If you had to play for your life - against an unknown opponent - which game would you choose (of the more famous, classic arcade games)?

Write something here and if you have a moment, please click on your response on the poll on my blog. I have listed 16 of the most popular games.

Just wondering what everyone thinks they are good at. I was at college when Pac-Man ruled and yet I could never make my quarter last for too long. I was okay at Track & Field, but some folks ran right by me. If I had to choose, I'd choose Galaga. Win or die.

Make your choice on the poll...

While it's a very finite game to be good at - Dragon's Lair, barring any flaky hardware issues with a real Laserdisc setup I can do a run-through without any major issues. Put me in front of a much more reliable Daphne emulated setup and I can guarantee flawless victory.

The only person that I'd be scared of facing in a game of Dragon's Lair FOR MY LIFE is DP Forum member and 1st to the top of the online Dragon's Lair leaderboard - Mingy Jongo. ;)

Klax. Heads up, a single game, I'll be in the top five of pretty much any group, time after time. I can also usually run the table on Gyruss with a properly responsive joystick.

It would definitely be Tapper/Root Beer Tapper for me.

I'm probably best at "insert coin to continue" I seem to win that one quite often.

Centipede for me. I'm still a bajillion points below the world record holders, but I think I'm not half bad for your typical player.

Almost anything on the Playchoice 10. If it was at Castlevania, Super Mario Bros. 3, Mega Man 3, or Ninja Gaiden 2, then I'd dominate.

Unfortunately, when it comes to true classic games, while I'm really good at them, I probably wouldn't be challenged by someone who isn't also equally as good. If it was a true classic, then I'd say Pac Man would be my best hope for survival, and I'm not even that great at it. I'd say Bubble Bobble but that can't be considered a true classic arcade game can it?

likewise for myself…

I enjoy Centipede arcade, and score decent at it, but nowhere near elite levels LOL
also considering I have my hands crossed, as I use the trak-ball with my left hand and fire with my right hand…

Started to really get good at Millipede, Time Pilot, and both Jousts, but I'll be damned if I'm anywhere near world records.

Also Kupo, you go and list Playchoice 10 cabs, then ask if Bubble Bobble falls into the mold of true classic arcade game. One smack behind the head for you for asking that, of course it does.

On the list, Galaga. However, I'd have to say the game in my basement is my all-time best.

All the games are classic, but a true classic would mean one of the very first so couldn't really say Playchoice or Bubble Bobble falls under that. The start of the second paragraph I was basically saying Playchoice 10 was also not a true classic like Pac Man so that would have been my choice if there was a certain age group of classic games that we had to choose, but if it was any classic game then I'd choose Playchoice 10 games.

Punch-Out and Super Punch-Out.

Super Punch-Out especially because a lot of people don't realize you have to pull up on the stick to duck.

Tournament Arkanoid. Or actually any version or arkanoid with the knob/paddle and not a joystick. HUGE differance. But I do own a tournament arkanoid machine and I can kick ass!

Not to be arrogant, but...

I could walk through the entire DP crew (sans one or two of you, maybe...) in the original Street Fighter II. Not Championship, with the Honda walkin n punchin n Ken n Ryu fly halfway cross the screen every dragon punch shit. But the first orange n yeller cab. And I could thump most of ya with Zangief. Never using the spinning piledriver... Cause he was the fucking man in the original arcade cabinet. Hence my constant bitching about the console ports. Find one that didn't rob him of critical priority or lengthen the screen, putting his attrition tactics at half-mast. Please, find me one... As I don't have room for a cab :(

I'm not sure which game I'm best at, however if I had to face someone competitively I suppose mine pick would be Smash T.V.. I never thought much of it BITD, but I never knew anyone else who could end the game on a single credit. Talking with gamers online in recent years and it seems it's something of an achievement to be able to dominate Smash' on just one quarter, so odds would be in my favor against an unknown opponent.

Of the games listed on the poll in the link.. Mine would be Dig dug.

I gotta go with Time Pilot. Loved that shit when I was a kid and it was the ONLY reason I bought Konami Arcade Classics for the PS1! Pure impulse buy when I saw it.

Since you said arcade game...

If my life was on the line, I'd definitely go with a pinball machine. While it isn't my favorite machine, the one that I seem to be the best at is Whirlwind. I can regularly put up more than 10 million on my machine, while most other people that I know -- even top tournament players -- don't hit numbers that high on it. No idea why I seem to have an edge on that game, but that's it.

Regular arcade games that I have thought that I was good at in the past -- Ms. Pac-Man, Galaxian, etc -- I go and see what other players have done and I realize I'm not really good at all.

If you check my avatar pic closely, you'll see me at #1 on Xevious, set at GameWorks Las Vegas in summer '07. Though judging from the other scores, it wasnt much of a battle. W/ the acqusition of my own Xevious cab, my score regularly reaches 200+ K, though nowhere near Twin Galaxies records. I have to set it to competition soon & try it out.

Also, when I saw Mario Bros (the 1st one, not Super) at our grocery store back in 84(?), I told myself "I'm going to get good at that game." So starting w/ no experience in it whatsoever, I can get to the icicle level, or at least the invisible coin phase every time. Back when our work had a DK/DKjr/MB 3-in-1 machine, a co-worker & I traded off high scores. IIRC his last high score couldve gone on Twin Galaxies, before they removed the machine :(.

On your list there, I wouldnt bet my life on ANY of them, but if I had to choose- Dig Dug.

I'm not too bad at that either.. looking at your nick did you ever play at Golfland arcade (by Valco mall) in Sunnyvale? That's where I cut my teeth playing that game and championship edition all throughout college playing against crazy players. :) Then on my way home to Guam during summers and christmases I'd stop in Japan for a while and play the japanese players there in the big arcades. So I had a lot of playtime against top guys. Been a couple years though.. and I agree though the series lost me in it's later iterations.

As far as what game I'm good at.. I'm pretty good at most all classic arcade games except for Asteroids. But I'd say SPACE INVADERS. I recently read an article about some guy breaking the record in Space Invaders (http://kotaku.com/space-invaders/) and all I could think was.. "if I wanted to I could match/beat that" :p But I don't want to LOL (way too much effort to play for that long)

It amazes me as to what some people consider "classic arcade" games are.

Thanks. We just finished it about a month ago. Here's a pic of what it looked like when we were house hunting.

Time Pilot for me. I own one of them and when I am playing regular I can get a pretty decent score.

My pick would probably be one of those Black Jack porno games. Barring that, Operation Wolf.
