Next month's Ultimate Gamers Expo has been canceled, as I learned this morning in a press release for the Phantom not-really-console. This isn't exactly a shocking development, as there was literally no prerelease hype (I don't recall a single print or website article about it), and the industry doesn't have the energy or money to invest in a second expo just three months after E3. Did anyone here plan on going?

Yeah that's rather unsurprising, hm?

Funny coincidence too that this happens on the same day that the GAME JAM publicity begins at www.phillyclassic.com ... coincidence? Or IS IT?!

</conspiracy>

The numbers they were expecting were outrageous too - 100,000 attendees, that's far far more than E3 ever has and THAT is crowded with three times as much space!

To answer the question though... no, I wasn't planning on going.

I inquired about going, but it happens to take place during Quakecon (aug. 14-17), and they wanted to charge me $2600 for the smallest booth ($26/square foot times 10' by 10')

Well phooey. I was going to go since it was after CGE and local. I wanted to see the mysterious new "ultimate gaming system" and report back on the Phantom, but I guess it was not meant to be.

I'm not terribly surprised and really not all that dissapointed, though.

the UGE was totally redundant. There's more than enough hype machines and media coverage for games and gamers as it is. I would have expected this event (had it survived) to turn into one of those "one weekend only" $ale of the $entury type deals where they sell crap. Not that I wouldn't mind going, however :)
