So Voltron was released on the PSN (and maybe the xbawks, not sure) and its actually a pretty decent action game, it has some run around and blow crap up levels, fun psuedo turn based robeast battles and a robotron inspired shooter styled level, for 10$ its a pretty fun game overall.

Is it based on the original series or the current "Voltron Force" Nicktoons series?

It's also on the 360. I played the demo and found it pretty tedius. It's probably better when playing when a full set of lions. The price isn't bad but I'm going to wait for a sale before snagging it. And weirdly enough, this happens to be the very first Voltron video game ever made.

nope, there was a voltron c 64 game, it was terrible, but existed. voltron is also a playable charecter in some of the super robot games

And there is also a Voltron iphone game, which this new game is actually quite similar to in many ways, at least it seemed that way from the XBLA demo.
Of course, I liked the iphone one enough to beat it, so...

While it's great that they used the Lion Force Voltron, the reviews are pretty bad. Has clips from the show in it as well.

There's a current Voltron series? I just remember some 3D Voltron series from the late 90's trying to bring back the franchise.

Didn't finish the demo before I turned it off. This game is pretty terrible.

That makes my inner 10 year old quite happy!

Yeah, it's supposedly a continuation, but it doesn't really feel like the original at all beyond the basic "robot lions forming giant robot" aspect. There are some interesting concepts, like any lion being able to form the body to make specialized versions of Voltron, but they've also got "annoying kid sidekicks" syndrome.

Gave this a download Saturday night. My jaw dropped when I saw it was a 1.1 GB file. What's possibly in this game that takes up so much room?
When I fired it up, it was like I was transported back to the early 90's. First thing I'm greeted with after the obligatory video of the Voltron TV show opening is a video from an episode to get the first mission going. "Uh oh..." I thought. When I got to the game I was treated to a Voltron-skinned version of Assault Heroes. You move your lion with the left stick, the right stick fired in any direction. Had some special moves to either pounce on enemies or charge and that was it. Even having your lion damaged to the brink of deactivation caused an Assault Heroes-esque ejection of your pilot to fend for themselves while the vehicle repaired itself.
Only difference: Assault Heroes did it better.
After playing that, I'm not interested in what the other play modes are like. I didn't like games that used video to try and grease you up for a mediocre game then and I still don't like it now.

Now if only it were Beast King Go-Lion instead of Voltron.

I played the demo, have to say I am quite sad that after 30 years of waiting for a Voltron VG this mess was what was produced.
If they can throw out 3 semi-decent transformer games, why oh why can't someone pick up this franchise and make a decent release?
:(

Most likely the multitude of video clips they included? The game did look like a lousy game that should have been released on PC or PS1 back then.

:(The company that owns the rights to Voltron in the US has been notorious with releasing way overpriced merchandise, often that nobody wants. Their DVD releases left much to be desired.

you mean the shitty reskinned call of duty bullshit they released?
I thought it was a fun actiony game that fit the theme of voltron, i'd have liked more weapons, but its by no means awfull.
the later space stages and robeast fights are alot of fun, I never played the assualt heroes game though.

Yes...yes it is.
Considering they have had 30 years to come up with something as Jawsum as Voltron was and could have had it sell for a 60$ full retail game, I believe it could have been 10X what any transformer game was. And those were just 'playable' to me.
Imagine having to go on-line with 4 other people to actually form Voltron? Or something of that nature? Their was endless possibilities for the spin it could have taken. Not some FMV hack and slash for 10 bucks downloadable only.

Let's use this thread to try and conceptualize a good Voltron game.
How about something on the Sandbox side? You get a decent sized Planet Arus to run around, a faraway Planet Doom, and some space between them. You play as the pilots and have to find the lions, figure out the keys, and so on. It could have random attacks on the planet that come up on your radar or whatever that you can fly over and take care of.

Ya know what, most eighties cartoons never had good video games (Rescue Rangers, Ducktales, TMNT and G.I. Joe are the only ones I know of that did)
I'd like to see a good He-Man game, preferably a one-on-one fighting game where you get to play as Hordak, and he can use extra-gory finishing moves. And in his ending he finds out She-Ra is that girl he kidnapped and raised as his own daughter and it drives him positively nuts. Then he makes out with Shadow Weaver and conquers the universe.
Or how about Adventures of the Gummi Bears as a turn based strategy game? Or heck, a Smurfs game where you play as Gargamel?

As a kid and later as a programmer, I always tried to conceptualize my favorate "brands" as games, and unfortunately, voltron transformers and heman are difficult to come up with amazingly good game concepts. It is dificult to make a good action game based on a series without a good amount of random enemies, and such, the best I could come up with has already been done, with turn based games like super robot wars (mainly thinking transformers here), I mean you could make a game where you beat up seekers all day (seekers = starscream repaint drones) and this was done and done poorly on the Ps2), the bastardization of transformers as a shitty call of duty clone made me very sad (sadder too that it is popular with that kind of gamer, bleh) . I would love to see a better verison of the cell phone turn based game done in a full fledge tf game, that has promise more so over the awful COD reskin genre ever could do justice for the transformer brand.

80's cartoons don't make for good video games. The reason I think is the shows did have action and such, but they also focused on characters mainly. That's why they were so popular. There needs to be a story in the game, not just action, action, action. Those series would be better served by a Zelda-like game where you went around solving puzzles. 90% of Voltron was not of them in the lions or as Voltron. Same for shows like Transformers, where Autobot vs. Decepticon fights were actually only a couple minutes of each episode.

I've hear almost nothing but negative reviews for this game. That means a sale can't be too far behind.

Well if you watched (CGR) review of it mark like it i guess because of it's arcade style game play.
