I'm looking to buy a ps1 modchip so i can play my imports and english patched burns without having to do any swap BS. What is the best place to order one in terms of price and reliability? I have a scph-5001 model

In Canada I've gotten a few from modchips.ca

In my experience, about one out of three PS1's (old style housing) are already modchipped. If you're patient and do a bit of searching, you can probably get one for next to nothing already modded. Of course, you might have a few extra consoles then, but it would still be cheaper and easier for myself to do it that way.
Of course, I mean searching the wild, not Ebay.

Yeah I already checked mine just to be sure but it's a virgin :p I don't have any soldering experience so i might just wait until one pops up somewhere

Man, if you can wait...
Last year, I ended up with 7 PS1's, and I quit buying console-only years ago. In other words, if I ended up with the console, I made bank on the games. And I still had 3 modded ones when I tested em all.
I give this advice frequently, but if you never search the wild, it's worthless advice: Be patient, be content with the hundreds of games you own, and collect it all. Don't sell what you don't already own, unless it's uber-common, and you hate it.
At the end of a few year's, you'll be amazed. PS1's with modchips are small potatoes. You'll be giving them to your neighbors:

I sat on RE1 for the Saturn for 3 months.
I got my Saturn for $8. Played RE for an hour, and then switched to Panzer Dragoon Zwei...
Waiting is worth it for the cheapo like myself ;)

I've got several premodded Playstations sitting about 10ft from me here. Mostly SCPH-5501 models. I've had them advertised in the Buy/Sell/Trade section in my thread if you want to see an actual picture.
Modchips running the "MM3" code are usually the best. Stealth capable and are compatible with every PS1. However the stealth on MM3 code is limited as apparently the SCPH-1001 doesn't work correctly with it and nor does the SCPH-102 IIRC. I've been told the "MM2" code works great with stealth on the SCPH-1001, not sure about the 102 (which is a PAL unit FWIW).
I have modchips available if anyone wants one and I WILL beat any advertised price on the internet. Anyone asking $20 for one is making a tidy profit.
