Bill Currie writes "After many years, QuakeForge 0.6.0 has finally been released, just in time for the 12th anniversary of the release of the Quake source code. Happy birthday, GPL Quake. Merry Christmas, Quake fans." The release page shows a few 0.5.99 beta releases made starting earlier this month, the first since 2004. Sometime in that void of time development moved to git, and there has quite a bit of work going on in the main tree.http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png (http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fgames.slashdot.org%2Fsto ry%2F11%2F12%2F21%2F1336208%2Fquakeforge-060-released-in-time-for-christmas%3Futm_source%3Dslashdot%26utm_medium%3Df acebook) http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png (http://twitter.com/home?status=QuakeForge+0.6.0+Released+In+Time+For+ Christmas%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2Fvqgrm5)

Okay, I've looked at the site and still don't understand what this is or why I should care.

1: Get the data files from old Quake CDs
2: Stick them somewhere with these files
3: Enjoy Quake, upscaled, with fancy graphics filters, at the resolution you want, in the operating system of your choice.

Aha. I still don't get why this is news, though.
I've already done all that with GLQuake and Tenebrae.
That was years ago.

Don't forget darkplaces, which is excellent. I'm interested to learn more about this QuakeForge item all the same.
