View Full Version : Scratching that old Saturn itch

I was an avid Saturn gamer from 1999-2005. I've been off my honeymoon with this system for a good 6 years now, but still keep it around because I never know when the itch might hit to replay certain favorites. Honestly, I hadn't really touched my Saturn in maybe 2, 3 years now. However, I recently cleaned up my game room and it's amazing how when you get rid of some clutter, and you can easily access your games, you suddenly want to, lol.
I just spent the better part of an hour playing Street Fighter Zero 3 and Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo. Definitely brought back fond memories and I'll be busting out some other Saturn goodies this weekend. So while I might not be as passionate for this system as I once was some 6 years ago, I'm glad I never sold the whole she-bang off. You never know when the itch might come, and it's certainly come for me in recent days.
Gosh, I haven't played Radiant Silvergun in like... 7 years.
*salivates at all the old gems waiting to be replayed after not having played for YEARS*
I'm sure other retro gamers here can relate -- has there been a system you hadn't touched in years, but didn't sell because you knew one day the itch would strike? It's sweet when the itch strikes and you realize it's all still waiting for you in the closet. SWEET FEELING :)

When I came across my old Atari Jr from my childhood is as close as I've come to your experience. It did get me into collecting old games, but it was mom, not I, who saved it all those years.
And it was damn sweet to play some Yars Revenge and Cosmic Ark after a 20+ year hiatus :D

Most of my systems? Haha. It's kind of hard to play any particular system regularly when you're stretched thin among so many.
Hmmm, what haven't I played in at least a year, let's see... Dreamcast, PS2, Game Gear, Virtual Boy, GameCube, Colecovision, MVS, Master System, Sega CD, Saturn, 3DO, Wonderswan, GP32, and Wii.
Some people are probably going to react like "WHAT?!" to some of those systems, haha.

I haven't touched my PS-2 in close to 4 years myself. Other then in a sexual manner of course.

Oh, I have a ton I've never played in years. I haven't even looked at my PSP in about 5.

Yeah, I stored my Dreamcast away years ago. I'm thinking about busting it out this weekend. It's been so long, its almost like a brand new system to me now. lol.

I fire up the Saturn whenever I need a shmup fix. Played Sonic Wings Special yesterday, and I'd been spending some quality time with Strikers 1945 II before that.
And the Ys games on the Falcom Classics I & II collections may very well be my favorite version of Ys. The graphics are just right- better than the PC Engine version, and more "anime looking" than the Ys Eternal games for Windows and PS2. There's still an argument to be had for the PC Engine version having superior music, though...

I dust off just about every system I own once a year. It's been over a year since I've fired up the good old Amiga though. I don't know when I'll get around to doing that, since it takes up quite a bit of space to setup the RGB monitor and Amiga 500 on a desk.

My Amiga has sat unused in my living room for months.
I really need to get Amiga Explorer set up so I can get some actual software to run on it.

Hell yes. Both of those games rock the 2600 as apace games and the Atari 2600 were meant for each other.
Regarding my Saturn, it has probably been two years since I've pulled it out to play Saturn Bomberman. I might play a bit of Virtua Cop, one and two, next time I dust the ol' girl off.

The "itch" happens to me a lot. Since I have so little space, the only system I NEVER unhook is the Sega Genesis (not out of favoritism but simply because, having both the console and the CD-add on, well, I just feel like its more convenient to keep them both hooked up).
Most recently I felt that itch with, of all things, the PC. It was weird, because I wanted to play the PC, but wanted to play a console game. Fortunately, I had Resident Evil 2 Platinum. So I had my cake and ate it too.
On the topic of the Saturn, I might be about to get one... the same friend who sold me the NGPC wants to ditch his Saturn (AFAIK he only has one game, "D"). So... how good is the Saturn version of Resident Evil 1?

IIRC RE1 was originally made Saturn version first (Citation needed, of course), so it should be close to the original Playstation release. I've also heard some things about very early editions of the Saturn version being uncensored. I don't know any more details there.

It turns out, someone wrote an article comparing the two (http://www.stevemv.com/re.html). There's my question answered I guess.
Even so, I'll be glad to own a Saturn. A local game store has a shelf full of Saturn games. I believe I even saw In the Hunt and Galactic Attack there. And then I can always send the system to get modded for those tasty imports...

IMO, as well as many others.. In the Hunt is slightly inferior to the PlayStation port…
now Galactic Attack... that is an amazing game! BUT to truly get the most out of it, you really have to TATE your television…
from the manual:
"NOTE: SEGA SATURN Mode is played on a domestic (horizontal) screen; so it is slightly different from the commercial version. We apologize for any inconvenience caused."
