Sometimes, companies feel the need to put in cryptic measures to erase all game date (not just save files but also high scores, unlockables, etc.), such as inputting codes or holding button combinations at startup. Please tell us about any such games (pardon me if there is already a similar thread).

For my part, I am trying to find out how to erase all data (not just overwrite save files) for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for the Game Boy Color. Can it even be done? I don't have the manual, which may hold the answer... thanks in advance.

Most can't even hold a highscore anymore. :<

Good luck with that. There are a few Nintendo handheld games that don't allow you to delete saved information, like Hamtaro: Ham Ham Games and (I believe) Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D.

Can't delete save data?

Just use a Game Genie / Game Shark.

Open the cartridge and remove the battery, that should kill the save file retention.

Replace the battery and you should be good to go.

That's what I had to do that for my gameboy color Metal Gear.. I even went to Konami support, and they pretty much said, "No, you can't delete the game, butyou can replay any mission."

I use a thing called the Mega Memory Card. Neat little gadget. Not only does it allow you to save/restore your savegames, it can completely blank the battery backed RAM in a GB/GBC cartridge.

Looks like this:

(hotlinked... if this turns into a goatse image, I apologize.)

When I was playing my first RPG (Final Fantasy II/IV on SNES), for some reason I didn't understand you could save over save files. It was only until one time, between times that I rented it, one of the save files got mysteriously deleted. It was only when I tried saving in that spot that I managed to figure out you would write over saves. I rented that thing easily 10-15 times before I learned that, would play through to Milon (Scarmiglione) and would get slaughtered by his second form every time.

I ended up buying that copy from that store when they cleared out their SNES stock, and checking it now, it still has some of the old saves that were on there when it was a rental as well as my own save slot from when I played through it again after I bought it. Somebody renamed Edge to "DAD". Game Genie or something of the stort seems the only plausible explanation in my case.

I was like that. First RPG I ever played. Until a few rentals in, I didn't know you had to "Equip" items. :D
(I remember writing to Nintendo to ask for help, and they told me I had to be at like level 40 to beat him. Even though by that point in the game, you'd have to grind for awhile just to reach 20. :P )
