This can't bode well for an already struggling Nintendo or it's future titles. Sad day in gaming...

If Nintendo is getting bashed as much as it does for no third party support, what'll happen when it has even worse first party support than it does now?
Miyamoto is really all Nintendo had going for it. Truly one of the best.

From what he said in the interview, Miyamoto will still work with Nintendo, and has trained the younger generation, and wants to focus on things that don't eat up so much time, wants to work with the younger guys...
If he's put in any type of advisory role, I think Nintendo might just salvage most of what he had to offer, and maybe even get a 'fresher' Miyamoto.
Or maybe him saying all that was just a way not to piss on Nintendo's stock as he left.

It sounds like good news to me.
He's going to retire from his supervisory role and start creating his own projects again.

Miyamoto had already stepped down from any role of great significance since like... Pikmin. Anybody thinking that he's the one that deserves the credit for the Mario, Zelda, etc. games since then is misinformed. Miyamoto's role has basically been "Yeah, that's good" when a team shows him their work.

If his management style is anything like his interview style, he probably just gave them baffling, vague comments on their work and then smiled and laughed.

They own Monolith which just came out with Xenoblade and now they are working on BK3 on Wii-U. Shiggy has not been developing at nintendo for almost a decade and been doing amazing things.
They have people who can take over and have for a long time.
People don't talk about Captain Rainbow,Giftpia,Chibi Robo enough even though they were some new IP's Not to mention Battalian wars. They have the strongest first part support of anyone.

I can call you on this one. While Nintendo has been releasing the garbage shovelware Wii "insert generic name here" titles, Sony has released a bunch of Singstar garbage as first party support. MLB The Show comes out every year, and atleast for baseball fans this one is quality. Then the massive amount of quality first party content that's been released. And digital releases as well?
Microsoft might not have the best first party support, but atleast a decent amount of it is quality. Gears of War is third party, but may as well be called first party since it's never jumping consoles outside of the first game being on PC. It's also Microsoft funded.
How about that 3DS support. Did you like all those amazing "new" games while waiting eight months for Super Mario 3D Land. Good, because after Mario Kart 7 you're probably not going to get another good first party game for over a year. Kid Icarus is all hype I'm sure.

I haven't really been following the 3DS but I remember that the Kid Icarus vid was THE THING when the system was announced and I was expecting it to be a launch title or a near-launch title. Instead it has been in development for how long?
It seems a bit unusual that they would take so long in between hyping a game as if it was a flagship title and then actually releasing it, especially when it isn't exactly a household name. I could understand if they did something like that with a brand new Zelda game, but Kid Icarus?

Wow, you went to wikipedia and copied down a list. Way to go.

LOL No doubt.
I'm glad he's "stepping down", maybe we'll see some fresh stuff from him again.

If Nintendo is in any sort of trouble, it's because they're snubbing "garage" developers, where IMO most of the real innovation is happening these days. It's not because Dear Old Shiggy is easing himself into a well-deserved retirement.
The guy doesn't carry himself around like a one-of-a-kind avatarian genius, in a world where there can be only one god in human flesh at a time, born under certain stars and destined to lead the tech company of the future through their unique insight and irascibility. Shiggy never comes off as a Steve Jobs, in other words - and it sounds like he's proved that by training others to do what he does. Nintendo will be good at what they've always been good at, whether he's there or not.
Nintendo is on damage control and claims his initial comments were misunderstood and are not reflective of what he'll be doing at Nintendo. Meaning, he'll still be doing whatever it is he's doing now.
Miyamoto at the helm of small projects, whatever that means to Nintendo, would've been the most exciting news to come out of that company in 15-20 years. He was one of the best, but his best stuff came out in the '80s and early '90s when he was closer to the development process.

I don't know if this is good or bad; I'd like to see Nintendo thrive; but I'd also like to see miyamoto do his own projects. Hmmm.

Miyamoto is a programmer at heart, let him be happy just doing that. He's likely tired of the business side, and the crap he has to put up with. Especially in a Japanese business environment, a creative guy like that doesn't belong in the board room.

I do wonder how small is a small project. If he's going off to make Nintendo equivalents of Angry Birds, this is probably not good news.

Angry Birds is an overwhelming success and a fun game to play. How would that be bad for Nintendo or for gamers?

People are used to a bit more substance than that, and Nintendo isn't in the $0.99 game business, so I imagine 'small' would mean something along the lines of Mario vs DK or Picross or something. Miyamoto has always preferred developing games by experimenting with gameplay rather than just crafting a new game from an existing blueprint.

Except as it stands Miyamoto's direct influence over the current batch of Nintendo games is limited at best. We can argue over just how limited but I think we all know he's no longer the driving force. So whether he stays or goes, there probably won't be much of a change for the blockbuster titles. At least this way he can flex his muscle a little bit with some personal projects, however tiny. His absence from the current Zeldas and Marios is unlikely to have a discernible impact.

well it has to happen at some point. the fact that he is staying on and helping the young guys is awesome get them trained up for when he has to leave. a big part of the problem for nintendo and gaming in general is a love of casual games and tablets and smartphones.
that and they mishandled the 3DS launch

Much like Apple has continued to be successful with the death of Steve Jobs and Microsoft has continued to be successful with the stepping down of Bill Gates, Nintendo will continue to be an awesome first party game/franchise maker without Miyamoto. Miyamoto deserves to do whatever he likes after all the years he has put in for Nintendo.
On a side note, it would be funny if he went to work for Microsoft or Sony. I know that would never really happen but think what an awesome surprise moment it could make at one of their E3 press conferences.
