Hey guys, I had a thought lately. It's probably not gonna manifest in reality but I was just thinking:

What if someone were gonna try to collect every release of every Street Fighter game from the original up until SFIII: Third Strike? Exactly how big a checklist would this brave, foolish soul be looking at?

Just wondering.

Consoles only? Street Fighter only or would you include the various VS games SF characters appeared in?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Street_Fighter_video_games

Take that list with a grain of salt, as it's Wikipedia. Who knows if it's complete and/or accurate.

The list is really not as daunting as the Wikipedia list makes it looks-it includes all of the Japanese releases and all of the stuff released as parts of compilations etc. Seemingly the most annoying part of collecting Street Fighter (to me at least) would be getting all of the various Street Fighter II expansions for all of the consoles.

would this list acknowledge or disregard the 'RAINBOW COLLECTION' ? ^_^

I don't think it would be that bad at all. Especially with better versions out there (Like the Anniversary Collection on PS2), make the SNES and Genesis versions nice and cheap.

Heck, if you're just looking for every version of Street Fighter 2 and not ever cart that came out, Capcom Classics Collection 1 and 2 on PS2 will net you all of them except for regular Super Street Fighter 2 and Hyper Street Fighter 2.

Then for SF3, Double Impact on Dreamcast gets the first 2 versions, and Anniversary Collection gets you 3rd Strike and Hyper Street Fighter 2.

So thats what...5 games? I think the best US home version of Super Street Fighter 2 is on Street Fighter Collection for PSone.

Also, if you want Alpha, there's the collection for PS2 as well.

I have a feeling he wasn't talking about just buying compilations, which would be the quick and easy way out. I'm guessing he's talking about buying every Street Fighter release for every console.

I wouldn't count stuff like Rainbow Edition as they're merely hacks (and bad ones at that.)

Would you really count street fighters 2010 as a real game in the street fighters series since it has really nothing to do with street fighters.

I personally wouldn't...

You guess correctly.

And to help set some parameters: basically anything Capcom endorsed that has the Street Fighter name on it. So hacks don't count, but 2010 and X-Men vs. Street Fighter do.

The graphics look decent for the SMS, quite impressive, actually. The gameplay... Well, remember trying to play Mortal Kombat on the Genesis with 3 buttons and cussing a lot? It gets worse.

So there's no good home port of Mortal Kombat 1 eh?

back to Street Fighter, here's the checklist I have so far:

[_] Street Fighter 1 MS-DOS
[_] Fighting Street TG16/PC-Engine
[_] Street Fighter II World Warrior SNES
[_] Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting SNES
[X] Street Fighter II Champion Edition PC-Engine
[X] Street Fighter II Special Champion Edition Sega Genesis
[_] Super Street Fighter II SNES
[_] Super Street Fighter II Genesis
[_] Super Street Fighter II Turbo 3DO
[_] Super Street Fighter II Turbo MS-DOS
[_] Street Fighter Collection PSX
[_] Street Fighter Collection Saturn
[_] Street Fighter Collection 2 PSX
[_] Street Fighter Collection 2 Saturn

.... Ummmm.... I'm getting lost past this point. I think all the EX games are for Playstation, all the Alphas are for Saturn, everything else is on the Dreamcast... right?

I don't have a checklist or anything, but I did just sell SF Alpha 3 for the PS1, so Alpha isn't Saturn only.

Oh, yeah, that's right. There was also a version of the original Alpha on the SNES if I remember, although I've heard its terrible.

Yes, it's Alpha 2 and there's no reason to bother with it.

Come to that, you'll get a lot of duplicates and mediocre ports if you buy EVERY edition of every Street Fighter game. I'd just stick to one version of each game.

[_] Street Fighter 1 MS-DOSI believe there's at least two versions of this game out there. I own the crappy puke-colored one. There's also several SFII / CE / Super ones (I own two). They're all different enough to count, but they're also usually shit squared since Capcom didn't create them. I wonder if there's any Japanese computer versions out there?

Fenris is right, the SNES version of Alpha 2 isn't worth anyone's time. Weird graphics, awful sound, off controls, and for some reason the game freezes for a few seconds before the round starts. You're better off with a disc-based port.

and for some reason the game freezes for a few seconds before the round starts.
Because it uses a SDD-1 chip to decompress the graphics.

... before every round? Even the middle round, when the graphics are supposed to be decompressed already? Why not do it BEFORE the fight?

Since you're listing SF1 on MSDOS and SF2CE for PC-Engine, besides the missing ones you mentioned, you're missing a boatload.... which I'm sure you're aware of. Not to mention the SMS port mentioned above.

Off the top of my head... I'm missing a bunch:

- SF2 on the Sharp X68000 computer (very good port)
- Super SF2 Turbo MS-DOS
- SF1 & SF2 on the Amiga computer (on floppies)
- SF2 Amiga CD32
- Super SF2 FM Towns Marty
- SF1 Commodore 64
- SF1 Atari ST
- SF1 ZX Spectrum

etc etc etc....

Then you get to the portables... all the ones on the gameboy, GBA, PSP

Then all the various copies on PS2, various compilation discs (Capcom Generations 5) PSX & Saturn, Xbox 1, Xbox 350, etc etc

Then how about the download only titles...

Not to mention all the arcade boards. You also have the special version of SF Alpha 3 for SEGA NAOMI which is different from the CPS2 version. There's also the special version of Super SF2 with the tournament link mode edition (They actually had this at my local arcade... which was owned by Capcom). Then you have the CPS Changer versions of the CPS1 games, etc etc etc...

Then if you want to count cross over titles that adds even more! Besides the obvious ones, how about the MVS and PCB versions of SNK vs Capcom Chaos. Then all the 3D versions of SF... goes on and on...

At one point I almost had every single official release of "Street Fighter" on every platform including computers, consoles, portables and arcade for US/JAPAN/EUROPE/South American regions... was just shy of about 5-8 items. It's a crap load of stuff (I think the wiki page that lists all the versions isn't even complete).... It's a bit of a ridiculous goal unless you're an ultra hardcore SF fan. If you were that hardcore, you'd probably be posting this question and hanging out more at shoryuken.com's forum instead. It's probably better to simply devote one's energy to get better at the game in terms of expressing your enthusiasm for the franchise imho lol.

Yeah, I think the OP is all about the ass as well as the gems. Like the 2600 port of MS Pac Man we all keep next to the NES version and the GBA version just to show how it's changed, where it was better when. Eh, I'm all for it. Get em all, Dantes, and point-n-laugh and smile and play to your hearts content!

Yeah, what Sunnyvale said.

Though I'm thinking of going with Kid Fenris' suggestion, as lately I don't really like fighters much (http://jispylicious.wordpress.com/2011/11/19/a-fighting-game-ramble/). Then again though, differences between ports is actually what got me thinking this--shortly after writing that blog post, I read an article that claimed the Capcom Classics Collection version of Super Turbo has a problem with dropping inputs, and I assume the other versions of SFII on those collections do as well, and when I played Champion Edition on either the Genesis or the PC Engine I didn't have near as many problems despite being stuck with an inferior controller.

If I only wanted to own the definitive versions, I'd just go for the arcade boards, though that might be a project in itself.
