theodp writes "In the world of virtual goods, reports GeekWire's Todd Bishop, it looks like there's no such thing as a Second Amendment. According to a forum post by an Epic Games community manager, a new policy will remove 'gun-like' items from Microsoft's Xbox Live Avatar Marketplace on January 1. The policy reportedly applies to accessories for the avatars that represent Xbox Live users, not to games themselves, and owners of virtual weaponry like the Gears of War 3 Avatar Lancer purchased before the policy goes into effect will be permitted to continue to wield them."http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png (http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fgames.slashdot.org%2Fsto ry%2F11%2F12%2F26%2F2114229%2Fa-right-to-bear-virtual-arms%3Futm_source%3Dslashdot%26utm_medium%3Dfacebo ok) http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png (http://twitter.com/home?status=A+Right+To+Bear+Virtual+Arms%3F%3A+htt p%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2Fs8RLUu)

Probably just Microsoft trying to market the 360 as a family system again. It seems excessive, but then again, the same could be said for the concept of buying expensive things for your avatar.

skaar's had the same avatar for a long time. Also, speaking for this site only, not a video game or any other website, meseta is fake currency that we get for free and is only usable on said site.

I realize the meseta is basically junk. It's just I hear people frequently speak of how bad ass the avatar changes are, and skaar is sporting some of said changes. That's all.

Since when do you have to pay for an avatar here? It's still free as far as I can tell.

The avatar costs no meseta, the fancy name changes do. Not that I can confirm this, as I still have no fancy name change link in my meseta :(

From what I gather, the guns for GoW3 shouldn't have been put up in the first place for the avatar marketplace. And the same query came over my mind regarding the lightsabers too...

Then why do you keep referencing his avatar in relation to meseta?

So the other night I go to my kid brother's house. He's a gamer, been forever, but he don't play old games any more. We sat down, smoked some refers, and he fired up his 360 for some red-eyed L4D2. So I aked him to hand me the joystick. He just smirked and handed me he controller. He knew what I was getting at.

Is "joystick" a metaphor for something else? Maybe it's just me but it kind of sounds like you were coming on to him. I'm not sure if that was intentional or not.

That's why I won't let my male children watch that 'show'.

"I have this buddy of mine, we both got high and decided to go for some McDonalds. We both ordered a Big Mac with fries. When we sat down I asked him to pass me some mayonnaise. He just smirked and passed me some mayonnaise. He knew what I was getting at."
What it sounds like;
"I have this buddy of mine, we both got high and decided to go for some McDonalds. We both ordered a Big Mac with fries. When we sat down I asked him to pass me some mayonnaise. He just smirked and passed me some mayonnaise. He knew what I was getting at. I wanted his penis inside me."
I don't know what else the point of that story was, it seemed like there was more to it than just passing a controller for some reason. Was that just me? Maybe I'm just missing what he was getting at, apparently it was something important and meaningful.

We have official confirmation, it seems:
http://www.windowsobserver.com/2011/12/27/xbox-live-avatar-marketplace-gun-restrictions-confirmed-by-microsoft/
Xbox LIVE Marketplace has updated its policies to provide further clarity for third-party publishers submitting content for approval. This includes details about weapons such as firearms. Xbox LIVE has always reserved the right to reject or expire from the marketplace any type of weapon prop content that is deemed unsuitable for its general audience. Because the Xbox LIVE Marketplace is accessible to members of all ages, it is important our policies clearly address what content is available to all. This policy provides additional clarity to publishers in advance of the content review process.
So kids can play with guns, they just can't look at them. Got it.

Why do I get the feeling that the Halo energy sword prop will never be considered unsuitable and removed from the avatar marketplace.

Maybe because it was part of yesterday's xmas one day deal. If they start removing energy swords and lightsabers then it's only a matter of time before they remove baseball bats and broom sticks. I mean, it's not like you couldn't beat someone down with a broom stick, although it would probably break midway thru the assault. But ultimately I agree with skaar:
I'm sure they're doing it to make it a more family/kid friendly system.

I guess if you're just here to mess around, this is just fine.
But I thought we were here to discuss videogames, not run a stupidity contest.
Edit - Looks like I killed things judging by the lack of responses. That wasn't my intention if this is how people want this forum to be like, although I'd personally rather see things stick closer to the subject of this board.
