But it's getting close -- game translator GlitterBerri (http://www.glitterberri.com/uncategorized/the-real-zelda-timeline/) used the above video of the Hyrule Historia, a history book edited by Zelda developer Eiji Aonuma, to create the below timeline of events throughout Zelda's history. This is the closest we've seen to an official timeline, but it may yet be tweaked. Enjoy your speculation:

Might as well put together a timeline for Tetris and Bejeweled for all that crap is worth. :p

It turns on the geeks, so I bet this book sells very well.

Meh, I don't get off about the Zelda timeline theories... especially since it seems to change with each new release. All I care about is that it's a damn fine game series and I leave it at that.
I'm just hoping we see an English language release of this book, cause I'm really keen on seeing some of the dev art.

Damn, I'm pissed off that I missed the chance to get that book. :( I was aware of its release and when I originally checked, it wasn't yet added to Play-Asia. And now it's too late, the book is already quite hard to find.

What I don't understand is the whole "Link is defeated in Ocarina of Time" bit.

Uh... I thought that after Ocarina of Time, it split off into "Child Timeline" and "Adult Timelime".

Is there a third ending to Ocarina of Time when you lose to Gannon or something?

Yep, it's called "Game Over". So that timeline split is what happens if you don't press "Yes" at the "Continue playing?" screen in Ocarina of Time.

Interestingly, the timeline split with Link dying in Ocarina of Time has the best overall outcome... :P

The entire Zelda fandom has been collectively shitting itself, none stop, since that book dropped. It's kinda funny.

I'm just waiting for a new Zelda game to come out and prove that everything took place in a computer simulation, and each game was just the system resetting itself. There was only one Link or Zelda that ever existed. It's almost what happened in Link's Awakening when the world destroyed itself, it turned out the whole island never really existed.

There's no such thing in Ocarina of Time. The game ends with the final sepia screen shot of Link as a child returning to Zelda as a child. All you can possibly do is reset the console.

AFAIK, I distinctly remember defeating Ganon at the end of Ocarina of Time. What was all that partying after that all about, then?

Hey, do something for me, okay?
Boot up your copy of the game.
Kill Link.
Watch the words 'Game Over' appear on the screen.
Come back here and admit you were wrong.

Cocky. That doesn't explain how Link comes back in A Link To The Past.

This is all kinds of FUBAR'd, I don't see why anyone should even try to link together all of the games at this point. You're better off trying to just link the 2D ones and the newer Cel-Shaded 3D ones like Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass together. Ocarina of Time is just fuck-all confusing to the whole plot.

Zelda is really more like an RPG series in that the different installments don't really have to do with each other very much. Why not keep it that way?

I don't recall posting that it did.
I also don't recall that being part of my point.

I can't find it at the moment, but there was a screen shot from the book that had all version of Link in it, including the CD-i version. I'll see if I can scrounge it up.

Speaking of books on Zelda, French publisher IG Magazine released a special issue for the series' 25th anniversary. If you're a fan at all, I highly recommend it. 240 pages with barely any ads. If you wish to order it, it costs 9.50 euros plus shipping, and it's worth every penny. You can order here: http://www.editionspixnlove.com/Tous-nos-ouvrages/IG-Mag-HS-2-Special-Zelda/flypage.tpl.html

Here are a few pics I snapped of my copy:
