A few months before it's due to arrive in the U.S., Sony's PlayStation Vita, successor to the PlayStation Portable, has been released in Japan. Says the linked Associated Press article: "For the Tokyo-based electronics and entertainment giant, the Vita is the biggest product launch since the PlayStation 3 console five years ago. It's also accompanied by two dozen software products — the largest number of launch titles in PlayStation history. The Vita has front and back cameras, a touchscreen in front, a touch pad on the back and two knob-like joysticks. It will enable gamers to play against each other using PlayStation 3 consoles over the Internet-based PlayStation Network, a system that was hit with a massive hacking attack earlier this year."http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png (http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fgames.slashdot.org%2Fsto ry%2F11%2F12%2F18%2F073200%2Fsonys-next-generation-portable-is-out-in-japan%3Futm_source%3Dslashdot%26utm_medium%3Dfaceb ook) http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png (http://twitter.com/home?status=Sony's+Next-Generation+Portable+Is+Out%2C+In+Japan%3A+http%3A% 2F%2Fbit.ly%2Frtf2Jy)

So far so good. Much better quality than my launch day PSP with 4 dead pixels. Though I bought into launch day hype. Said I wasn't going to but there was that wi-fi model sitting there...

As long as a new Gran Turismo doesn't take 5 years to come out I'll be happy. And the online store with cheap digital downloads I hope. Don't like that I'll have to swap out memory cards to switch between my US and Japanese PlayStation accounts though.

Planning on giving it some custom detailing with that Tamiya XF-85?

So you got Uncharted. Looks like the best launch title in my opinion.

I'll pick this up eventually.

I'm borderline on Vita. Had a launch PSP, sold it, re-bought it a year or so later, but it has generally collected a lot of dust through the years (I only really played it on airplane trips).

That said, I said I wouldn't buy a 3DS and look at what happened there... So if I can budget it and Feb. 22 rolls around, I just might. We'll see...

Vita is the most interesting hardware I've seen in a while, but the games aren't that appealing to me at this point. I hope we get to see a lot of new games and ideas that really take advantage of that hardware or it will be a wasted opportunity in my eyes.

I think it's bullshit you can't play PSone games from the PSN store. I wanted to play Final Fantasy VII on it.

From what I read, that's just a Japan thing and it's hoped to be just temporary. I haven't seen any clarifications from their North American division on what we can expect to work at launch (Although their faq stated a month or two ago that it will be compatible with all PSP compatible downloads). I imagine we'll be able to enjoy PSOne downloads on this in due course (And all PSP arcade games, PSP Minis, and PSN uploads of retail games). Maybe even at launch for North America if they can improve their emulator quick enough.

You won't have to...

They've since clarified that the reality is you'll have to reset the system to factory settings each time you want to switch between PSN accounts. No purchasing two Vita memory cards for easy swapping between two accounts like we were led to believe was possible a week or two ago. So it's going to operate exactly how multiple PSN account holders feared it was going to.

They've mentioned several times that it would not be available at launch but will be available in a future update. More than likely PSX titles are going to be playable by the time it's released in the west.

The only launch title that really interests me is Katamari, and do I really want to play yet another Katamari? Well, yeah, I do, but I'm probably going to wait a bit.

PlayStation Suite, on the other hand, has me really interested. It's (hopefully) going to be XBLIG done right. I'm in the beta, and can't say much more than that. I'm currently working on an 8-bit RPG engine for Windows Phone 7/XBLIG, but I'd rather be working on a handheld with buttons.

I think the price is right. It's merciful in comparison to smartphone hardware. If it had HDMI out, I'd be sold, but as it is, I'm on the fence.

I was going to buy a 3DS, but then Mega Man Legends 3 was cancelled, and that was all I really cared about on the platform. Vita lineup looks more interesting, but not by a lot.
