why don't you try to sell it on ebay dumbass?

A local gamestore I visited yesterday had a complete Dreamcast version of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for $49.99, about $20 higher than it's selling BIN rate on ebay... They must match their prices to the higher end of BIN's on ebay. If only they checked the completed listings and realized they never sell.

Woo, another Coloradan with an ARC near them. I've got some pretty sweet deals from them too, especially when they go 50% off. Picked up Chrono Cross, Parasite Eve, and Thousand Arms from them a bit ago for like $4 each. All were CIB except for Thousand Arms which was missing the manual.

I flip EVERYTHING as a hobby/side job, but video games are my passion. I hit up all the ARCs, Goodwills, you name, around here. I have not gone to the Springs area, but been to Boulder and Ft Collins area to go hunting. Bought some nice sterling silver bowls at a humane society thrift store in Boulder.

I was at a garage sale one time with my gf and she came across a loose n64 (covered in stickers) and a loose ps1 (old model) I my self had found a hand full of hook ups that are always randomly needed. I asked the seller how much and he said 45 dollars! This was the most unreasonable man I've ever dealt with at a garage sale (and it was pretty obvious the stuff wasn't his personally cuz he has a sale every week and the stuff changes out) I told him look this stuff isn't worth that much id do about 15 (which was still pretty expensive in my mind for a garage sale. And he was like 40! Told my gf to put it on the table and we just walked away. Right before I got in my car he called me to come back. He told me his wife told him to offer me 30 and I was like listen man its really not worth more then 15 so this time he walked away... I bet he's still trying to sell them... there are NO classic gamers in my area, hell there's no one younger then 55 that even go to garage sales in my area! Oh well there's plenty of loose n64s and ps1s in the sea...

Core 2 Duo, they said it was working but it didn't have an operating system with it, no hard drive and no power supply either, as-is for $299.99!:onfire:

Second was a external Seagate 160GB hard drive for the low price of $59.99@_@

I also say some Nintendo games for $6.99 each.

I'm surprised Goodwill had that computer out. A lot of their computers are sent off to be refurbished and resold so they can make even more money.

For the most part I've stopped going to Goodwill and only use their auction site if I see an absolute steal (which is rare). Overpriced out the ass.

Is that like a pawn shop or a mom and pop store?

Flashback2012

Is that like a pawn shop or a mom and pop store?

AFAIK, Buybacks is a chain of stores. There's a few scattered around the area here and a couple up North in/around Dayton. Every one I've ever been in has the same feel to it. The lights are too dim and everything is either way spread out on racks or crammed on top of each other in glass display cases. They all seem to have the same smell about them too.

When they first came around, they were a good place to occasionally get a good deal on a game. Anymore, they're more miss than hit and I refuse to buy disc based games from them because they run them through a buffer. If we go in now, it's more to look for obscure DS or PSP games or older cartridge based stuff.

A funny story about them was when they first came around, the guy Howard I mentioned in the "Pwned a Gamestop Douche" thread had a friend named Bruce. Like Howard, Bruce was a little...okay, a lot sloppy; but at least he would spend money when he came in the store unlike Howard. Anyway, Bruce had a CIB copy of Final Fantasy 7 GH. We couldn't take it on trade because they had discontinued PS1 trade-ins. Howard convinced Bruce to take it and some other stuff to trade in there. I can't completely remember but I think Howard was on one of his bitter trips and prompted Bruce to trade there instead of selling it to an employee or something...anyway, long story short, he takes it to Buybacks.

Fast forward a few weeks and Howard is in the store ranting and raving about how Buybacks are a bunch of crooks and cheats (he was apparently not bitter with us anymore at this point). He remarked how Bruce had went in after trading that FF7 in to shop around. He saw the game on the shelf and saw that they had it marked up to $79 or something. I think they only gave him like $20 or so for it in trade. Howard relayed to me how Bruce went ballistic on them, erupting in front of everyone and making a huge scene in the store. :yipes:

Yeah, here in Houston they're called Movie Exchange. Deals in used dvds, blu-rays, cds and games.

FB2012's description is pretty much dead on. I'm sure they're one and the same store, just under a different name here in Texas.

Despite having some stupidly overpriced games and dvds at times, you can find some really good deals there. It's the same place I found that minty $14 HDG non-TMSS Model 1 Genesis.

If the games aren't going for nearly that amount anywhere else then what makes them decide that its a good number to price them at?

This thread has me laughing out loud.

I meet a lot of collectors who overprice stuff, too.

I went to look at some candy cabs last week that somebody was hanging onto for refurbing. They were DISGUSTING. The monitors were tagged, there was tons of spilled soda under the control panel...they were foul, and he admitted he was charging highway robbery for them "to deter people from buying them", despite the fact that he's advertising them for sale on Craigslist. He wanted $1500 for a refurbed aero city (that still had a 20 year old monitor in it), and about $600 for a seriously fucked up one with only a 2 button control panel.

Now, I can understand why he charged high prices for those; he doesn't really want to sell them. He has sellers remorse because he actually loves the cabs. On the other hand, These store owners charging over $200 for super Mario sunshine are either insane, horribly misinformed, or devilishly greedy. Maybe even all three. They don't care about these games. They're not using them. They don't collect them. it doesn't make any sense why they would want to prevent them from selling, and it kind of blows my mind.

If the games aren't going for nearly that amount anywhere else then what makes them decide that its a good number to price them at?

I did the math, these prices MUST be in Mexican Pesos. Toshinden is $50, which is about $4.15. Stranglehold is around $19. It's the only way those prices make any sense.

Found some new overpriced games at a local Movie Exchange today. I don't know what they're thinking....http://img585.imageshack.us/img585/4734/57507710150661469698061.jpg

You mean my copy of Stranglehold is worth money? Woot. Oh wait, that person is just looney.

I don't have any really crazy prices like you guys have posted (and generally don't see stuff like that around here), but yesterday I took the bus out to Game Gurus in the hopes of picking up one of the PS1 Crash Bandicoot games. Spent $2.50 or something on the bus ride over there, only to find Crash 2 marked at $18! I realize these games can go for around $10 or so, tho I seem to come across them at Goodwills all the time. Still, pretty disappointing.

They could be typos, doubling pressing the 2 by mistake. Stranglehold for $21 makes a lot more sense than $221.

There's a game store near me that priced Lunar 1 for the Sega CD at $200, even though it's complete it's not worth that much. It was previously priced at $100 but they raised it.

Whaaat? Even complete, you're lucky to get $50 for Lunar 1, unless SCD prices have gone bonkerz.net in the last year or so... LOONEY TUNES, people!

I'd say $40-$50 is around the current range for Lunar: The Silver Star, depending on the condition and the disc variant that is being sold. The matte printed manual version is super common, whereas the foiled versions are more sought after, and the 7th variant is quite uncommon.

I think SegaCD stuff in general has picked up a bit in the last couple years, but Sewer Shark, Double Switch and Prize Fighter are all still pretty worthless.

On the plus side, they priced loose copies of Rad Racer II for the NES at $60.

Yea that makes sense. If something doesn't sell, lets DOUBLE the price.

You'd think they would get the hint, but someone will probably buy it eventually. I mean, an act like that takes previous experiences with customers willing to pay exorbitant prices.

The store only opened up recently, like late last year or around then. Prices were cheap when they first opened, but they raised prices once they became more established. I found a few common/non-sports SNES games for $1-3 each when they first opened, but now games are about $10 and up for non-sports titles. I can't recall if any are $4.99 but it's possible. There's a big pile of Final Fantasy III carts for $80 each, I think Chrono Trigger is the same price. The Sega CD games were more recent trade ins, sometimes one person prices something and someone else later "corrects" it. That's why the price on Lunar jumped.

Nobody asked why I said it was a plus? I brought in a loose copy and got $10 cash for it.

I can't see this store staying open for long, as much as I like the selection and employees the prices are way too high. Plus most of the games aren't cleaned. I just sold a spare Genesis system with some games today to someone locally and he told me that he bought a game from that store recently and when he got home he noticed it was still dirty with dust on the connectors. He brought up the store in conversation, it can't be good if that's the lasting impression customers get when paying top dollar for something.

I thought about that too, but IIRC, their price tags are generated by computer with the price coming out of some database. Next time I'm there, I'll ask them to see whats up. I doubt it's going anywhere.

The store that keeps getting bashed in this thread also has really good deals on some stuff, and sells other things besides games. I know some stores that sell games + other stuff only really know pricing on the other stuff, so you might see a lot of outrageous prices. I do know that many stores who try selling stuff way high don't stay in business at all. Game Town became Game Gurus, and if Game Gurus keeps up w/ their high pricing, they won't last either. (To use an example from the store I posted about.)

I passed by a $150 PlayStation 2. it was a early unit stuffed into a slim box with a network adaptor and $2 worth of worthless accessories.

Quite true.

There's a local resell store ("thrift store" at they call it) that almost always has good deals on games, sometimes on game systems, and sometimes on specialty electronics. However, try buying some piece of shit mid-2000's stereo and they want $100. To give you an example: a few years ago I bought a Panasonic 3DO for $20. However, they had it listed as a "DVD player". Even though I received a great deal, you have to look at it as them charging $20 for a DVD player.

However, since then, that store has opened a second location so they're obviously doing something right.
