OK, like many people on this forum here I'm a huge fan of the legendary Pac Man; he's an iconic video game hero to millions out there and his famous action packed arcade games from the 1980's are still fun and addictive as ever. So my question is why in the world would Namco release a grand sequel on the then powerful 16-bit machines and turn it into a boring, lame, almost unplayable nightmare that is Pac Man 2! I didn't like this one as a kid and I decided to give it another chance but it was just so bad and I hate how I'm even really playing the game at all. There are times when I'm holding the controller up to the camera cause I'm not doing anything! So is this the worst sequel of all time or do you have other picks for the worst ever sequel?
My video of Pac Man 2 genesis:

Sequel to Pac-Man was Ms. Pac-Man.
But, I loved Pac-Man 2 on SNES, played it many times. Think I even completed it.
As for sequels? Too many bad ones nowadays on PS3, Wii, 360 and wotnot.

I was going to say the same thing but wasn't it unauthorized? Still...there were a lot of of other Pac-Man sequels before Pac-Man 2 on the Genesis.

I never thought Pac-Man 2 was spectacular or anything, but wouldn't call it the worst. Heck, I'd even place it above Pac & Pal, which I could never find enjoyment in.

Well, I'll say this about Pac-Man 2, any time that we ever sold that game to a customer at Funcoland (at the customer's request) it would come with a full explanation that it was not the traditional arcade game that the customer assumed that it was (even though that game is in fact featured in a portion of the game).
90% of the time, after getting that news the game would go right back in the drawer and no sale would be made.

I like Pac-Man 2, I can't see much wrong with the game. Might as well mention Zelda II and Castlevania II since those will come up anyway, and they are bad compared to the first games in the series.

Zelda II a bad game? Zelda II is fuckin' fantastic man.
I'm just gonna claim Super Pitfall as the sequel to Pitfall 2 and declare IT the worst sequel ever.

Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure for the SNES tongued major league balls IMO.It couldn't have been worse than the 32X version. That game had the worst frame rate ever. It's the only game I can think of that I felt was unplayable because of the frame rate. B.O.B. for Genesis comes in at a close second for game breaking frame rate.

I hated both of them. I was most disappointed when I bought Baseball Stars II for NES, got it home, and quickly realized they stripped most of the customization features out of the game compared to the original.

I could see why some people could like it but I'm just not a very big fan of uninteractive video games in general.

Pac-Man 2 is very interactive. You can interact with damn near everything on the screen!
I think you're getting "uninteractive" confused with "don't directly control the main character."

Power Punch II for the Nes. Take one of the best boxing games ever then crap on it.
Result...Power Punch II
Dragon's Lair 3D was a complete piece of crap, I remember forcing myself through the game and was relieved when Dirk's relatively short adventure finally ended.
As for Pac-Man 2, I remember it being one of the few games I rented from Blockbuster that I actually beat. At first I didn't like the game, but ended up getting into it once I got over not being able to control Pac and enjoyed it for the clever adventure game it was.

It's weird though because Namco called it Pac Man 2 despite there being other games in series and maybe that's why I have such a huge issue with the game.

Yeah, I would be honest like that too just to warn people that's it's not the same game. The ones that did buy it often returned it back too.

They aren't bad, just different.
Anyway, I played and loved Wizards & Warriors, and was very excited to hear about the sequel when I heard one was coming so I waited and waited, and finally, I had it, Ironsword: Wizards & Warriors 2, in all it's Fabio adorned glory. Pop it in to the NES and bam, can't stand it. I'm not saying it was necessarily a bad game, just for me, it was one of the worst sequels ever.

I'm going to throw Ghoul Patrol into the bonfire.
It was never intended to be a sequel to ZAMN and had Zeke & Julie thrown in at the last minute.

In terms of being a disappointment compared to the earlier games, there's only one answer: Contra Force. I know it's technically not a real sequel, and it was supposed to be a completely unrelated game called Arc Hound; however, it's still just plain awful. Konami slapped the Contra name on it and released it in North America, so it counts for me. SO MUCH SLOWDOWN.
Purely in terms of quality game play, I can't imagine any sequel being worse than Cheetahmen II.

You're either trolling or not very bright.
Both of those were very good, well made games. On every technical level they were very well made and played very well.
Objectively Knuckles Chaotix is just as well made as Sonic 3/Sonic & Knuckles. Mortal Kombat III was still very good. I enjoy MK2 more as well. My personal fave was MK3U. If you want worst as in was actually bad. Mortal Kombat 4. Sonic 2006.
Strider II for Genesis/MD. The game that basically fails at everything that a game should do.
God I don't want to live on this planet anymore. Strider II was one one system only. Playstation and was a 3d game. Strider on Genesis/SMS/NES
And is considered to be a classic.

Strider Returns was turrible. Also, Rise 2, because any sequel to a game as bad as Rise of the Robots has to enter this discussion, even though it was admittedly not as bad as its predecessor

I would like to incite a flame war by saying Donkey Kong Country 3. Before I get maimed, I would like to explain that I do, in fact, adore this game. The reason I find it to be a terrible sequel is that it is such an inferior game in comparison to it's immediate predecessor. DKC2 is one of the greatest games ever. Amazing music, amazing graphics, amazing gameplay, amazing levels, etc. Donkey Kong Country 3 just feels so rushed, simple and plain. The music and graphics sound and look phoned in and the difficulty is just a huge crash from the previous franchise installment.
OH WAIT!
DONKEY KONG 64. There we go. A huge disaster.

The game I'm referring to is Strider 2 for the Genesis/MD it was also known as Journey from Darkness: Strider Returns. It not the same game as Strider 2 for the Playstation. They are completely different games. Journey from Darkness is one of the worst games out there. Capcom had almost nothing to do with its development; it was developed by Tiertex and published by U.S. Gold. The whole thing was just the botched result of an attempt to cash in on a well known franchise, and is thus one of the worst (if not THE worst) sequels out there.

I don't think you need to worry about inciting a flame war over that one, heh. Most people seem to have far worse to say about DKC3 than you.
I do think DKC3 is inferior to DKC2, but I don't understand why people think DKC3 is so different or so worse. It's basically the same concept repeated. The controls are basically identical and the level design is comparable, and that's what's important. I don't know how you could see the graphics as phoned in. They're very detailed and I can think of plenty of sections that I think are every bit as impressive as what's in DKC2 if not more so (I especially like the swimming backgrounds). The real difference in graphics is that DKC3 is sillier and more cartoon-y than DKC2 (compare the bees, for example). The problem with the music was that Dave Wise wasn't involved. I'm sure the other composers tried, but they're just not as talented as Wise. The difficulty is a step down from DKC2, but not in a way that I find detrimental. It's still a healthy challenge, and it's still WAY more difficult than the first DKC, which people love in spite of its low difficulty (same goes for lots of highly regarded games).

I actually did like Fischer's work a lot, the main problem looking at her tracks seemed to be that it was usually more looped than Wise's work.
Also I'm pretty sure Wise composed at least a few tracks in the game, unless there's something I don't know.
Aussie2B
12-28-2011, 05:05 AM
Ah, you're right, he did. Fischer did the majority, though. For some reason I was thinking that there were other composers involved, but I guess I must have confused it with the first DKC, which has three composers. I think there are a few decent tracks in DKC3, but overall the soundtrack doesn't do much for me. As opposed to DKC2 where I love pretty much every single track.
The GBA version of DKC3 has an all new soundtrack composed fully by Wise, though. I still have to check that out.

Final Fantasy 10-2 is better than Final Fantasy 10. The storyline might be terrible, but hey, so was FF10's storyline. The gameplay is nothing short of amazing.
